A SEMI-DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN ENGLISH VI

I.

OBJECTIVES At the end of the lesson, the pupils are expected to: A. Recognize verbs as words that denote action or being; B. Classify verbs into action words or linking verbs; C. Realize the good and bad effects of TV watching. SUBJECT MATTER A. Topic: Literature: TV: Boon or Bane? Language: Action words and Linking Verbs B. Source: Cruz, Alexes Anne. Enjoying English Workbook 6. Mandaluyong City: Jedigar Enterprises. 2006, pp. 50-54. C. Instructional Materials: manila paper, cartolina, pictures PROCEDURES A. Daily Routine 1. Prayer (After praying the teacher greets the students Good Morning Grade Six!) B. Motivation The teacher shows pictures of different television programs and he instructs the pupils to observe carefully the pictures.

Afterwards, the teacher solicits ideas from the pupils by asking the following questions: 1. What have you observed about these pictures? 2. Do you enjoy watching them in the television? Why? 3. What ideas can you infer from these pictures? C. Lesson Proper The teacher sums up the answers of the pupils to introduce the essay titled TV: Boon or Bane? He gives an overview of the essay. He begins discussing the lesson by unlocking difficult words found in the essay. The pupils learn the meaning of unfamiliar words in the essay by connecting it to its synonyms. Activity 1: Unlocking of Difficult Words Connect Column A to Column B to find its synonyms. Activity 2: First Reading. Reading of the essay by the teacher The teacher instructs the pupils to listen carefully as he reads the essay. The pupils identify the parts that: 1. describe the positive effects of television watching; and 2. reveal the negative effects of television watching. Activity 3- Listening Checkpoint Teacher asks the following questions to check whether the pupils have listened to him. 1. Enumerate the positive effects of television watching. 2. What are the negative effects of television watching? Activity 4: Second Reading. Reading by class. Teacher divides the class into two groups. Each group reads the paragraph assigned to them. Group 1 reads the first paragraph of the essay. Group 2 reads the second paragraph. Group 3 reads the third paragraph.

Activity 5: Comprehension Questions 1. What are the pros and cons of watching TV? 2. How do you choose the TV program you watch? 3. Do you think TV is a boon or a bane? Explain. Activity 6: Grammar Integration The teacher tells the pupils to read the following sentences taken from the essay: Read the following sentences: 1. Adults gain practical knowledge about their health and other personal concerns by watching TV. 2. Children learn from educational TV shows. 3. Some people watch television rather than face their immediate and urgent problems and cares. 4. Millions of Filipino are TV watchers. 5. They are unaware of the positive and negative effects of watching TV. 6. Violence is already part of the culture. Teacher discusses the highlighted words in each sentence. The word gain, learn, watch and face expressed actions, thus these words are called verbs. Moreover, are and is are used as linking verbs. Basically, linking verbs are forms of the verb be-- am, are, is, was, and were. An action verb is a verb that describes an action, like run, jump, kick, eat, break, cry, smile, or think while a linking verb is a verb that links (connects) the subject of the sentence to information about that subject. Linking verbs do not describe action. D. Application Encircle the verb in each sentence. Write AC if it is an action verb or LV if it is a linking verb. _______1.
