Direct Instruction
Main idea Main idea

Having students learn about a concept that involves a skill that requires specific operations to be done
Main idea Main idea

Planning
1. Identify Topics -choose a topic that is a procedural skill, which has specific operations to follow and can be shown in several examples 2. Specify Learning Objectives -determine the concepts related to the skill you would like the students to take away from the lesson. The goal of this model is automaticity and transfer 3. Select Examples and Problems -When selecting examples choose ones that exemplify the concepts you want the students to take away, beginning with simpler straight to the point examples and moving up in difficulty as the students begin to grasp the concept/skills

Implementing
Phase 1: Introduction and Review In this initial phase the teacher will introduce the topic as well as present some examples to see how much the students already know about the concept Phase 2: Presentation -in this phase the teacher is presenting the examples as clearly as possible so not to create misconceptions. Students can be involved in this process to help determine what steps need to be done to complete the operations Phase 3: Guided Practice -in this phase the students now try to solve the examples on their own while the teacher moves around helping students as needed and guiding those that may be struggling Phase 4: Independent Practice -after students have successfully answered the examples with the help of the teacher they can be asked to complete more on their own, this is typically presented through homework.

Assessing
Assessment for this model can be done through homework, or an in-class assessment such as a worksheet, quiz or test. Wording is very important for assessment because using certain words may lead students to complete the wrong operations.

Motivation
Motivation Students are motivated in this model because it involves large amounts of student involvement through the Guided Practice. While modeling the examples the teacher can personalize the examples to fit the students and that will further motivate them because it makes the examples relatable.

So what? What is important to understand about this?

It is important to remember that this model is not all teacher-centered and that it is essential to have students get involved in the initial phases. Also the goal of this model is to set a sound foundation of the concept so that it can become automatized and can transfer to other concepts.
