Affect

As a noun, "affect" may refer to an emotion or to a psychological/psychiatric state . As an adjective, it may refer to an assumed pretense: "Her affected accent really had an effect on me"; "Her affected accent really affected my view of her" late Middle English (in the sense 'attack as a disease'): from French affecter or Latin affect- 'influenced, affected', from the verb afficere . Affect can refer to facial expression or demeanor. A person's affect is the expression of emotion or feelings displayed to others through facial expressions, hand gestures, voice tone and other emotional signs such as laugher or tears. Individual affect fluctuates according to emotional state. What is considered a normal range of affect, called the broad affect , varies from culture to culture, and even within a culture. Certain individuals may gesture prolifically while talking, and display dramatic facial expressions in reaction to social situations or other stimuli. Others may show little outward response to social environments or interactions, expressing a narrow range of emotions to the outside world.

People with psychological disorders may display variations in their affect. A restricted or constricted affect describes a mild restriction in the range or intensity of display of feelings. As the reduction in display of emotion becomes more severe the term blunted affect may be applied. When the outward display of emotion is out of context for the situation, such as laughter while describing pain or sadness, the affect is termed inappropriate. Emotions
The word emotions includes a broad repertoire of perceptions, expressions of feelings and bodily changes. Emotiond derived from Middle French, from emouvoir to stir up, from Old French esmovoir,
from Latin emovre to remove, displace, from e- + movre to move. A psychological state that arises spontaneously rather than through conscious effort and is sometimes accompanied by physiological changes; a feeling. Emotion, in its most general definition, is a neural impulse that moves an organism to action, prompting automatic reactive behavior that has been adapted through evolution as a survival mechanism to meet a survival need.
To clarify the concept of emotions, two definitions of various aspects of emotions can be distinguished: Emotion is a feeling that is private and subjective. Humans can report an extraordinary range of states, which they can feel or experience. Some reports are accompanied by obvious signs of enjoyment or distress, but often these reports have no overt indicators. In many cases, the emotions we note in ourselves seem to be blends of different states. 2 Emotions are actions commonly "deemed", such as

defending or attacking in response to a threat. Some psychologists have tried to subdivide emotions in categories. For example Wilhelm Wundt, the great nineteenth century psychologist, offered the view that emotions consist of three basic dimensions, each one of a pair of opposite states: pleasantness/unpleasantness, tension/release and excitement/relaxation. However, this list has become more complex over time. Plutchik suggests that there are eight basic emotions grouped in four pairs of opposites: 1. 2. 3. 4. joy/sadness acceptance/disgust anger/fear surprise/anticipation

Moods
Moods differ from emotions in that they are less specific, less intense, and less likely to be triggered by a particular stimulus or event. Moods generally have either a positive or negative valence. In other words, people typically speak of being in a good mood or a bad mood. A set of verb forms that indicate the attitude of the speaker toward the likelihood of the action occurring or in some other way. Two types of mood exist in here. Positive mood can be caused by many different aspects of life as well as have certain effects on people as a whole. Good mood is usually considered a state without an identified cause; people cannot pinpoint exactly why they are in a good mood. People seem to experience a positive mood when they have a clean slate, have had a good night sleep, and feel no sense of stress in their life. Negative moods have important implications for human mental and physical wellbeing. Moods are basic psychological states that can occur as a reaction to an event or can surface for no apparent external cause. Since there is no intentional object that causes the negative mood, it has no specific start and stop date. It can last for hours, days, weeks, or longer. Negative moods can manipulate how individuals interpret and translate the world around them, and can also direct their behavior.
