who in life is important, EVERYONE! The great, the good, the famous and the rest of us were all recognised and celebrated in a ceremony that was simply mesmerising and I even found it very emotional to watch when certain nations athletes were announced into the stadium. I was side-stepped for a moment though when I didnt recognise the gentleman who was being physically supported and helped by a nurse to perform at a very symbolic moment in the ceremony, it was Mohammed Ali. Even at a time in his life when he is fighting a fight which he is guaranteed to lose, Ali was still showing the same bravery which he has displayed all of his life but this time he was doing it when he was at his weakest and most vulnerable and in front of a global audience of one billion people, fear is a friend only for exceptional people. He was and still is, quite simply The Greatest! Why was Ali the greatest? Was it his unmatched boxing skills which included speed, power, precision and strength. Was it the showmanship, theatre, intellect and articulated speech which he took everywhere he boxed or was it that he had everything else including the looks, personality and astuteness to take advantage of all of the above through self-promotion and the sending-up of everything and everyone and which took his sport into the stratosphere of popularity and at the same time, made him the most recognised man on the planet. Yes, all of the above made him the greatest of sportsmen but it was his courage that made Mohammed Ali the greatest of men.

Tour De Force
Feasting at the Round Table of The 2012 Olympic Games this fortnight have been the sporting knights Sirs Redgrave, Pinsent and Hoy and if all of the above were feted and honoured for splashing and trundling around in their respective sporting arenas then following Team GB,s London successes, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth ll can look forward to anointing a new generation of sporty icons as Sirs and Siresses. Leading this charge to Her Majestys high alter must surely be todays answer to Lancelot, arise Sir Wiggo, ye of the pedalled horse. But would Bradley Wiggins, the rough northern diamond who shuns the limelight and who prefers the closeness and cossetness of his family and has already stated that he despises, or was it detests, celebrity and everything it stands for, accept a knighthood if it were proffered. I hope he would, hes obviously proud of who(m) he is, who he represents and where he comes from and he is the antithesis of pretention and does not do sycophancy and condescension. One thing Wiggo did say after his Olympic success, and not forgetting his fantastic triumph in the 3,000km Tour De France, was that to participate-in and join him and his fellow cyclists, all that was required was a bike and a road. It should be that simple but its not. Notwithstanding the state of this countrys roads and I would like to see a Tour De France time trial stage taking place on The Dryfe Road from Lockerbie to Eskdalemuir, I can guarantee, that Wiggins, Cavendish and Co wouldnt make it as far Balgray before having to throw their 10,000 state-of-the-art machines over the nearest dyke for scrap and wait for a replacement bike just to get to Sibbaldbie, such is the state of that road, the other major concern for ordinary cyclists is how motorists in general mistreat and disrespect these vulnerable road users. I can tell you that as someone who once biked from Lockerbie to the Isle of White and experienced everything that roads and other road-users can throw at you and that was over 25 years ago when the highways were more conducive to cycling, I wouldnt thank you for the gift of one of Mr.Wiggins, carbon-framed flying-machines. This is for your information, the general motorist, because you are ignorant of the laws regarding vulnerable road users, ie. motorcyclists, horse riders and cyclists. On page 163 of The Highway Code it states on OVERTAKING, Give vulnerable road users at least as much space as you would a car, use your mirrors and signal when it is safe to do so. On the same page as this Highway Code rule is an accompanying photograph of a motorist correctly overtaking a cyclist and the car is on the other side of the road to complete the manoeuvre, simple. Not simple enough for most motorists though because what it is also stating is that if there is any on-coming traffic then you have to draw in behind a cyclist until there is room and time to complete safely the overtaking manoeuvre and then every vehicle following the cyclist has to indicate it is doing so.

In 1967 his country found him guilty of draft evasion for its war against the nationalist Vietcong in Vietnam and he was fined $10,000 and sentenced to 5 years in jail. Ali appealed the decision but it would take almost 4 years to win his appeal and although he remained on bail for this period, he was stripped of his heavyweight title and licence to box. The stance and explosive remarks Mohammed Ali would take and make against The Vietnam War were made before it was protested against nationally and internationally and his words served as a touchstone for the racial and anti-war upheavals that rocked the sixties and inspired Martin Luther King jr.to voice his own opposition to the war. Below are a just few of Ali,s quotes which defined an era ; *I aint got no quarrel with them Vietcong, they never called me a nigger. *No, Im not going 10,000 miles to help murder, kill and burn other people to simply help continue the domination of white slave masters over dark people the world over. This is the day and age when such evil injustice must come to an end. *I figure I,ll be champ for about 10 years and then I,ll let my brother take over,- like the Kennedys down in Washington. It takes a different kind of courage and from an exceptional human being to defy, decry and expose their own hypocritical government. By R. James

Today, very few motorists even bother to indicate to other motorists before overtaking a cyclist let alone pulling-in behind one before it is safe to do so. Lorry drivers are the exception to this. There was a tragic double irony on the day of Bradley Wiggins, Olympic gold medal success because a 28 year-old London cyclist was knocked-off his bike and killed by an official Olympic venue bus and driven by an accredited Olympic bus driver. Bradley Wiggins issued a statement saying that it should be made compulsory for all cyclists to wear protective head gear. Last year in the UK 107 cyclists were killed and 3,085 were seriously injured (this last number could actually be trebled because not all cycle incidents are reported to or recorded as such by the police) and of these statistics almost 25% are children. Although motorists in general are responsible drivers, Im sorry to say that when it comes to respecting vulnerable road users then motorists in general are a disgrace. If you think this is all over-the- top and too sweeping then I suggest that you get on your own bike and test the roads for yourself, good luck, youll need it. Or even more desperate, try knocking a cyclist over a hedge and see whos right and who does a deserved stretch at Her Majestys pleasure. J. Carruthers

She is a very beautiful, intelligent, cultured, stylish, modern, generous and transparent young woman whose love and devotion for her husband has determined a path and destiny for herself unlike any other young woman in the country. She is of course Katherine Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge and wife of Prince William. Together as the future King and Queen Consort they will transform the monarchy and at the same time, provide a beacon for this country that absolutely radiates and dazzles. Our present Monarch, Queen Elizabeth ll, who this year has celebrated her Diamond anniversary and 60 years on the throne , has always had praise for her work ethic, strength of character and of course her longevity but the truth is that she , Prince Phillip and their advisers have given us nothing but Victorian and feudal values and an indifference, stuffiness, pomposity and attitude to many things that are normal and modern. The following anecdote may appear obscure, insignificant or even irrelevant to many people but for me, it offers a small insight into Her Majestys entire reign. The occasion was the opening ceremony of the 2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games and David Becham was running the final stage of the torch procession round the stadium track. Waiting on the track to receive and conclude this symbolic moment was the Head of The Commonwealth countries, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth ll. Mr. Becham was magnificent, his sporting prowess, profile and star were at their global peak and on this wonderful occasion, his pride, demeanor and smile radiated as he reflected a nations collective emotion. On finishing his lap of honour, Becham collected a beautiful little girl and it was she who
Katys a Gift
would present Her Majesty with the torch. The way he held her , whispered to her and led her, you could have been forgiven for thinking this little girl was David Becham,s own daughter, but she wasnt, his was just a natural, paternal, loving, caring and protective instinct and it was just gorgeous to watch. What happened next was surreal. 90,000 spectators and a global audience of 100,s of millions held their collective breath in expectancy as the little blonde subject princess curtsied cutely and enacted her role in front of the Sovereign of two billion people. The Queen took the torch and then,...... nothing, that was it. No repartee with Mr. Becham, not even a smile for the little girl. Had Her Majesty taken stage fright, had someone shouted cut, thats a wrap, can it, had the fireworks failed to ignite or had the Red Arrows flown over Old Trafford by mistake. No, The Queen just did nothing! She didnt speak, respond, touch or blink. In that single moment I couldnt have imagined another granny or woman reacting in such a cold, emotionless or distant way to a small girl. Katherine Middleton would have kissed and stroked her. Princess Diana would have scooped her up in her arms and cradled her. That one moment epitomised Queen Elizabeths entire reign and highlighted the reason for The Windsors dysfunctionality, a sad and cold remoteness and distance from all things ordinary and natural. Kate Middleton is not only to be a lifelong soul mate and devoted wife to Prince William, she is also destined to be a royal gift to the monarchy and more importantly, to this nations people and when she eventually becomes our Queen Consort, Then Williams mothers legacy will have been realised. If it were possible to make it so, Queen Elizabeth ll would abdicate tomorrow with Prince Charles replacing her as The Prince Regent. He doesnt deserve to be king. Both he and his family failed in their moral duty to protect, nurture and support Diana and as a young woman, royal wife and mother she was entitled to expect much more and she deserved better. Even after her demise, The Windsors needed ordinary people to show them how to grieve properly and respectfully. Prince Charles Regency period should be determined by William and Katys desire and readiness to accede to the throne. Queen Katherine, I cant wait. By Lisa Thirtle

Never before have I watched even a small part of an Olympic Opening Ceremony let alone the entire production but thats what happened this time with The XXX Olympiad in London. It was stunning from start to finish with its story telling, percussive music, theatre and above all its inclusiveness. Danny Boyle and his production team certainly understand (cont. on page 6)

Lockerbie
Lockerbie is good place to stay there because are lots of fun things happening. There are lots of good pubs like The Brig Inn, Black Bull, St. Mungo and The Townhead. There are some fun things for kids like Stage Face which is a drama, singing and dancing club and some good parks like Mcjerrow, King Edwards, Rosebank and Lambhill. The Parks could be better if older children would not chuck their rubbish on the ground. Instead they should put it in their pockets. Another thing that could be better about the parks, if you have a dog and you take it for a walk you should not take it near the childrens play park for the toilet and do not pick it up because a parent or child could stand in dog dirt (poo). Lockerbie could be improved if there was a swimming pool or a theme park for the children. All the adults want somewhere the children can go and hang-out with their friends By Cree

Lockerbie
Lockerbie is a small town close to the Scottish and English border. IT is found on the motorway, the M74. This is the main motorway to Glasgow and Carlisle. Unfortunately, Lockerbie became famous worldwide on 21st December 1988 when flight 103 crashed into the town and caused by a bomb. There is a memorial garden where people visit. Lockerbie town centre used to be full of shops but now many of the buildings are empty, although new shops are now starting to open. Despite this Lockerbie has many good things and I wouldnt live anywhere else. LOCKERBIE ICE RINK; It is the oldest indoor ice rink in Scotland. It was built in 1966 and it is famous for curling. Some people who have curled at Lockerbie Ice Rink have become World and European champions. Others have taken part in the Olympics. LOCKERBIE PRIMARY and ACADEMY; These schools have been newly built recently. The PE Hall, dance studio, library, music rooms, computer rooms and playground are amazing. It is a big difference from our old schools. LOCKERBIE WILDLIFE TRUST; This was started in 1986 by Jim Rae, a well known local teacher, to help protect wildlife and teach young people about local wildlife and to understand it. I am sure we are all very grateful for it. The egg hunt every year is very successful. LOCKERBIE JAZZ FESTIVAL; This takes place every October and has been going on for several years. It has grown every year and brings many visitors into Lockerbie. This helps businesses like local hotels. Lockerbie has lots of hotels for such a small town. LOCKERBIE MARKET; Lockerbie is a well known farming area. It was once Scotlands largest lamb market but over 10 years ago the local area was hit with foot and mouth. It was very tragic for many farmers who lost their animals and nearly lost their businesses. My grandad lost his sheep and cows in the foot and mouth. He told me about all the fires that could be seen along the motorway where they burnt animals. The smell was awful. LOCKERBIE ECO POWER; It was built in 2007 and was the UK,s largest wood burning plant. It was built to burn the scrap wood from two of Lockerbies main sawmills, Forest Gardens and James Jones. The power plant is eco because it helps to cut down on greenhouse gas emissions. This is better for the environment. It also helped create jobs in forestry and agriculture. I hope in the next few years that Lockerbie will improve further. There will be fewer empty buildings and we will finally get the swimming pool we should have had years ago. I would also like to have the cinema back and somewhere for us kids to go. By Brittany

As the changing colours of our surrounding landscape prepare everyone for the seasons ahead, they also beckon us to look more closely and delight in the local flora. The exotic timbers of The Bridge, which are greying (well most of them) through their natural, chemical and lighting processes and enhanced by the oxidisation (rust) of the precision structural fixings (nails), surely beg the question, who are the real planks here for accepting this? Network Rail, career politicians or you, the community, (answer) All of the above. By W. Beattie
