Foundation course in Quantity Surveying Course Guide

Course Overview
The Foundation course in Quantity Surveying has been designed to provide you with the core knowledge and understanding of quantity surveying techniques and issues relating to best practice including different forms of contract that appear internationally. In this course, you will be introduced to concepts on various procurement options; the production of tender documents; the contractor's tendering procedure and strategy; and the detailed process undertaken by the contractor to price tender documents. The aim of the course is to familiarise you with the key principles of tendering, estimating and pricing and provide you with knowledge of construction contracts and their financial provisions.

What you will learn?


This course will provide a clear understanding of: the principles of estimating and tendering the basic principles for pricing simple domestic scale construction the process required for the routine operation of a construction contract the main procurement routes available and the advantages and disadvantages of each the tendering procedure followed by contractors which form of contract is most applicable in a given situation the procedure for completing the contract form the differences between the various different types of subcontractor how to value variation works under the JCT 05 standard form of building contract the procedure for ascertaining the amount stated as due in an interim certificate the steps a contractor should take to gain an extension of time the liquidated damages provisions included in the JCT 05 standard form of building contract the main procurement routes available and the advantages and disadvantages of each

Eligibility criteria
The course is applicable for beginners in the industry as well as those practitioners with limited experience in the field. To participate in this course you can be a graduate, graduate equivalent or diploma holder.

Administration process
Duration - 6 month (24 week) course covering 200 hours of study undertaken through E-Learning access to course content and materials that guide you through the facilities management process. Mode of study All of your learning materials are accessible through the Online Academy, RICS Trainings E-Learning platform. Before the start of the course, you will receive an email, which will provide information on how to access the Online Academy along with details of your username and password. Examination/Evaluation - You will be assessed through an online examination hosted by the RICS Online Academy. The online examination will take place at the end of the 6 month course and you will need to acquire the requisite minimum score to successfully complete the course. Candidates who fail to meet the requisite minimum score on their first attempt will have the opportunity to re-sit the online examination. The number of re-sits is restricted to one (1) per candidate. An interview may be required to authenticate your online examination result. Certificate of completion - Upon successful completion of the course, a certificate will be awarded to you by RICS (Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors).
