LMS Evaluations
Site: http://ecommunity.pwsd76.ab.ca/course/view.php?id=947 Course: The Twelve Days of Educational Technology Evaluation by: Group 3 Michelle, Stephanie, Dennis Total Score: Acceptable
Summary: The twelve Days of Educational Technology from the Peace Wapati School Division is a very informative course. It is part of their eCommunity Creating connections through technology. Overall, our group found the course to be acceptable according to the rubric we created. The twelve links would be useful to educators and they contained a wealth of information. As a course, however the group felt it was lacking in several areas. We also left the discussion wondering if more options would be available if we were actually enrolled in the course. Since we were not enrolled we noted several weaknesses with the course. As far as the content, we did not find the course syllabus or an overall outline for the course. We would have preferred to see the course objectives and purpose fully explained. A bit more pizzazz or creativity should have been possible throughout the entire site. The layout of the site was consistent from page to page in terms of navigation and information layout. We were not totally lost in the navigation of the course, but more information, or a back button to make moving back and forth an easier task. We found no opportunities for collaboration on the site. Interaction is such a key component for the success of the students. We feel there was a real missed opportunity here for interaction and greater collaboration. We did find a link for contact information, but no other real assistance could be found if help was needed. Detailed Breakdown of Rubric: Content: Acceptable Strengths The content is divided into manageable units (days) There is a variety of activities for multiple learners and level of knowledge Content is up to date Weaknesses No syllabus or overall outline of goals and purpose

Layout\Design: Acceptable Strengths Well designed, attractive and usable Graphis are related to the content and enhance the students experience Weaknesses The user may become lost. White space not used effectively Collaboration: Unacceptable No collaborative opportunities are available in the course. Instructional Resources: Acceptable Strengths Online links to assignments and resources are included Instructor Contact Information is included Resources included contribute to the course success Weaknesses It is unclear which resources are required and which are additional. No clearly stated goals or objectives Support: Acceptable Strengths Contact information is provided Some communications opportunities are available Weaknesses Technical support is not available or it is not clearly stated in the course. Expectations for support response time are not present or are not clearly defined in the course. Accessablilty: Acceptable Strengths Some additional formats of files and materials are available Weaknesses Hyperlinks are not titled with descriptive text. Graphics do not include alternative text.

Site: http://learn.caitlincahill.com/moodle/course/view.php?id=2 Course: Tech Tools Evaluation by: Group 3 Michelle, Stephanie, Dennis Total Score: Target
Summary: Tech Tools is an online course by Phrontistery and is offered on MoodleShare. This course is well-organized and provides information that addresses the stated goal of the course. It provides resources in various formats (i.e. text, video, audio, etc.) It also provides many additional links for users to access on their own if they want to explore the topics further. The course provides an online discussion board for users. It is important to note that we viewed this course as guests without actually registering or logging into the course. We worked under the assumption that some course functions or resources may have only been available to students who were registered for the course. While this course has many strengths, there were several weaknesses that should be mentioned. We were not able to find an exact syllabus, but the layout of the course itself seemed to act as an interactive syllabus, so we felt that a specific document was not needed. It would have been helpful if they had noted their intention of not including a specific document. We also felt like the course could have included more interaction. The only format for interaction we noticed was a discussion board, but it does not tell when or how students should use it. There was no contact information for the instructor, classmates, or technical support (though this may be available for registered users). Detailed breakdown of rubric: Content: Target Strengths The goal of the course is stated in the introduction. The site contains up-to-date material and resources and all links are active. The content is divided into well-organized manageable units. The course includes a variety of learning formats, including text, video, audio, and graphical information. There were very few typographical or grammatical errors. Weaknesses It is not clear if the syllabus is missing or if the site itself is supposed to be viewed as an interactive syllabus. Layout/Design: Target/Acceptable Strengths Material is organized into manageable units. Units contain an appropriate amount of information without long scrolling or horizontal scrolling.

There is a balanced amount of text, graphics and video. Graphics and video are appropriately related to the content. Links are all working and are related to the content. Weaknesses Because other courses are listed in the left sidebar along with each unit in this course, it is very easy to unintentionally jump to another course.

Collaboration: Acceptable Strengths An easily accessible discussion board is included for users and instructors. Weaknesses There are no instructions for how and when to use the discussion board. There are no group assignments. There is no way for users to contact individual classmates or the instructor. Instructional Resources: Acceptable/Target Strengths Resources related to the course goal. Assignments are clearly stated and it is clear which resources should be used in completion of the assignments. It is clear which resources are included as additional information and not requirements.\ Weaknesses There is no contact information for classmates, instructors, and/or technical support. (We acknowledge that this information could be available for registered users). Support: Acceptable Strengths The discussion board can be used to obtain and provide support. Weaknesses There is no contact information or instructions for obtaining support. There are no email addresses, phone numbers, or links for information on course support or technical support. Accessibility: Strengths The course offers many formats for learning (text, video, audio, graphics, discussion board) Weaknesses No alternative text is used with any graphics.
