Yarn: Any worsted weight acrylic or cotton. About half a skein of red, and then some scraps of yellow, white, pink, green and black. Needles: US 8/5mm Gauge: Not important This strawberry is knit flat and sideways, using shortrows for the shaping. . W&T = wrap and turn: Move yarn to the front of your work, slip 1 stitch from left to right needle, move yarn to back of work, slip stitch back to left needle. Turn work to start next row Picking up wrapped stitches: Slip the wrapped stitch on to your right needle, Carefully pick up the wrap (this shows as an extra loop of yarn around the stitch base), move both stitch and wrap back to left needle and knit the wrapped stitch together with the wrap through the back loop. Kf+b = knit in front and back of same stitch. This is an increase. K2tog = knit 2 stitches together. Graft = kitchener stitch M1 = Make one: Pick up the little horisontal bar between two stitches, twist it and knit it. Provisional cast on: I use the crochet chain version. Simply crochet a loose chain with some scrap yarn. If you need 20 stitches, crochet 22-23 chains, etc. Turn the chain so the wrong side (the one with the bumps) is facing you. Take your working yarn, insert needle (or crochet hook) through the crochet bump, then pull a loop through and leave it on your needle. Repeat for as many stitches as you need. To undo the chain later, just unravel it

carefully, and place the knit stitches on a needle as you go. Make sure to pick up the stitch at the end. This does not look like a stitch, but the yarn from the crochet chain goes through it, so if you take it slow, you'll see it and be able to pick it up with the others. If you don't want to do the grafting, and you don't mind a seam showing, you can just use a regular cast on and bind off, and seam normally instead. This goes for all the pieces. I recommend trying the grafting though, it does look a lot better. Strawberry: Cast on 20 sts using a provisional cast on. Row 1: K19, w&t Row 2: K18, w&t Row 3: K16, w&t Row 4: K15, w&t Row 5: K13, w&t Row 6: K12, w&t Row 7: K10, w&t Row 8: K9, w&t Row 9: K7, w&t Row 10: K6, w&t At this point you'll have 5 wrapped stitches on each side. Row 11: Knit to end of row, while picking up the wraps and knitting each one together with the corresponding stitch. Row 12: Knit to end of row, while picking up the wraps and knitting each one together with the corresponding stitch. Repeat these 12 rows 7 more times, for a total of 8 wedges that make up the strawberry shape. Graft the first and last rows together. Don't weave in the ends yet. Put aside for now. Rosy cheeks: With pink yarn, cast on 8 sts using the Emily Ocker circular start (you can find a very good tutorial for this if you google Emily Ocker start). If you have ever crocheted amigurumi, you know how to do this. It's usually described as a magic circle, the difference here is that you keep all the loops on the needle/hook instead of pulling them through the previous loop like when you crochet, so when you're done, you have 8 loops instead of 1. When you've cast on 8 sts, go right ahead and bind them off. Cut yarn, pull through last stitch. Seam last stitch to first stitch, then pull the center tight and tie your cast on + bind off ends together. Cut off one of the ends. If you want a smaller version of the cheeks, cast on 8 sts, but when the time comes to bind them off, just slip the stitch to your right needle instead of knitting it, and then slip one stitch over the other, as if you were binding off normally. Basically it's like binding off, but without knitting the stitches first.

Make two of these, keep them aside for now. Husk: Cast on 3 sts with a provisional cast on. Row 1: K3 Row 2: K1, m1, k2 Row 3: K4 Row 4: K1, m1, k3 Row 5: K5 Row 6: K1, m1, k4 Row 7: K6 Row 8: K1, m1, k5 Row 9: K7 Row 10: K1, m1, k6 Row 11: K8 Row 12: Bind off 5, knit 3 Repeat 3 more times for 4 points total. Cut yarn, leaving a tail for seaming. Graft first and last row together. Weave bind off tail through the purl bumps on the upper edge, pull tight to gather.

Knit a 4-5 long 3-stitch icord. Fold it double, and sew it to the top of the husk, this is the hanging loop. Make sure to anchor it well. Flower: Cast on 2 sts, leaving a tail for seaming. Row 1: K1, kf+b Row 2: K3 Row 3: K2, kf+b Row 4: K4 Row 5: K3, kf+ b Row 6: K5 Row 7: K3, k2tog Row 8: K4 Row 9: K2, k2tog Row 10: K3 Row 11: K1, k2tog

Row 12: K2 Repeat these 12 rows 4 more times, for a total of 5 petals. Cut yarn, leaving a tail for seaming. Using your cast on tail, seam first and last rows together. Weave in end. Then use your cast off tail to weave through the purl bumps on one side of the tube. Pull tight, fasten end well. Don't cut it. There will be a small hole left, don't worry about that. It will be covered up by the yellow center. Yellow part of flower: Made exactly like the large version of the rosy cheeks. Sew it over the hole in the flower. Leave the yarn tail loose for now. Assembling the strawberry: Embroider on eyes, then the mouth. Sew on the rosy cheeks using the tails you left for seaming. Seam up the top opening (the widest one), flat so your strawberry's face is in the center front. Weave the yarn tail left over from grafting through the purl bumps at the bottom of the strawberry. Pull tight to gather. Fasten well, weave in. Sew the husk with hanging loop to the top of the strawberry, with one point centered in the front. I simply tack it down in a few places instead of seaming it all the way, using small stitches parallell with the purl bumps so they don't show. Make sure it stays on though, having stitches both through the top and at the very least one through each leafy bit. It looks better like this because the leaves appear more like on an actual strawberry, and not as if they've been glued on :) Then grab the flower with the two yarn tails, make sure the tails are on opposite sides of the center. Find a placement you like, then pull each yarn tail through the husk, and knot the two ends on the back side, between the husk and the strawberry. Since the husk is only fastened with a few stitches here and there, that should not be a problem. Hint: You can make this as a stuffed toy too. Just gather the top opening the same way as the bottom, instead of seaming it flat. Not recommended for young children, because of all the small parts.
