INTRODUCCIN
INTRODUCTION
In 1879 Lady Florence Dixie, in the company of other English aristocrats, decided to take a leisure trip to the Patagonia. Her expedition marked a key moment in our history, for they are considered the first tourists to set foot on Patagonian lands. What on earth makes you choose such an outlandish part of the world to go to? What can be the attraction? (...) These, and similar questions and exclamations I heard from the lips of my friends and acquaintances, when I told them of my intended trip to Patagonia, the land of the Giants. (...) What was the attraction in going to an outlandish place so many miles away? The answer to the question was contained in its own words. Precisely because it was an outlandish place and so far away, I chose it. Palled for the moment with civilisation and its surroundings, I wanted to escape somewhere where I could be as far removed from them as possible. (...) There I would be able to penetrate into vast wilds, virgin as yet to the foot of man. Scenes of infinite beauty and grandeur might be lying hidden in the silent solitude of the mountains that bound the barren plains of the Pampas, into whose mysterious recesses no one as yet had ever ventured. Today, over 130 years after receiving its first visitors, Patagonia has consolidated itself as one of the best travel destinations in the world, frequently admired in the international media. And, despite the passing of time, the descriptions contained in each publication or news piece still hold a strong resemblance to the words of Florence Dixie: exotic, far away, untouched, of infinite beauty, vast, wild, indomitable. Patagonia is one of the few places on the planet still unaltered by man, a land where we can still feel like in awe of these untouched landscapes. With a surface area of 132,033.5 km, the Magellan Region in the Chilean Patagonia holds an infinity of unknown places, far away from large human settlements and industrial areas - a completely unpolluted environment. With a population of barely 1.1 inhabitants per km2, in the wide-open spaces of the Magellan Region you can look around in 360 and find yourself alone in the midst of overwhelming nature. How many places in the world can boast something like that? Patagonia has known how to match these characteristics with quality services and infrastructure, offering attractive tours for every kind of traveller: from those who prefer a more conventional tour, to other travellers who seek to make an exciting adventure out of their trip. In these pages, we invite you to find out more about what our Patagonia has to offer and what makes it a travel destination that cant be missed.
Iconic names in history like Ferdinand Magellan, Juan Ladrilleros, Francis Drake, Robert Fitz Roy and Charles Darwin explored these faraway lands, giving rise to legends, stories and names such as Tierra del Fuego, Patagonia, Terra Australis and Terra Incognita that continue to delight people from all over the world. In Magellanes, many virgin landscapes still exist, offering you the feeling of being an authentic explorer in the 21st century.
Cultura patagona.
Patagonia is also home to a fascinating farming culture. Gauchos, estancias (ranches), mate (a sort of tea), lamb on the spit, sheep shearing, horse taming and traditional festivals with horseriding and typical Chilean horseraces.
Patagonian Culture.
Fauna cercana.

The result is in an incredible wealth and variety of fauna, home to more than 200 bird species and 30 types of mammals (including pumas, foxes, guanacos and huemules). The opportunity to photograph animals at close range is one of Patagonias most valued traits. In places like Torres del Paine National Park, animals feel unthreatened by Man and do not run away, allowing visitors to take pictures at a distance of barely a few metres.
Impressive Flora. Just as the amount of rainfall changes drastically from one place to another, so does the type of vegetation, varying from lush forests to vast stretches of coironal grass steppes. In the forest areas we find native trees such as the coige, Chilean oak, irre, lenga, canelo and the Chilean cypress. But we also come across steppes, peat bogs and true miniature forests filled with an abundance of lichens and moss.
The Region of Magallanes and the Chilean Antarctic occupies the southern tip of Chilean continental territory as well as a part of the Antarctic continent. It is Chiles largest region, even if we consider only the American portion. The region has a surface of 132,033.5 km, and 1,382,033 km including the Antarctic territory.
Its mountains. The combination of enormous snow-capped mountains, tempestuous lakes, forests and stunning glaciers represents one of the most beautiful landscapes of the Patagonia. The Andes Range takes three names in this area: Patagonian Andes in the continental portion, the Darwin Range in Tierra del Fuego and Antantardes in Antarctica. The Ice fields. Part of the Andean geography is occupied by several ice fields of incomparable beauty, such as the Southern Ice Field and the one at Isla Grande Tierra del Fuego, offering visitors the chance to observe a variety of glaciers. The overwhelming millenary presence of these ice fields, their colours that range from transparent ice to white, and the deafening sound of even a small part of an iceberg breaking off, are some of the motivations for an up-close visit to one of these ice giants. Fjords and Channels: a navigators paradise. To the west of the Andean Range, a labyrinth of archipelagos, islands, fjords and canals is formed. Our planet has but eight different fjord systems: British Columbia (United States-Canada), Scotland, Alaska, Norway, Finland, New Zealand, Greenland and the Chilean Patagonia. True submarine mountain ranges created by the retreat of the ice at the end of the glacial age, offer an exceptionally beautiful landscape to navigate through. The four seasons.
The changing nature of the landscapes in Patagonia is not only expressed in the effect of light, winds and the changeable weather. Despite the southern latitude, here the seasons of the year are clearly defined, boasting different colours and shades that vary according to the season, ensuring spectacular l a n d s ca p e s for visitors to admire at every time of the year. In winter, white is predominant in and despite the cold and the several areas fewer hours of daylight the climate becomes more stable as the wind dies down, offering the advantage of a calmer environment for tourists, with hotels working regularly year-round.
Fiordos y canales:

grounds. Southern Right Whales can be sighted at Dungeness Point, and sea kayaking in the Strait of Magellan is also possible, along with winter sports such as ice-skating on the frozen lakes of the city, trekking with snow rackets, and skiing at the ski centre located just 15 minutes away from the city of Punta Arenas. Furthermore, in the last two weeks of July, Punta Arenas holds a Winter Festival, organising cultural events, art exhibitions, handicraft markets, literary meetings and sports events. The region of Magallanes is located between the South latitudes of 48 39 and 90 00 (the South Pole). As we all know, owing to the curve of the Earth, at a greater latitude the sun rays reach the earth at a lower angle and are of a weaker intensity. In Patagonia, this allows for a very special kind of light, full of contrasts, colours and shapes. Visitors can also enjoy breathtaking sunrises and sunsets, with peculiarly shaped clouds tinged in oranges and reds, a creation of the southern winds.
The light.
Unpredictable weather.
The weather is so changeable that several times in the same day, visitors can experience rain, sun, hail, cold, heat or gusts of wind reaching 110 km/h. The good news is that these incessant changes provide plenty of adventures and unique scenes.
Land of Giants. It was in the year 1520 when the white man had his
first encounter with the indigenous people of the southernmost lands of our continent. Ferdinand Magellan sighted some well-built Indians he described as giants, calling them Patagons, which is the origin of the name Patagonia and the legend of the land of giants. The Indians that Magellan had seen were Aonikenks and one of the characteristics of these people was that they were very well built, with an average height of 1.80 metres. The name Patagon derives from the character Pathagon in the cavalry book which Magellan was fond of.

Un getopo is a place that shows traits of the geological formation of the Earth, helping us to understand these processes; it can be a rocky formation, a river or a landscape formed by a glacier. All this geological history dating back millions of years, is visible in several parts of Magallanes, bearing witness to the evolution of this area, from a deep marine environment to a continental one, the effect of the glaciations, the formation of mountains, etc. A few places of interests are Torres del Paine National Park, Pali Aike National Park and the Mylodon Cave.
It is in this region where the first consistent evidence was found of an association between the hunter-gatherers and megafauna, large animals that were extinguished about 10,000 years ago, such as the Mylodon and the American horse. Ichthyosaurs have also been found, which were marine reptiles that co-existed with dinosaurs over 200 million years ago.
Prehistoric Animals.
The list of characteristics goes on... however, we wish to invite you to discover for yourself the wonders of these lands at the end of the world.

Most of the vehicles coming from other regions of our country that enter the region by land, use Route N255, Monte Aymond-Punta Arenas, after driving about 2,000 km through Argentinian territory. There are regular land transport companies that use the aforementioned route, for a trip that lasts approximately 36 hours, crossing Argentinian territory
Air:
Magallanes, and in particular Punta Arenas, is connected with the rest of Chile with daily flights, available at different timetables.
Sea:
Access by sea to the Region is through the Magellan Strait, arriving at the Port of Punta Arenas. From Puerto Natales there is transport towards Puerto Montt, with a ferry that sets off once a week. Transatlantic cruises stop at Puerto Williams, as well as Punta Arenas, before continuing their trip to Antarctica.
PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY
Relief
The Andes Mountain Range, known in this region as the Patagonian Andes, determines the relief of this geography. It extends towards the south until the 52nd parallel South, where it is interrupted by the Smith Channel. This mountain chain reappears as the Brunswick Peninsula, and continues again at Tierra del Fuego where it takes the name of the Darwin Range. Some of the most prominent peaks in the Patagonian Andes are: Volcn Lautaro (3.380 above sea level), Muralln (3.600 m.a.s.l.) the tallest in the regin, Cerro Ladrillero (1.665 m.a.s.l.), Monte Sarmiento (2.234 m.a.s.l.) and Monte Darwin (2.328 m.a.s.l.). In addition to these pinnacles, the well-known Paine Massif is a landmark in the area, with towering rocky heights of up to 3,050 m.a.s.l. Part of the Andean relief is occupied by various ice fields. The most spectacular of these are the Southern Ice Fields, which extend for over 300 km to the south of the Baker Fjord, a stunning display of alternating fjords, lakes and mountains.

To the east of the Patagonian Andes, an expansive area of archipelagos comes into view. An impressive array of islands of varying sizes, islets and craggy rock formations form a geographical labyrinth which is considered one of the greatest and most beautiful on Earth. Among the main islands, from north to south we find: Wellington, Madre de Dios, the Queen Adelaide Archipelago and Tierra del Fuego. In addition to this, a large number of channels extend in different directions. The most important ones are those following a north-south direction, which generally run parallel to the Patagonian Andean Range. In the south-east of the Great Island of Tierra del Fuego we find another important ice field , with glaciers that point in different directions from the Darwin Range towards the great fjords such as the Agostini, Brookes, Marinelli, forming a landscape of unrivalled beauty. Another type of relief we find here in Magallanes, are the steppes or Patagonian pampas. Vast expanses of grass-covered plains which motivated the immigration of important pioneers in past times, giving rise to the great livestock ranches that are typical of this Region. Last, but not least, is the Chilean Antarctic territory. The chain of raised land / mountainous chain (cordon de relieve) that runs along the Antarctic peninsula is a prolongation of the Andes Mountain Range, which after culminating its path at Tierra del Fuego, extends through the Southern Antilles Arc, reappearing in Antarctica.
Hydrography
The hydrography of this region has a particularity that sets it apart from the rivers in other parts of the country: the presence of ice fields and glaciers has impeded the formation of great rivers, which explains the absence of important water courses. According to where the rivermouth is located, these can be classified into two groups: rivers that flow into interior waters within our country and those that run into the Atlantic (Argentina). In the first group we have the Serrano, Hollemberg, Prez, Pinto and La Caleta rivers. Also of considerable importance are the San Juan and Chabunco rivers, whose waters flow from the Brunswick Peninsula into the Strait of Magellan. Those rivers that run into the Atlantic Ocean cross Argentinian lands, and are long and slow. Such is the case of Ro Grande in Tierra del Fuego and the Penitente river in the province of Magallanes.

vientos.
most characteristic of these are: the cold temperate climate, the tundra climate, the ice climate and the transition climate, typical of Punta Arenas and its surrounding areas. In the eastern slopes of the Patagonian Andes there is a cold steppe climate that prevails in the central continental area. It is here that most human settlements have occurred, including Punta Arenas, which has an average yearly rainfall of 425 mm, concentrated mainly in the spring-summer season and during winter in the form of snow. This is an area of incessant winds, which grow stronger during the spring and summer seasons, when they reach speeds of 30 to 40 km/h, occasionally building up to 150 km/h, although they die down almost completely in winter. The average annual temperature in the city of Punta Arenas is of 6.5C and at any month of the year can rise above 10C. In summer there are some exceptionally warm days of 25 30C. The touristic area of Torres del Paine National Park is blessed with a benign climate, and in the sector of Laguna Azul we come upon a microclimate with temperatures that rise considerably in the summer months (25 30C). The Andean heights are dominated by an ice climate, while on the Pacific coastline and channels we find a cold temperate climate of high humidity.

FLORA Y FAUNA
FLORA AND FAUNA
FLORA

FLORA
The flora in Magallanes is determined by the gradient of the rainfall. Hence, the vegetation in the northern sector of the regions channels - where the annual rainfall reaches 3,000 mm - is more diverse than in the areas that lie south of the channels. As we move further away from the mountains towards the east, the rainfall decreases, reaching its minimum in the easternmost part of the Strait of Magallanes, where it rains barely 200-300 mm per year on average. According to this, the following environments can be distinguished:

The fuschia or chilco is a bush with bright red and purplish-blue flowers that grows in the rainier areas. Often in the proximities of the mountains, the forest begins to dominate the landscape. The paramela, with its intense aroma, is another plant which is found in the Andean foothills and the siete camisas (seven shirts) delights with its pink flowers in late spring.
MAGELLANIC WILDLIFE
The diverse environments that make up the Magellanic landscapes vary from the rainy fjords that face the imposing Pacific Ocean in the west, to the more sheltered areas further away from the Andes in the interior channels of less rainfall, to the steppes which reach their most arid conditions in the easternmost part of the Strait of Magallanes. To this we add the closeness of the subantarctic islands and the influence of the powerful antarctic waters, which give rise to a very diverse wildlife. Hence, the islands in the Patagonian channels serve a double purpose, as islands free of predators that harbour great breeding areas, and also as a barrier that separates our region from the wildlife which is typical of the Chilean coast, resulting in some species with slightly endemic traits. Parallely to this, the influence of the pampa landscape which connects with the rest of Argentina, contributes species with migration processes that occur throughout the Atlantic coast and tend to either end or begin in the Magellanic steppes.
FAUNA MAGALLANICA

Thus, the environments and their wildlife can be grouped in the following manner:
STEPPES
The Magellanic steppes form an apparently inhospitable, deserted landscape. However, this environment contains a rich variety of birds that use the area as their main breeding grounds and wintering site. One of the most characteristic species is the andu, with its striking figure. Charadriiformes is the order that groups the seabirds, among which we find plovers and shorebirds. Plovers breed in the vegetation and salty lakes of the steppes, while many shorebird species begin their reproductive cycle in the Arctic tundras of North America, flying thousands of kilometres to spend the boreal winter in the Patagonian wetlands. A noteworthy wetland is the Lomas Bay located to the north of Tierra del Fuego, one of the most important wintering sites for the various members of this group, such as the Arctic shorebird, the straight-billed curlew, the collared plover, the Magallanic plover and the Magellanic oystercatcher, to mention a few. In the lowlands and wetlands of the steppes, we can also observe a large variety of waterbirds. The Caiqun (a sort of goose typical of South America) is found in abundance and is distinctive due to the marked difference between the feathers of male and female specimens. A close relative of the Caiqun is the Red Canqun, which has suffered a dramatic fall in population over the past 50 years and is currently in serious danger of extinction in this area. During the winter, a great part of these South American goose populations migrate towards the north, arriving in the province of Buenos Aires. Associated to the presence of birds and rodents on the steppes, there are also predators, one of the most common of which is the grey fox (introduced into Tierra del Fuego in the 1950s). It is also possible to observe the chingue and the peludo (a slightly more robust-looking armadillo than the Piche). In the waters that surround the steppes, the unmistakeable white dolphin is the most frequently sighted dolphin, and can often be seen following ships such as the ferries that cross the First Narrow of the Strait of Magellan.
ESTEPA
FORESTS
The forests of the Magellanic region are the extreme part of a system that originates in central Chile, and much of the wildlife that inhabits this vegetation is quite similar throughout this whole extension. The Magellanic forest located in the southern part of the Region are generally limited to three species of Nothofagus and

in the wetter zones there are mainly canelos and cypresses. As we move further north the diversity of trees and vegetation increases, as does the associated fauna. Although there is a relatively small diversity of birdlife, the southern forests are the favourite habitat of species such as the cachaa, a parrot that lives in bands of 20 or 30 members. Also in the larger mature forests it is possible to see the delightful black woodpecker, the peuquito and the concn. The thorn-tailed rayaditos are especially abundant in the forests and are often alarmed by any small movement amongst the foliage, crying out incessantly to warn the other birds of the presence of a stranger. Although it also inhabits the steppes, the Andean fox finds in the forests its favourite habitat and is commonly seen in the proximities of human settlements in search of food. It is a large fox with a silhouette that resembles a small German shepherd.
FJORDS
The fjords create a unique environment. Thousands of islands and channels are home to entire populations of bird species who live and breed here. Two types of channel systems can be distinguished: the interior channels and those that cross groups of islands exposed to the Pacific Ocean. Hence, on the exposed coastlines of certain islands there are important bird colonies such as yellow-eyed penguins and macaroni penguins, along with black-browed albatrosses and petrels. the Chungungo sea otter can also be seen throughout the exposed islands, feeding on fish and crabs which it hunts underwater. Meanwhile, the interior channels are of great relevance for birds like the flightless quetru duck and the caranca, a goose similar to the caiquenes, but of strictly marine habits. A small cetacean that is found in the Patagonian channels, and which is endemic to our country, is the Chilean dolphin. Little is yet known about the habits of this beautiful marine mammal.
FIORDOS
MOUNTAIN RANGES
Perhaps the best know Andean environment in the Magallanes Region and the only one which can be reached by public roads is the Torres del Paine Massif. In these kinds of environments guanancos are plentiful, particularly in the protected areas and their surroundings. These ancestors of camels gather in large herds to feed and nurse their newly-born calves.
34
Closely linked to the cycles of the guanaco is the puma, a large feline that finds in these mountains the ideal habitat to hunt its prey and breed in the caves of these rocky formations. In the mountains there are also plenty of condors, carrioneating birds that feed on the carcasses of prey hunted by pumas. In Torres del Paine large groups of condors are frequently seen hovering the area in search of food. With them it also possible to observe the eagle, a bird of prey that feeds mainly on hares, which it hunts with its powerful claws, although it can also be seen feeding off the dead animals or roads. Other bird species present in the Andean Region are the spectacled duck, and above the forest line (in the high peaks), the Andean partridge has its breeding habitat. Torres del Paine National Park is also the habitat of a growing population of huemuls, which are a member of the deer family endemic to this area, currently found in reduced numbers as a consequence of foreign intervention to its original habitat. Huemuls in Torres del Paine and in certain areas of the Patagonian channels are of a docile nature and rarely flee from the presence of humans.

STRAIT OF MAGELLAN
In the Strait of Magellan the wildlife is composed of different groups of birds and mammals. Some, such as the Magellanic penguins nest in colonies such as the ones located on the Magdalena and Contramaestre islands. The cliffs of the strait are used as nesting places by ibises and cormorans, while the peregrine falcon uses these same spots as viewpoints from which to look out for potential prey. The strait is regularly patrolled by the black-browed albatross, while the larger-sized varieties of the species such as the wandering albatross and the royal albatross only visity this environment sporadically, prefering the open waters of the surrounding oceans. Along with the penguins and cormorans, the South American Sea Lion also choose the islands of the strait to establish their colonies.
Peales dolphin is the most commonly found cetacean in these waters and is often seen leaping out of the water and doing pirouettes, as it follows the boats that navigate close to the coastlines of the trait. Southern right whales also visit the Strait of Magellan in its extreme eastern side, where they were possibly in abundant numbers before the intense persecution which they were victims of in the past. In the western area of the strait we find Francisco Coloane Marine Park, where a group of humpback whales feeds between the months of December to May. With them, one can often observe groups of South American fur seals, a species that was dramatically reduced in number during the colonisation period due to intensive hunting.

Due to the geography, climate and isolation of Magallanes, most of the territory has either barely or never been touched by man, and is therefore a huge system with unique tourist attractions. This is a region of natural heritage, virtually untouched, scarcely populated, boasting renowned sea species and pristine landscapes. Furthermore, it holds the highest density of glaciers, coastline and fjords in the world, all of which makes this region the ultimate destination for special interests tourism. Tourism is therefore is a strategic focus for the development of this region.
REGIONAL ECONOMY
Despite its small population, the Region has quite a dynamic economy, with a wide variety of industries including tourism, along with a consolidation of the more traditional activities, such as cattle farming. Although the manufacturing industry is the most important sector in Magallanes, cattle farming is still a leading activity. There are more than 3 million heads of sheep, which represent more than 50% of the national total. Fossil fuel extraction and mining are also major economic resources in the Region and involve the largest companies, which produce energy in the form of hydrocarbons and coal. Consequently, the Region holds a great energy potential, with oil, gas and coal being the most important resources. As for the fishing sector, the Region is a large exporter of seafood, fish (hake, conger eel) and crustaceans that stand out for their culinary significance, as is the case of the spider crab and the snow crab, of which Magallanes is the main national exporter. Regional tourism is the activity that has had the strongest development in recent years, and important investments have been made in infrastructure, especially in Punta Arenas and Puerto Natales. The Region has also enjoyed a coordinated, positive evolution in terms of commerce, restaurants and hotels, transport and communications, and more personalized services, all of which is a direct indicator of the growth in the tourism sector. On a global perspective, tourism has been one of the fastest-developing industries, with demand growing at a pace of approximately 8%. Within tourism, the special interests segment (nature and adventure or science and cultural tourism, among others) shows an annual growth of approximately 15%.

HISTORICAL OVERVIEW
Cazadores Terrestres

These indigenous people were well-known for their sturdy height, and lived on the steppes in an area stretching south of the river Santa Cruz in Argentina, to the Strait of Magellan. Almost everything we know about the natives comes from the impressions written by the different explorers that travelled through the area. It is important to consider that, in those years, there were very few natives and their habits were already largely influenced by white men. Many authors mention that these people had a great cultural permeability, which may have caused the loss of their own culture in less than a century. The Anikenk wore guanaco furs painted with designs that they also used in their cave paintings. They lived in tents made of wooden sticks covered with guanaco furs. The family had a very important role. In fact, all records indicate that this society was made up of free people, where the only permanently organized body was the family. One of the big changes the European people introduced to America was the horse, an animal that dramatically changed the way of life of all natives and, which was strongly the case with the Tehuelches. These animals probably arrived in the Anikenk territory in the 17th century, and the natives soon adopted them as part of their lifestyle. By the end of the 18th century, the use of the horse had changed the hunting style of these people, replacing the bow and arrow with the boleadoras (a rope with three balls), at which they became experts. But the most significant change was the possibility of an easy form of transportation,

which enabled interaction with other cultures. This way, they started to include new ways of cooking and dressing (for example, the use of a loom) and started to use other raw materials to build their tools. The horse deeply altered the lives of these natives, who became absolutely dependent on it. However, the greatest change in their culture came due to foreign penetration into their land. The contact with the white man had different consequences, most of which were unfavourable, upsetting their ancient habits, moral qualities and even their physical strength. Diseases appeared and alcoholism became one of their most serious problems. In addition to this, during the process of colonisation and creation of farms, the new settlers and the Tehuelches found themselves using the same territories and, little by little, the natives were forced to move away towards the Argentine territory. The Pali Aike area was the last place in the Chilean Patagonia where these natives were seen. Today there is nothing left but traces of their past. The Slknam lived in the northern steppes and the southern forests of Tierra del Fuego. Their way of life was similar to that of the Tehuelches, although they never adopted the horse. They hunted guanacos, wild birds and rodents, and lived in circular tents made of logs covered with furs and sticks. They were tall and well-built, and rather more aggressive than other natives. Until 1881 there had been little contact with these natives. However the establishment of the Chilean-Argentine boundaries that year gave rise to the colonisation of the island. Cattle farmers soon arrived, building large ranches. It was with the development of these sheep farms that the real problems started for the Selknam. We should consider that in their culture they had no awareness or understanding of the concept of private property and, therefore, sheep hunting was a natural activity for them. Their hunting ability was almost immediately noticed by the European settlers. In order to stop the theft of cattle, sheep farmers started to fence the land and put up sheep stockyards with permanent surveillance. Even so, robberies did not stop, giving rise to a sort of genocide of this people that led to their total extermination. They were either forced away from their land or killed by the settlers that started sheep farms and other activities in the region. Hence, the Selknam people were either killed or deported.

Missionaries did everything they could to save the indigenous races of Tierra del Fuego, however they could do nothing more than delay their final extinction. Under the protection of the Salesian missionaries, they could not bear living in enclosed spaces, nor could they avoid catching European diseases.
Sea hunters
This group included the Kawskar and the Ymanas. The Kawskar lived in the northern area of the Strait of Magellan, while the Ymanas lived in southern Tierra del Fuego. The Kawskar lived scattered in small groups and used canoes to sail the channels of the archipelagoes located between the Golfo de Penas and the Breeknock Peninsula, a very rainy region with exuberant vegetation. They hunted sea lions, otters, and birds, as well as fishing

and harvesting seafood; also, when a whale was stranded due to a low tide, they would make the most of its meat and skin. They built their canoes tying three pieces of tree bark together with vegetable fibre, caulked with a mixture of soil, clay and roots, and they put up their tents with wooden sticks covered with sea lion furs. They wore short capes made of seal or otter fur and smeared their bodies with a mixture of soil and animal fat. At the turn of the 20th century, they came into contact with other sea lion hunters, helping them to work the skins and receiving, in return, different foods. They also exchanged fur capes for clothes and other objects. They were extinguished mainly as a result of diseases, - especially the venereal ones - the alcohol introduced by workers and the migrations that scattered them away. The Ymanas were the southernmost ethnic group in the world. Sea hunters and harvesters, they spent most of their lives in their anan (a canoe made of tree bark) or in small, makeshift tents made of wooden stick structures covered with furs and placed by the seashore. They hardly ever wore clothes, enduring low temperatures thanks to the sea lion fat they smeared over their bodies, and a naturally developed ability to withstand the cold. It has been said that they actively hunted cetaceans, but this is a debatable matter owing to the actual skills needed to chase dolphins, considering their speed and mobility, as well as the risks implied in following a whale in groups of canoes. However, there are various references confirming that said practices were possible and that they actually did carry them out, at least occasionally. Epidemics dramatically reduced the numbers of Ymana people and the last survivors of this ethnic group took refuge on Navarino Island, on a piece of land given to them by the Chilean government. Today there are barely a few Ymanas left, who have virtually lost their culture, and very few of them actually speak their own language.
Cazadores martimos

His expedition was continued by John Sebastian Elcano, who completed the voyage around the world, arriving in Spain in 1522. Due to its strategic location, over the years the Magellan Strait became a central concern for the most powerful monarchs of Christianity, as well as for pilots and sailors, cartographers, cosmographers and astronomers, and wealthy merchants. The discovery of this geographical accident meant the introduction of Patagonia, Tierra del Fuego and Southern Chile into world maps and history books.

From the end of the 16th century to the second half of the 18th century, many important voyages were made into Magellanic waters, such as those led by Cordes, Van Noort, Spilbergen and Schouten of Holland; John Byron and James Cook of England; Louis Antoine de Bougainville of France; Antonio Crdoba Laso de la Vega and Alejandro Malaspina of Spain. In general, most of these were scientific expeditions.
SEAL AND WHALE HUNTING BOATS REOPEN MARITIME TRAFFIC THROUGH THE STRAIT
Tierra del Fuego gains fame due to hunting expeditions searching its seas for whales and scouring its coastlines for fur seals. They start to explore the labyrinth of islands around Tierra del Fuego and Western Patagonia, gaining experience and expertise in the secrets of navigating these twisting waters. When English hydrologists begin their memorable campaigns starting in 1827, the sailors of these hunting expeditions naturally become their best informers. The valuable hydrologic and scientific surveys carried out by British officials like Parker King and Fitz Roy, among others, study the practical aspects of sailing through the Strait of Magellan.

instruct in the ways of the English so they could serve as examples to their people when they returned to Tierra del Fuego. The second voyage of the Beagle, now under the command of Captain Fitz Roy, left England in 1832. According to Fitz Roy himself, no ship had ever left England so well equipped. One of the members of the crew on this trip was young Charles Darwin, later to become the most famous naturalist of his era. Three of the four indians from Tierra del Fuego were also on board. The expedition reached the seas around Tierra del Fuego in December 1832. They passed Cabo San Diego (San Diego Cape) on the southeast of Tierra del Fuego, and entered the Strait of Le Maire, anchoring in Good Result Bay, where they were greeted by crowds of screaming indians running along the coastline of Tierra del Fuego. The ship sailed the entire southern part of Tierra del Fuego and entered the Strait of Magellan. Beagle was the name given by Fitz Roy on that occasion to the sea channel that separates the large island of Tierra del Fuego and the smaller islands that stretch toward Cape Horn. The Beagle was the first ship to navigate this channel from East to West. It then travelled through the Patagonian sea channels and the channels of Chiloe, continuing further north until it reached the Galapagos Islands. From there the ship sailed the Polynesian seas near Tahiti, ultimately reaching New Zealand and Australia. Darwin published several interesting books about his travels aboard the Beagle. His observations not only show an interest for the indigenous peoples of the region, but also reveal a fascination for the flora and fauna of these southern lands. It was also during this voyage that he elaborated his theory of the evolution of the species, which would revolutionise the world of science.

CHILEAN OCCUPATION
CHILEAN OCCUPATION
After independence from Spain, the countrys territory stretched from the Atacama Desert in the North to Chilo in the south, and from the Andes Range in the east to the Pacific Ocean to the west. These lands were referred to as Chile Viejo, while the rest of the territory was called Chile Nuevo (New Chile). This consisted of the vast Patagonian territories and Tierra del Fuego. The only inhabitants were the nomadic villages of indigenous hunters and seafarers. Although the very first article of the Constitution of the new Republic of Chile, written in 1833, proclaims Cape Horn as the southern border of the country, the Patagonian lands and Tierra del Fuego were almost entirely unknown to the government and the people of Chile. At the time Europeans - especially the English and the French - did not recognise these lands as Chilean, but instead considered them a sort of nomans land. They therefore saw the Strait of Magellan as an important passageway, through which they were able to reach their colonies in Polynesia, maintain trade with the Far East, and sail north towards the Pacific coasts.

At the turn of the 20th century, Punta Arenas was the capital of the whole Patagonia and its dominance and influence was felt particularly in the southern part of the continent. The economic, social, cultural and institutional development it achieved, brought worldwide fame to Punta Arenas and these southern lands. Even today, the architecture of the city of Punta Arenas bears witness to those golden years.

Se ven aves como el carancho, patos silvestres, cormoranes y golondrinas. great historic interest, these two attractions were the primitive buildings erected by the Spaniards who were the first to colonise the coast along the Strait of Magellan. At present, the Bulnes Fort is a historic reconstruction of the fortress where Chile established the first settlement in Patagonia and where it took possession of the Strait and the surrounding land in 1843. It stands at Km. 60 along Route 9 going south, on the heights of Punta Santa Ana, one hour away from Punta Arenas. There is a good access road there, leaving Punta Arenas and bordering the Strait. Along the coast wreckage can be seen of ancient ships that foundered on this dangerous stretch of coastline. Along the way and among the towns passed through, the visitor will come across Rinconada Bulnes, a small fishing village. At Km. 55, there is a diversion to River San Juan, an excellent place for fishing or just looking around. At this junction, the right hand road takes visitors along a stretch of 7 kms, whilst the left hand road leads to Port Famine, 2 kms from this junction. Port Famine straddles the shore of Buena Bay and it is here where Captain Sarmiento de Gamboa was to found the city of King Felipe in March 1584. This attempt at a Spanish colonization ended tragically: its inhabitants all died of hunger. Years later, the English corsair, Thomas Cavendish dropped anchor here and, on discovering the remains of the Spanish colony, rebaptized it with the name of Port Famine, which it still conserves to this day. Inside the Fort is a church with its baptistery as well as the prison, water wells, an arsenal, office and stables. Just outside the museum, in one of the stables near the main entrance, is a canoe built by the indigenous peoples, a cart and a primitive plough used by the colonizers. During the trip to the Fort, a wide range of plant and animal wildlife can be admired, with glimpses of birds such as the mountain caracara, wild ducks, cormorants and swallows. There is a diversity of native flora species of such as lenga, ire, coige, romerillo, ciruelillo, canelo and the Chilean cypress.

Ro Verde
Rio Verde
The capital of the municipality of the same name, it is located 87 km. to the north-west of Punta Arenas on the shores of the Gulf of Skyring and is an important cattle center surrounded by spots of incomparable natural beauty such as the Fitz Roy Canal, the Otway Sound and River Verde. Rodeos and competitions are staged here every year. From Rio Verde, a ferry takes passengers to Riesco Island which is located between the Sounds of Otway and Skyring. Gradually, the road penetrates the extensive plains of Patagonia, but before leaving the shores of the Strait, and from the heights of Cape Negro at Laredo Bay, the facilities of the National Petroleum Company (ENAP) are sighted, together with its foundries, platforms, pipelines and tugs. This area is one of the most important bases for this petroleum exploration and exploitation company, and at Cape Negro the industrial production plant for butane and propane gas is found as well as storage tanks and terminal wharfs. The land, with its more austere landscape, is of brush, scrub and the wild grasslands of the Pampa. 30 kms away from here is one of the largest cattle ranches in the area: Kon-Aiken, the center for the Estrecho de Magallanes Cooperative, where shearing festivals are held every year. A few kilometers along the main road, visitors will come upon the seawater lake known as Otway Sound and from here the peaks of the Pinto Range can be seen in the distance. To the right are a series of lagoons: Toro, Entrevientos, Palomares as well as other smaller ones, whilst the Entrevientos estancia stands out for its traditional construction. Along the coastline, birds from lake and seashore habitats can be spotted, such as wild ducks of different sorts, coots, rapacious birds nesting, as well as swallows, seagulls and others. Bordering the Fitz Roy channel which joins the Sounds of Otway and Skyring some 10 kms inland, the River Verde Hotel is reached with its buildings reminiscent of earlier Patagonian times.

Mylodon Cave.
Located 24 kms to the north of Puerto Natales, this Natural Monument consists of three caves and a rocky conglomerate called the Devils Chair . The majority of these caves are 150 meters above sea level, 30 meters high, 80 meters long and 200 meters deep. Scientific interest in the place dates back to the year 1896, when skin, bones and other remains of an animal were discovered: the Mylodon, a huge herbivore that had been considered extinct for 10,000 years. Besides the historic, scientific and cultural importance of the area around the Mylodon Cave, it does offer one additional attraction: its scenery and wildlife. The area is one in transition between steppe and forest and its local flora consists mainly of ire, calafate and romerillo. Animal life is abundant, specially the birdlife.

Before reaching the cave, the access road passes by the Devils Chair which is a rocky structure in the shape of an enormous armchair, which local lore holds it was used by the Mylodon as a seat. However, over time, the legend went out of fashion and so it became the place where the devil supposedly came to sit. This area is one of those controlled by the National Forestry Commission (CONAF), although there are beauty spots for picnicking, regularly visited by the inhabitants of Puerto Natales.

After passing Naufragio Point, to the left lies Port Bellavista and to the right Port Toro, a small jetty at the foot of the Serrano Glacier. Further away toward the north, a part of the Paine Massif can be glimpsed whilst the vessel chugs toward the coast, rounding Mount Balmaceda so as to pass in front of the glacier of the same name. This glacier has shrunk considerably in recent times and this is visible by looking closely at its slopes which have a rose-colored hue. It is fairly common to see enormous pieces of ice crash down into the waters of the fjord as the glacier slowly moves on its way down toward the sea. Along the northern flank of the hill flows the Serrano Glacier, which can be reached over land by climbing up to its large outflow.
The Park
Torres del Paine is unique inasmuch that it encompasses very different ecosystems in the one same place, resulting in an extremely high biodiversity. Thanks to its long geological history, the topography and the climate we find in this Park are very special and so it is an ideal niche for the existence of a large wealth of different groups of wild fauna and flora. 166 species have been identified in the Park, of which 25 are mammals, 126 birds, 6 are fish, 6 reptiles and 3 are amphibians. The Park can be crossed by car to its main attractions, some of which are not to be missed, such as:
The Paine Massif, with its majestic peaks that have become the most
characteristic and beautiful icon of the Park. The most attractive of these peaks are Paine Grande, Cuernos del Paine, Almirante Nieto, Paine Chico and the famed Towers themselves. Around them wind the trekking routes called O and W.
Lago Peho.
Lake Peho. This beautiful lake is the best visual field in which to observe
the Cuernos del Paine, and the environment around it is a landscape of unmatched beauty, with the backdrop of its green-coloured waters. At times, the mountains are reflected in the lake creating a spectacle of breathtaking allure.
Lake Grey and its glacier. With the Paine Massif as the backdrop,
the lake becomes a spectacle in itself. Its waters come from the Southern Ice Fields together with enormous icebergs that break off from the Grey glacier. Many of these icebergs reach the beach where tourists can be photographed standing beside these giants of ice. The waters of the glacier are grey in color due to a large amount of sediment and the lake can be crossed by boat as far as the glacier itself.

CAPE HORN
For decades, the long route that joined the Atlantic ports of the United States of America and Europe with the Northamerican ports on the Pacific coast, was around Cape Horn. It was the only expedite ocean route for sailboats and steamships, until marine traffic was opened between the two great oceans through the Panama Channel. Cape Horn is at the end of the world, where America ends or begins. It was discovered by Dutch merchants Shouten and Le Maire in 1616, when they were searching for a new access route to the Pacific Ocean. For centuries it has been an incredible challenges for experienced seafarers who see this crossing as one of their greatest feats. A sculpture of an albatross in flight was built here, in honour of all the men from different parts of the world who have lost their lives in the struggle to overcome the hazards of this rugged route. Cape Horn is located 703.8 km south of Punta Arenas and 165.6 km from Puerto Williams. It can be reached by a charter flight or by ship leaving from the city of Puerto Williams, or directly from Punta Arenas.

Rural tourism is not to be missed when visiting Patagonia. The estancias, once the refuge of colonisers and villages of cattle-farming estates, now open their doors to visitors, showing us their work, their gaucho culture and their cuisine, with the pleasure of enjoying a traditional lamb-on-the-spit. Various historic routes have also been developed in the region, following in the footsteps of the indigneous Anikenk peoples, explorers such as Fitz Roy, or naturalists like Charles Darwin, among others. Each corner of Patagonia has a long and fascinating history to it, including indians, explorers, pirates, naturalists and pioneers. Navigations have become a staple of Patagonian tourism. The fragmented geography of the fjords and channels and the Strait of Magellan, can be visited in cruisers, smaller vessels, zodiac boats, semi-rigid boats and kayaks. There are day trips or journeys lasting several days allowing tourists to visit glaciers and discover its rich marine wildlife, of which the highlight is the humpback whale at Francisco Coloane National Park. One or two-day bike expeditions are already characteristic of this region. It is very common to see travellers practicing cycle tourism through Torres del Paine National Park and on Tierra del Fuego, in a challenging, yet spectacular adventure. For those who prefer to rev it up, special programmes have been designed for motorcycles and 4-wheel-drive vehicles covering all the roads in the Region, from the end of all American roads to Torres del Paine National Park. The more daring can opt for rock climbing, mountain hiking, ice hiking and diving. There is also a variety of trekking circuits, such as the well-known O and W at Torres del Paine National Park, and the Dientes de Navarino circuit, the southernmost trekking route in the world, which is fast gaining followers.
