ON THE
ROAD AGAIN
Once the weather warms up, the lure of a road trip is often too strong for many adventurous motorists to resist. Those
who want to get away from it all and enjoy the minutiae of the trip often take to the road in short jaunts or extensive
sightseeing vacations.
For road-trippers, its often about the drive itself more so than the destination. Theres something appealing about hit-
ting the open road and seeing the sights you would otherwise if traveling by air.
Thanks to displeasure with customer service and rising prices for commercial fights, a growing number of travelers
are taking to the road, as is evidenced by the number of cars on the highways. Often affordable when done correctly, the
road trip is ideal for cash-strapped families or singletons looking to vacation on a budget.
ROAD TRIP TIPS:
* Give your car a good wash. Drivers who live in areas with heavy
snowfall should give their vehicles a thorough cleaning before
hitting the road for a spring road trip. Salt and sand can build
up on a vehicle over the course of a snowy winter, so a power
washing will help remove excess salt, sand or dirt and help
the car run more smoothly.
* Get the vehicle a tune-up. A tune-up, including an oil
change, should be part of your pre-trip planning.
Make sure winter hasnt caused any damage to the
vehicles body and ask your mechanic to perform
a thorough inspection of the vehicles suspension
and brakes. If any problems arise, address them before
embarking on your road trip.
* Subscribe to a roadside assistance program. Roadside
assistance programs, whether its AAA or a program
offered through your insurance company, provide a
measure of security to road-trippers. Many roadside
assistance programs provide variety of emergency as-
sistance for members, including:
- towing service if your vehicle cannot start or operate safely,
- battery service if your cars battery needs a jump,
- fat tire service if you get a fat tire and dont have a spare or cannot change the
tire yourself,
- fuel delivery service if your car runs out of gas, and
- lockout service if you lock your keys in the car.
These services can act as a safety net should an issue arise when youre on the road and far
away from home or far away from a service station. Keep your membership card in your
wallet and store their customer service number in your cellular phone should you acciden-
tally lose your membership card or lock it inside your car.
* Bring cash as well as credit cards on the trip. When embarking on a road trip, dont
assume you will have ready access to an ATM on your trip or at your destination. This
means you may reach a point when you have no cash on hand. While its a good idea to

PROBLEM OF
SUN GLARE
WHILE DRIVING
Snowy weather and icy roads may create their share of automobile acci-
dents, but sun glare can be a hazard that few people anticipate.
There are certain driving hazards that people often expect when getting
behind the wheel, including slippery roads, an animal darting out or reduced
visibility due to driving rains. But sun glare may not be something drivers
expect to contribute to hazardous conditions.
Sun glare can be a nuisance and make for dangerous driving, particularly
in the early morning or late afternoon when the sun is low on the horizon.
The angle of the rays may render sun visors useless. Accidents due to sun
glare do occur and more frequently than drivers may know. In October 2007,
sun glare was responsible for at least two accidents in Colorado. In the frst
few months of 2010, data compiled by the Abu Dhabi Traffc Department
showed the suns glare was blamed for 22 minor crashes. Sun glare is a prob-
lem all around the world.
To prevent sun glare from becoming a hazard when youre driving, con-
sider these safety tips. ----------------------------------------------------------->

(BPT) - What is that rattling? Is it
serious? We all can get a little paranoid
about a new sound our car is making.
Those sounds can certainly be annoy-
ing, but what people dont realize is
sometimes those sounds may be linked to
something more serious.
About 7 percent of car crashes are
caused by some kind of vehicle failure,
with tire degradation and brake system
failures topping the list, according to the
National Motor Vehicle Crash Causation
Survey from the National Highway
Traffic Safety Administration. But tire
and brake failure arent the only types
of vehicle problems that can lead to
accidents - engine, steering system and
suspension failures also cause crashes.
Getting your oil changed, tires rotated
and brake pads checked regularly not only
helps keep your car running smoothly,
but it also helps keep you and your fam-
ily safe, says Matt Myers, senior vice
president of claims with Erie Insurance.
Its also important to check your cars
transmission fluids and get the 50,000-
mile and 100,000-mile checks. It might
sound like a lot, but regular preventative
maintenance is the best way to keep those
strange car noises - and accidents - to a
minimum.
Here are six common car noises peo-
ple hear and what they could mean:
Humming or groaning
When you hear humming while driv-
ing at faster speeds, its a sign there prob-
ably is some wear on your tires, which
can lead to serious issues. It could be
located on the insides of your tires, which
is hard to diagnose on your own, but not
having it checked is a risk, because the
steel belts in the tire might be coming
apart.
Growling
This noise could change or even go
away when you turn the wheel, but it is
usually caused by a defective front wheel
bearing. The change in noise could be a
result of the shift in the weight of the car
as you turn.
Whining and creaking
You might hear these noises backing
up or turning. It could be the result of a
ball joint or tie rod seizing up.
Squeaking
This can be a high-pitched, steady
annoyance that lets you know its time to
get your brake pads checked or replaced.
Grinding
This sound means two pieces of metal
are touching when they shouldnt be. This
sound could be a multitude of things:
brakes, powertrain, suspension or some-
thing else. Whatever the case, a grinding
sound means you need to get your car
checked out as soon as possible.
Hissing
A hissing sound might occur after you
turn off your ignition and can sometimes
be followed by smoke from under your
hood.
The next time you hear strange noises
coming from your car, dont just turn up
the radio to drown them out - get them
checked by a mechanic. Ignoring those
noises today could lead to a dangerous
and expensive situation tomorrow.

(MS) -- Most people today are inter-
ested in saving money. With an economy
that hasnt fully rebounded and econom-
ic uncertainty still looming, the search
is on for ways to stretch money further.
Unfortunately, some motorists think that
skimping on routine vehicle maintenance
is an easy way to save a few dollars.
While this might work in the short term,
failure to properly maintain a vehicle will
almost certainly come back to haunt you
down the road. The experts at AMSOIL
INC., the industry leader in synthetic mo-
tor oil, urge drivers to protect their vehi-
cle investments by practicing continued
maintenance of their cars and trucks for
reliable performance and retained value.
Many are aware of the old adage, You
have to spend money to make money.
When it comes to vehicle maintenance,
drivers should spend money to save mon-
ey, since failing to maintain a vehicle can
cause its resale value to plummet. Rou-
tine maintenance such as tire rotation and
oil changes can prevent costlyrepairs to
the engine and transmission, among oth-
er things. A car is a long-term investment
and the better drivers treat their vehicles,
the better those vehicles will treat them
in return.
* Dont skimp on necessities. Its
best to replace a timing belt, spark
plugs and tires on schedule, rather
than risk inconvenient vehicle break-
downs and the need for costly repairs
in the near future. Staying on top of
monitoring worn auto parts both big
and small will result in less wear and
tear, helping the vehicle retain its re-
sale value.
* Follow guidelines for oil chang-
es. Motor oil is the lifeblood of your ve-
hicles engine, and its best to adhere to
oil change schedules set by either the ve-
hicle or lubricant manufacturer. This will
ensure the vehicle is adequately lubricat-
ed and running as effciently as possible.
When selecting motor oil consider syn-
thetic lubricants, which greatly enhance a
vehicles performance. The uniform mo-
lecular structure of synthetic oil helps en-
gines operate more effciently by reduc-
ing friction and wear, while improving
performance in extreme temperatures.
Premium synthetic motor oils also have
the ability to improve fuel economy and
are better for the environment because
they require fewer changes.
* When cold weather arrives have
antifreeze performance checked. Your
mechanic should be happy to check an-
tifreeze levels for free. When a hydrom-
eter shows it can no longer withstand
temperatures of 30 degrees or lower, the
antifreeze should be replaced. This typi-
cally occurs every two years. Its also a
good idea to occasionally turn on the air
conditioner in the car during the winter,
just to ensure it stays lubricated.
* Keep tires properly infated. Fluc-
tuations in temperature can mean fuc-
tuations in the infation level of tires
as well. Tires that are not properly in-
fated can lead to poor fuel effciency
and premature wear. Its a good idea
to get in the habit of checking the PSI
level at least once a month.
* Use well-tested products. There
are shelves and shelves of products at
auto parts stores and big box retailers.
It pays to do your research into the
products professionals recommend.
Since the early 1970s, AMSOIL has
been an industry leader in synthetic mo-
tor oil and garners the testimonials of top
auto racers, automotive enthusiasts and
regular drivers worldwide. More infor-
mation is available at www.amsoil.com.
* Set up a maintenance schedule and
document maintenance. Whenever you
do routine vehicle maintenance or have
signifcant work done, keep good re-
cords. Keeping track of maintenance can
be useful to show how well you cared for
the car and increase its resale value when
it comes that time.
