My Research Question(s): How and why do birds know when to migrate? Content Response
Prompts: A Main idea or key concept Important information related to my research question(s) A short quotation I might be able to use Some Prompts: How does the information provide a response to the research question Why is this information is a key point What does the information mean to me? How valid, accurate or reliable is this information?

My Content:

The main idea of the article is the findings of six migration genes in a birds DNA. The genes are said to be one of the ways birds know when and how to migrate from year to year and generation to generation. The gene is said to involuntarily tell the birds when to begin altering their eating habits to a higher fat diet. This behavior helps the birds sustain energy for the long periods between stops during migration. The gene influences the energy levels of the birds causing a change in body temperature to alter the metabolic rate of the fat usage. A quote by researcher Francisico Pulidsu says, It is the first demonstration of a specific gene that is important for the expression of migrating behavior in birds.

My Response: The information is form a creditable source the Science Online Journal; it also provides information from the result of much resent research. The article helps provide answers to the key question by providing information about the genes birds have that assist in involuntarily letting them know when and how to migrate. The information is a key point for answering my question because it shows evidence based facts about one of the reasons birds know how and when to migrate. The information means a great deal in helping to answer my question and provide research backed evidence for my research.

The main idea of the article is about the birds ability to sense when to migrate and how The information in the article is from credible these sensations take place. source and was provided on the academic
research site EBSCOhost.

My Response:

Birds have a small amount of magnetite in their bodies that acts like an internal compass when migrating. It allows the bird to feel when they are close to the poles or the equator by sensing the changes in the earths magnetic pull. Changes in the seasons trigger a release of a hormone that begins to turn the excess food intake to fuel and makes them feel restless. The birds also sense when to migrate by when food supplies become scarce and the days length shorten.

The article helps to answer the key question by stating the reasons birds migrate and how they instinctively know where to go. The information is a key point for answering my question because it shows facts about different instinctive ways birds know to migrate. Supports the information from the first article about specific migrating genes being present in birds DNA. The information acts to support my understanding and to answer my question. It provides multiple examples of how and why birds migrate.

The main idea of the article is about the birds natural magnet compass and how it is used. The information in the book is from credible Not all birds migrate at the same time; male birds usually migrate first to locate a nesting place. The magnetic field is least intense at the magnetic equator and most intense at high latitudes and poles. This creates a type of geographic landmark for the birds to follow. There is magnetite locating the palette of a birds mouth. This magnetite reacts with the magnetic stimulation it receives as the bird passes over the Earths natural magnetic fields.
source and was provided on the academic research site EBSCOhost. The article in the book helps to answer the key question by discussing the birds ability to sense magnetic impulses and how this ability to used. The information is a key point for answering my question because it provides information that elaborates on the physical characteristics birds have that allow them to migrate successfully. The information acts to support my understanding and to answer my question. It provides more details to what the magnetite is and how birds use this to assist when migrating.
