Introduction
This special instruction has been written in order to provide procedural information for purging trapped air out of a marine pressurized cooling system.

Materials Needed
Cap that is used to purge the cooling system Stant 11329 Cap or an equivalent The additional amounts of the proper type of coolant that are needed

The cap that is used to purge the cooling system will safely purge the air that is trapped in a pressurized cooling system. This is done by lifting the lever on the cap rather than removing a pressurized cap. The cap will eliminate the potential hazards of hot pressurized coolant that can escape from the cooling system. Also, the cap will successfully purge trapped air.

Procedure

Pressurized system! Hot coolant can cause serious burns, injury or death. To open the cooling system filler cap, stop the engine and wait until the cooling system components are cool. Loosen the cooling system pressure cap slowly in order to relieve the pressure. Read and understand the Operation and Maintenance Manual before performing any cooling system maintenance.

1. Remove cooling system pressure cap. 2. Top off the heat exchanger with the proper type of coolant. Note: If the proper type of coolant is not used, gelling of the coolant can occur.

3. Check the fluid level in the overflow tank. The coolant level must be at the add fill mark for the addition of coolant.

4. Install the Stant cap that is used to purge the cooling system with the lock lever in the raised position in the place of the pressurized cap that is installed at the factory.

5. Start the engine. While the engine is coming up to operating temperature, open the purge valve that is on top of all the turbochargers in order to purge the coolant. Leave the valve open until a steady trickle of coolant can be seen. When a trickle of coolant can be seen, close the purge valve. 6. Run the engine until the engine reaches normal operating temperature and the thermostat opens. This may require putting the engine under a 30 percent to 40 percent load to achieve at least 79 C (175 F). Note: An overheat condition can occur when the engine is run at a continuous heavy load with the cap that is used to purge the cooling system in place and the lever in the UP position. 7. Monitor the overflow tank. The level of the coolant will rise. Air bubbles that are being purged will be present in the overflow tank when the thermostat opens. 8. Continue to run the engine until no bubbles are observed. A decrease in the coolant level in the overflow tank may be noticed on some systems. This is a normal condition and the coolant level must be allowed to drop until the coolant level stabilizes. 9. Bring the engine back to an idle condition and bring the engine to a stopped condition. 10. Remove the cap that was installed in Step 4. The cap that is used to purge the cooling system will not be pressurized. Note: The cooling system is not pressurized, but the coolant in the heat exchanger and the overflow tank can still cause serious burns, injury, or death. 11. Top off the heat exchanger and completely fill the overflow tank to the cold full mark.

12. If a low coolant level alarm occurs, back out the coolant level sensor until coolant drains out. Then reinstall the sensor and tighten the sensor. a. If the low coolant level alarm continues, refer to the Troubleshooting section in the Service Information System (SIS). 13. Install original cooling system pressure cap. 14. Allow the engine to cool and recheck the coolant level. If an adjustment is needed, adjust the coolant level in both the heat exchanger and the overflow tank.
