5 mm needles

WARNING. Pay attention to needle size and whether single or double yarn (ie 2 strands of 8 ply) is being used. I have deliberately not mentioned colours in these patterns. Toys can be made with any colour combination the brighter the toy, the more the kids like them.

Materials. 60 gms main colour, small amount of contrast. 8 ply (double knit UK) (worsted weight USA) 3.00 mm needles (11 UK) (3 USA) 4.50 mm needles (7 - UK) (7 - USA) Body Use double yarn and 4.50 mm needles Using base lower body colour, cast on 14 sts loosely. Work in Moss Stitch throughout, except for 1st row of new colour, which will be a knit row. Inc into every st - 28 sts. Work 1 row. Next row: (Inc, work 1) to end - 42 sts. Work 3 rows. Next row: (Inc, work 1) to end 63 sts. Work 21 rows. Change to upper body colour. Knit 1 row. Work 13 more rows. Next row: (K1, P2tog) to end 42 sts. Work 3 rows. Next row: (K1, P2tog) to end 28 sts. Work 3 rows. Next row: (K2tog) to end - 14 sts. Head. Continue, using single white, and 3.5 needles. Purl 1 row. Next row: Inc in every st - 28 sts. Purl 1 row. Next row: (K1, inc) to end - 42 sts. St-st 3 rows. Next row: (K2, inc) to end - 56 sts. St-st 27 rows.

Place markers 5th row, centre - bottom mouth. 8th row, 8 sts apart in centre - top mouth. 12th row, 2 sts apart in centre - top nose. 13th row, 4 sts apart in centre - bottom eyes. 15th row, 4 sts apart in centre - top eyes. 17th row, 2 & 6 sts apart in centre - bottom eyebrows. 19th row, 4 sts apart in centre - top eyebrows. 23rd row, centre - edge of hat. Next row: (K2, K2tog) to end - 42 sts. St-st 3 rows. Next row: (K1, K2tog) to end - 28 sts. Purl 1 row. Next row: (K2tog) to end - 14 sts, B & T loosely. (draw yarn end through remaining stitches, but do not pull tight or fasten off) Join row ends of body and head, leaving enough space at top for stuffing, and at bottom for turning and stuffing. Stuff firmly. Make sure there is plenty of stuffing to hold head firmly on shoulders, but not so much that collar wont fit around neck. Hat. Using double contrast yarn and 4.5 needles. Cast on 56 sts. G-st 9 rows. Change to 3.5 mm needles and work in 2 row stripes. St-st 8 rows. K2, K2tog to end [42]. St-st 5 rows. K1, K2tog to end [28]. St-st 5 rows. K2tog to end [14]. St-st 3 rows. K2tog to end [7]. Change to pompom colour. Purl 1 row. Inc in every st [14]. Inc in every st [28]. Rev st-st 6 rows. P2tog to end [14]. K2tog to end [7] B & T tightly. (draw yarn end through remaining stitches, pull tight and fasten off) Oversew pompom row ends. Join hat row ends. Oversew border ends. Stuff pompom and draw opening tight. Stuff hat and place on clowns head. Slip st 6th row of hat border to head 4 rows below first decrease row at top of head. Arms. Using double white and 4.5 needles. Cast on 8 sts. Next row: Inc into every st - 16 sts. St-st 5 rows. Change to double dark colour.

Knit 1 row. Moss st 9 rows. Continue in moss st, and dec at each end of every row until 6 sts. Cast off. Join row ends of hand and sleeve, oversew cast on sts together. Turn and stuff. Place top of arm level with hem of collar. Collar. Using single thread of contrast colour and 4.5 needles. Cast on 84 sts. G-st 9 rows. Next row: (K2tog) to end - 42 sts. Next row: (K2tog) to end - 21 sts. Next row: (K1, K2tog) to end - 14 sts. OR Make a 14 st crochet spiral. Work 2nd row of 1 tr, 2 tr into alt. sts. Pompoms (make three). Using single contrast and 3.5 needles. Cast on 8 sts. Next row: Inc in every st - 16 sts. St-st 5 rows. Next row: (K2tog) to end - 8 sts. B & T tightly. Oversew purl side out. Place the three pompoms evenly down front and sew each one securely in place. With a long length of yarn again sew each pompom to clown. Face. Mouth: red. Eyes: black. Eyebrows: black. Nose: red. Cheeks: paint diamond shapes with pink high-lighter pen at corners of mouth.
