Aloha, Parents! Its April, and we have less than two months remaining in SY2012-2013! You may have noticed that spring is in the air. Our school gardens are beginning to bloom, and the golden plovers (kolea) are starting to show off their black vests, a sign that they will shortly leave Hawaii for their summer home in Alaska. Earlier, I shared the fabulous news about the Department of Defense Facilities Grant which will bring Hale Kula into the 21st Century. Since we heard the news that we were one of the priority schools to receive funding, its been a whirlwind of activity, planning and creating buildings that would address all the deficiencies in the Facilities Study. The initial groundbreaking will take place this summer, and we hope everything will be finished by summer 2016. It will be wonderful! We are looking for parent representatives for our School Community Council. The primary purposes of the SCC are to advise the school regarding the planning, budgeting, and implementation of the Academic and Financial Plan; to ensure that the Strategic, Academic and Financial Plans address the educational needs of the students; and to provide opportunities for input from members of the school community. You will be receiving a nomination form shortly; if you would like to run or if you know a parent who might be interested, please submit the nomination form by the deadline. If you need more information, our present parent representatives, Sam Pemberton and Lisa Honeycutt, can answer your questions. Before the 7:45 Bell

Just a friendly reminder that prior to the 7:45 AM bell, we ask all students who do not have direct adult supervision to wait on the sidewalk, main hallway by the front of the library or on the sidewalk between the flag pole and the cafeteria where Educational Assistants are there to supervise. Eagle Eye Award

Our goal is to recognize students who demonstrate outstanding deeds, great behavior, and good actions in school (student's who follow the GLO's and TRIBES Agreements). Students nominated for the Eagle Eye award will receive an Eagle Eye certificate and $1 PTO gift certificate to be used at the PTO school store. Also, their photo/ picture is posted on the Eagle Eye board inside the Cafeteria. Congratulations to our Eagle Eye students for March! Celebrate National Poetry Month!

Please visit the library's Poetry Blog to read poems, comment on poems, and even post a favorite poem. The Poetry Blog has links to oodles of poetry sites where students can discover some zany rhymes and even make some of their own. Help your child find a poem for "Poem in your Pocket Day" on April 18!

Reading gives you super powers @ the Story Laboratory Book Fair
Students will be previewing the book fair April 8-12. Your first chance to shop the fair will be Friday, April 12 after school. The book fair will be open daily from 7:00 am - 3:00 pm April 1518. Please stop by to find great books for all ages! Teachers' Wish Lists will be on the bulletin board outside the library. Take a peek at what books the teachers would like to add to their classroom libraries. Students and teachers LOVE receiving books for their classroom libraries. Book Fair revenues provide our school with resources, family events and professional development for teachers. We appreciate your support!

Book Fair Family Event:

Stop by the Book Fair Family event before heading to the Hale Kula Talent Show! The family event will be your last chance to shop the book fair and to explore many hands-on science stations. It's free and it's fun for the whole family!

Nene Ceremony

Three Hale Kula 5th graders entered and won the student Nene Award Contest! Danielle G., Sorenna J., and Madison W. created projects based on their understanding of the book The Lemonade War. As winners, they will be honored at the Nene Ceremony on April 18 and have lunch with the book's author, Jacqueline Davies. Take a peek at their digital entries by clicking the "student winners" button on the library's home page. 4th & 5th graders who attended Nene Lunch Discussions and posted on the Nene Blog are also invited to attend the ceremony. The Hale Kula PTO generously donated monies to cover the cost of the field trip. Thank you to the Hale Kula PTO for providing many students the opportunity to hear the author talk about her writing and receive her Nene Award.

Transition Center
Connie Blevens, Transition Coordinator Hale Kula Transition Centers mission is to assist new students and families in their transition to our school. We offer daily tours and informational sessions about our campus. Tours are available Monday, Thursday and Friday afternoons at 12:00pm or 11:30am on Wednesdays. We also offer a morning orientation and tour every Tuesday at 9:00am. Health Room Thanks the PTO

We really appreciate the generous donation of girls panties to the health room. They are much needed and will be put to good use. Big MAHALO!

PTO Notes
Do you have a great idea for next years PTO? Come share that idea with us for Volunteer Brainstorming on 17 April at 12:30 pm in P14. We will also have a General Membership Meeting on 24 April at 1:45 in P14 to vote on the next years PTO Board. If you would like to be part of the process please stop in and vote. Just a reminder you have to be a member of the PTO to vote. We also have Teacher Appreciation Week coming up in May. You will see flyers going home soon asking for help in celebrating our wonderful teachers and staff members at Hale Kula. The activities will take place May 6-10. As we finish up the school year we have one last Dominos Pizza Day, April 5. Thank you for your ongoing support of Hale Kula PTO. Water Play Day is May 17

Water Play is a fun opportunity for the students to play water activities. Each grade level will come to the field for 45 minutes, then change to dry clothes to finish out the day. Looking for volunteers to help out. Morning shift is 8:00am 11:30am or afternoon shift is 11:00am 2:00pm please email Ellen_Petry@notes.k12.hi.us if you can help.

Leaving Hale Kula?

If your child will not be attending Hale Kula next year please contact the office so that they can have a release packet ready for you to take with you. Just a reminder if your child's last day is May 24th, your packet will be ready for pickup on May 29th.
