HEADING: ART HISTORY LIBGUIDE

Johnson, 1

This LibGuide should help those interested in the History of Art navigate the many different resources available. Instead of focusing on a specific genre or time period, I chose to develop a LibGuide that provided information on general Art History references and databases. My thinking is once you are able to narrow your search down using these sources; they will help lead you to more specific areas of interest. Created for the students of Emporia State University, the links in my LibGuide direct you back to the Emporia State Library catalog to continue with your search. At the top you will notice tabs - these will direct you to a list of sources that fall under that heading. Bibliographies Below is a listing of just a few of the books the Emporia State University Library offers about the History of Art. I choice books that gave broad overviews of the subject in hopes that once a specific topic was found, more in depth searching could be done with sources listed in the books bibliographies. Types of Art Books

Exhibition Catalogs

- Document museum and gallery shows - Best source for high-quality images - Usually include artist biographies, curatorial essays, artist interviews and/or writings, and career chronologies. Look for Exhibitions as part of the subject heading. Museums are often listed as the publishers.

Artist Monographs

Books by or about artists published independent of any exhibition. Usually, these are indepth writings that analyze or provide context for an artist and his/her work. Look for words like Criticism and Interpretation in the subject heading of a book. Search using criticism or analysis as keywords.

Catalogue Raisonne
