About...
Second Chance for Animals is a registered 501(c)3 charity in the State of New Jersey. We currently provide support to the Franklin Township Animal Shelter (FTAS) by assisting at the shelter, manning adoption days at the shelter and offsite locations, transporting animals to veterinary appointments and providing financial support. We are particularly proud that through our support not only do we regularly provide supplies such as food and litter to FTAS; we pay for every animal to be spayed or neutered and micro-chipped prior to adoption. We also provide pet food to the Franklin Food Bank to help needy families keep their pets in a loving home and not surrendered to a shelter.

Kicks Off
SCFA kicked off our 2013 campaign with our General Member Meeting in February. At the meeting, we were able to re-cap last years successes, and discuss all our activities and plans for 2013. We enjoyed video slideshows of our four-legged residents, and our volunteers in action (both coming to a SCFA youtube channel near you). We laughed during our Silly Pet Picture Contest with entries from over twenty members, and set to the music of Respect from Aretha Franklin. And speaking of Franklin, our (un)official mascot presented a video of how we can get the word out about our organization and shelter, which also will be making a YouTube debut soon. Further, we enjoyed fresh baked cookies (thanks volunteers, Tara and Andi), and were able to hear from our board members and committee chairs regarding operations and upcoming opportunities. And last, we were reminded of our upcoming board elections (more information to follow).

2013!

So, thank you to the members that were part of the fifty strong who attended. I hope you liked the new format, and are spreading the word to our brethren who may have missed the meeting. Im hoping that everyone will be looking forward to our Fall General Meeting / Volunteer Appreciation Event (details still to come).

If you have any ideas on how we can continue to improve our meeting, please let me know. Dont forget all our upcoming events (Open Houses, Dog Walk, Tricky Tray, Shake-A-Cans, Adoptions & cleaning, socializations, etc.). Please help out where you can, the animals really appreciate it, and the rewards are impossible to measure. Thank you for all you do, we would not be as successful in finding new homes for our friends without YOU.

The Paris Hilton Effect

I have read that Chihuahuas are the second most common breed of dogs in shelters, pit bulls being the first. Chihuahuas became popular and desirable after Paris Hilton, Nicole Ritchie and other Hollywood starlets brought them into the limelight. Films like Beverly Hills Chihuahua and Legally Blond added to the breeds popularity. Now, years later, these dogs are flooding the shelters, especially in California. Because they are so small and were in high demand breeders jumped on the opportunity. Stories of horrible Chihuahua puppy mills frequent the news. Recently in Ohio, a puppy mill with 280 Chihuahuas was found only after one of the owners died suddenly of a heart attack. Seeing photographs and video footage of crates filled with dogs barely existing in filth is sickening, to say the least. Rosie, my black and tan Chihuahua was bred by her former owner and then they decided they didnt want her anymore. Rosie was very fearful of meeting new people when I first saw her but it was love at first sight for me. She reminded me of a pint sized Rottweiler. And she matched my Rotti/Shepherd mix. The shelter was really crowded at the time and Rosie was in a little crate in Steelers old office. Katie asked me if I would like to foster her until she could get spayed with my foster kittens the following week. When I brought her home, she barked for the first 2 hours, non stop. I even called Katie at one point desperate to make her more comfortable. Katie said she would settle down and she did. That was October 2009 and we have been inseparable since! In July 2010 I walked into the feral cat room and found another little Chihuahua in need of a second chance. A few small dogs were in the feral room as the shelter was very crowded at that time. The little white foxy looking Chihuahua mix caught my eye from the start. Katie found her walking all alone on a busy street. She was so cute and I thought she would make a great best friend for Rosie. I asked if I could take the little girl home for fireworks night but she had already been matched with a shelter employee. The following week, the little white chi mix was back at the shelter and ready for adoption. I did not hesitate to take her home. I struggled with naming her. I thought about the name Grace but was also considering calling her Lily after a shelter favorite of mine. I did decide on Lily, which is fortunate because the one thing Miss Lily does not have is grace.

Lily and Rosie
CandidCreatures Photography

Lily is so friendly and sweet and does the cutest little dance on her hind legs. Katie thinks she may be mixed with Shiba Inu. Rosie is a purebred Chihuahua. When I brought home a very, very old Shepherd/Rottweiler mix Stella, Rosie quickly showed her she was the boss by biting Stella directly on the nose. Sweet little Lily went right to the toy box, picked out a stuffed toy and brought it right to Stella! When Stella passed, Lily made me laugh when she got her head stuck in a box of tissues and ran around the living room! Rosie and Lily are the best of friends. They snuggle and sleep together and every night we have Chihuahua wrestling on the couch when the two of them play. They are the first dogs to the fence to remind the Rottweilers next door they are in charge of this part of the neighborhood. Chihuahuas make great pets. They are wonderful little dogs that can do well in apartments or in homes. Chihuahuas can be barkers, especially when faced with larger dogs or meeting new people. Because they are so small, there are some concerns. Rosie cannot be left outside by herself because a hawk could pick her for lunch as she is only five pounds. LIly weighs ten pounds. Harnesses must be used so that pressure from a collar and leash is not on their trachea. You also have to be careful not to let them jump too much from high surfaces since they are so small. I still look at Rosie and cant believe she is a dog sometimes, even after 3 years. If you are thinking of adding a small dog to your house, Chihuahuas are wonderful companions.

Remember to rescue though, we never want to buy from pet stores where the pups come from puppy mills!

Success!!

Santa Paws Results Are In!

Our 9th Annual Santa Paws was another great success raising over $4,000 for the animals of Franklin Township! We had 142 people come through with their pets and families over the 3 day event. The team did an outstanding job of making sure everyone got the best pictures possible. A big thank you to our Santa team this year: Santas: Bob Pezzano, Tom Young, and Gerry Harris; their photographers Melissa LaRue, Tracy Sullivan, and Alicia DeSordi; and the helpers: Judi Horvath, Julie Percarpio, Melissa Filippone, Jayne Wolff, Deana DeNino, and Heather Steel. Taking the pictures is just the first step. Without the behind the scenes team of computer and sales folks our clients would not have had the terrific experience they so deserved. Thank you to Sue Gates, Tina McDougal, Marjorie Romasz, Nancy Rayner, Pat and Lisa Revel, Tom & Kitty Solomita, Donna DiFelice, Janet Mangin, Stacy Megna, Donna and Matt Aumack, Rose Rivera, Patricia Kaufold, Diane Hein, Mayra Berros, and Florence Coffaro for making everyone feel at home from beginning to end. We had a special appearance by our Mascot, Franklin, on two Saturdays. Thank you to Lauren Davis and William Horvath for standing at the entrance to SGS and grabbing the attention of passerbys! Santa Paws is a big undertaking, and I cant thank everyone enough for helping to make this event so fun and successful. Until Santa Paws 2013 ....

Socialization Volunteers
For volunteers attending Thursday night socialization at the shelter, there are some changes you will need to remember:

1
Wish List
Dry Dog Food Dry Cat Food Purina Kitten Chow Laundry Detergent Pine Sol Hand Sanitizer

Wear an SCFA volunteer t-shirt so that you will be easy to distinguish from the general public. A Team Leader will be present to oversee adoptions and help answer questions the public may have. You are not expected to have to work with the public. The Socialization Leader will still be present to help you. Be aware that members of the general public may be present; be respectful. Do not allow members of the general public to handle the animals (until they have completed the pre-adoption form). Members of the public should only be present in the entry area, the cat adoption room, and the front dog runs.

My Chinchilla My Heart
I was a new volunteer with SCFA working my 2nd rotation at the Shelter. I had just started college and was ready to take on the world!! Then I saw himthis cute ball of salt and pepper fur sitting in the adoption room and knew I had to take him home! Someone had left him in a plastic wheel in front of the shelter door in the pouring rain. We already had two rescue dogs and there was a list of people who had already put their name to a waiting list to adopt this precious baby. I had previously raised a guinea pig for 8 years but knew nothing about Chinchillas so I talked to everyone in every local pet shop to get up to speed so I could take on the real challenge of convincing my dad!!! You see my dad had raised all types of animals including birds, dogs, cats, cavies, rats, mice, exotic fish and iguanas and he laid the entire roadmap out for me in what to expect over the lifetime of a Chinchilla but I persevered and he finally said yes. I was shopping with my mom when I got the call from Katie that I was selected to take him home!!! I gave such a scream that the sales people came running with concerned faces. When I finally brought him home, it was obvious that he was hand raised and handled quite often but he had scars from what were probably battles with other cage mates along with a severe eye infection.

Frankie

I will forever be grateful to the person who cared enough to bring him to the shelter. He looked like a Frank so that became his given name. After a few short months of TLC he settled right into the family. Chinchillas are affectionate and intelligent animals and need the same in return. Regardless of the type of day Ive had, I always put aside Frankie time and his little hugs always perk me up and he has wiggled his way into my heart. When you think about adopting a rescue pet, consider all the four legged creatures for they all need love and forever homes. Danielle Rivera

New Volunteer Scheduler for Second Chance For Animals.

We are currently looking to find a new Volunteer Scheduler for Second Chance for Animals. As you all know, Kitty Solomita has been our volunteer scheduler for the past year or so and has done an amazing job of keeping our volunteer adoption and special events staffed for SCFA. Unfortunately for SCFA, Kitty and her husband Tom, have decided to fly south. Both Kitty and Tom have been very active volunteers in many aspects of SCFA and we will miss them a lot! So now we need someone to fill Kittys shoes. Below is a brief description of the Volunteer Scheduler position. We are looking to have someone in the position to train with Kitty by May. The Volunteer Scheduler (VS) is responsible for adding adoption, fundraising and outreach events to the scheduler. The VS sends two emails out weekly requesting help for open spots and sends out one additional message if there is trouble filling the spots. The VS emails team leaders and Katie the weekend schedule and ensures volunteers are confirmed for the events they signed up for.

In Your Eyes
In your eyes I see Fear Having been hurt by so many And unable to trust a caring hand extended In your eyes I see Hurt The pain inflicted by hand or voice Where sometimes the greatest cruelty Is indifference and abandonment In your eyes I see Hope Wanting to trust and love again And longing for a soft caress and warm hug In your eyes I see Love The fire still burning deep, wanting to be home The wag of a tail, lick of a face, or gentle purr Still remembered from within

Every Event, Big and Small Helps to Get the Word Out!
Lubranos Fundraiser Easy & Delicious
Thank you all who participated in the Lubranos Pizzeria Fundraiser on February 6th. This event raised $100 for our four-legged friends, and allowed us another avenue to get the word out about SCFA. These type fundraisers, which are easy to set up (find a partner restaurant, have a flyer printed up, get the word out, and enjoy some delicious donations), and help get the word out to new audiences, are ways to keep SCFA in peoples thoughts. Thank you Judy H. for your work on this event. Now I know that $100 doesnt sound like a lot of money raised, but part of what we are doing this year with our Marketing/Outreach Committee, etc. Involves letting as many people as possible know about SCFA and the Franklin Township Animal Shelter. Remember that more exposure means more potential adopters, and more animals going to their forever homes. So, if you have an idea for a fundraising event (big or small), please reach out to Rose and Linda. Your ideas will determine how successful we can be in 2013 and beyond.

The Stress Factory Event

Thank you to all those who came out to support SCFA Sunday night at The Stress Factory Comedy Show! SCFA volunteers were out in full force. I hope you all had a fun night of laughs. Thank you to those folks who helped to spread the word and sell tickets, we had a great turnout of non-volunteers. In addition, and up until 30 minutes before the show, we had people coming in looking to purchase tickets on behalf of SCFA due to flyers they saw posted around Somerset, how awesome is that!! (posting those SCFA events flyers really does work) We raised $1,170 for the critters we support! We were thrilled since our goal was to hit $1,000! Thank you again for your continued support!

$2,500 Grant
SCFA would like to thank the Build-A-Bear Workshop Foundation for its very generous $2,500 grant for the Franklin Township Food Bank Pet Food Subsidy Program. In 2012, 418 families in Franklin Township with 520 dogs and cats took advantage of the pet food program. That was a huge increase from 2011, when 232 families needed this free food for their pets. This invaluable program cost SCFA more than $11,000 last year, and we could not have done it without our corporate and foundation supporters. Please support those who support us. Next time youre at the Bridgewater Mall, pick up a bear or two at Build-A-Bear and thank them for their very generous support of SCFA and the food bank program!

Thursday Evening Socialization

Thursday Night Cat Socialization is a very unique time for both volunteers and residents. It is a time devoted to just interaction & fun with our guests. EACH CAT deserves to be touched and handled. Dont let any of our cats sit on the sideline, and not be involved. They need to be stimulated, interacted with, and loved. This makes them more adoptable! Your one-on-one interaction will probably be the HIGHLIGHT of their week. Check with our Team Leader on where you can make an impact, and always remember to work your way from front to back only ... Please note: Volunteers should never go into the Quarantine unless specifically instructed to do so by a Shelter Staff person.

Board of Directors 2013 Elections!

Its almost time for our annual Board of Director elections. The Board of Directors is responsible for setting the policies and procedures that help keep SCFA successful. The Board is also responsible for the SCFA budget. Its a challenging, exciting and very rewarding experience. The Board of Directors meets once a month on the first Thursday of the month. Board members are required to attend the board meetings and they are also expected to attend member meetings. Board members are elected for a 2 year term. At the end of your term you have the choice of running for another term or not. We really need to add some new faces to our board, so I encourage everyone to consider running for a board seat. We are looking for energetic people who want to help us keep SCFA moving forward. Length of membership does not matter.

Please contact Lisa Revel at secretary@secondchanceforanimals.org by March 31 if you are interested and we can discuss the requirements in more detail.

Board meetings are open to all members. They are held the first Thursday of each month at the Library. Interested In Running For Second Chance For Animals Board Of Directors?
If so, please provide a short Bio to Lisa Revel, at secretary@secondchanceforanimals.org. Your Bio will be included in the ballots that get sent out to Second Chance for Animals members. Your Bio can be a short description about yourself and what you have done for SCFA and what you hope to accomplish if elected. Ballots will be snail-mailed to every member who has paid their dues for 2013. Election ballots go out in May and they are due back by the beginning of June. Results are read at the July Annual Meeting. If you are interested in running, contact Lisa Revel at secretary@secondchanceforanimals.org. Last but not least, perspective candidates will need to have a short phone interview to discuss the position.

Deadline to submit your Bio is March 31, 2013!
