Connection to PA Core Curriculum Standards:

British Columbia-Geography 12 IRPS: The Nature of Geography-Themes Resources of the Earth- Sustainability of Resources -Asses the compatibility of human activities and population growth with concepts of sustainability.

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to: Apply the Themes of Geography to ecotourism in the Pacific Maritime and Mountain Learning outcomes Region. Assess the viability of an ecotourism operation in this region. Assess the impact of an ecotourism operation Defend a position Obtain reliable information from a variety of resources

Students will examine a region using the Themes of Geography to determine if it is a suitable location for an ecotourism operation.

Assessment:

Students can create a web site or pamphlet to either promote a region for ecotourism or to convince a community that is not an acceptable proposition. Teachers can evaluate the worksheet and/or the presentation.

Procedures:

1. Introduce unit and explain the project using the rubric and the direction sheet 2. 3. Students will start to research country using computers and books. 4. Teach students how to use MapQuest.com. Put country into destination area so they know where their country is located. 5. Students will find their countries on MapQuest.com 6. Allow students to research the first few destinations along the way 7. Remind students how to research effectively 8. Explain to student that they should have 5 journal entries, each a paragraph long 9. Have students plan their trip in their journal entries. Make sure they stay on task and try to write in detail. 10. After students are done with their research, review tips on how to make a good PowerPoint Presentation 11. Have students make their PowerPoint Presentation 12. Revise and edit presentation 13. Go over grading rubric and how the teacher will be grading the project 14. Start presentations

Modifications for Differentiated Instruction:

For gifted students, the teacher will have them create a PowerPoint as well as another visual of their choice. I will also encourage them to have more sources. For special education students, the teacher will not require them to have as many sources. They also will only have to research a few facts about their country.
