Rev. Luke Roske-Metcalfe The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd Isaiah 43:16-21, Philippians 3:4b-14, John 12:1-8 March 17, 2013 Lent 5

English
In the name of the Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer, Amen. This morning we hear Johns account of the last event before Jesus enters Jerusalem. Jesus is gathered around a table with his friends, and among those present are Lazarus, Judas, Martha, and Mary. This event, a dinner in Jesus honor, includes two striking aspects that Id like to reflect upon today. The firstis what some describe as perfect act of discipleship. The second is a string of eight startling words from Jesus. First, Mary anoints Jesus feet with an insanely expensive jar of perfume. Its worth a years salary. Its ridiculous to think about. Many consider Marys act oneexample of perfect discipleship because Mary,in humble service, does something extravagant for someone else. Its unique and unexpected. Its an expression of faith that cantbe repaid. Her anointing of Jesus feet is an unexpected act of love that doesnt make much sense, yet one that we are somehow called to follow. The second thing Id like to reflect upon is a string of eight words fromJesus. He says: You will always have the poor among you.Jesus says this after Judas tries to chastise Mary for her extravagance. Judas thinks that the profits from the expensive perfume should have been given to the poor. Even though Jesus is clearly correcting Judas perspective, his words to Judas dont make much sense to me. You will always have the poor among you. These words from Jesus have been used in unfathomable ways throughout history. We have used them to justify the existence of poverty, concluding that poverty is one result of living in sin or that five pesos here or there wont make a difference.

We hear these words and take them for face value because it makes life easier for many. But based on what Jesus taught during his life, how he died, and for whom he died, I simply cant take his words at face value. I cant believe that one characteristic of Gods kingdom is poverty. So what then might Jesus mean? Jesus words seem to be a clear reference to Deuteronomy chapter fifteen. In this chapter, Moses describes the year of canceling debts. Every seven years, creditors were instructed to cancel debts that fellow Israelites held. This commandment was put in place because, and I quote, There need be no poor people among you. Jesus eight wordsto Judas, and to us, about the poor, do not seem to be descriptive of how things are, or even how thingsneed to be. In light of Deuteronomy fifteen, Jesus statement seems to be critical of Judas instinct to simply give money to the poor. Jesus might be reacting to the fact that giving fivepesos here or there really wont eliminate poverty on its own. We may very well always have the poor among us, if we only have the perspective of Judas, and only give money to the poor. But if we take Jesus response to Judas as instructive rather than descriptive, we might just begin to move toward new ways of living out extravagant and perfect discipleship, as Mary did. And so, in this last week before Palm Sunday and Holy week, I invite you to reflect upon the areas in which we, both as individuals and as a church, offer charity to those in need. Id like to urge you not to stop there. Reflect upon and imagine how we might practice a discipleship that is extravagant, humble, unique, and unexpected. Imagine a completely ridiculous expression of faith! I invite you to imagine these ridiculous expressions of faith because it is here that we, just like Mary did, might begin to participate in bringing about the Kingdom of God here on earth.Amen.

Rev.

Amn.
