Each question carry 14 marks 1.

a) Determine the horizontal and vertical displacement at joint B for the pin jointed frame shown in Fig. 1. The cross sectional area of the members are 1000mm2 and E = 2 X 105 N/mm2.

b) A UDL of 3 kN/m run 20 m long roar force and roles over a girder of 120 m span from left to right. Using influence lines state the shear force and bending moment at a section 40 m from the left support when the tail of the load 30 m from left hand support. 13.a) A circular rib hinged at the end and the crown is 12m span with central rise 3 m and carries a load of 40 kN at 2 m from left springing and 30 kN at 2.5 m from right springing. Calculate the reactions at the hinges and bending moment at the loads. (OR)

(OR) b) Determine the deflection under 60 kN load which at a distance of 2m from left support for a simply supported beam AB of span 6 m. the simply supported beam also carries a UDL of 20 kN/m throughout its span. Consider E = 2 X 10 5 N/mm2, and I = 2 X 10 8 mm4.

b.) aA three hinged parabolic arched rib ACB with supports at different levels. It has a horizontal span 15 m, the hinge at the crown C being 6 m horizontally from A and B. the arch carries a uniform load of 15 kN/m horizontally from A to C. calculate the horizontal thrust of the arch and the absolute maximum bending moment.

2 Marks 4. What is called absolute maximum bending moment?

12. a Five point loads of 8 kN, 8kN, 15 kN, 15 kN and 9 kN spaced at 7m, 8 m, 7 m and 6 min order to cross a girder of 80 m span from left to right with 8 kN load leading. Calculate the maximum bending moment at 30 m from left hand support and also the absolute maximum bending moment anywhere in the girder. (OR)

5. what are the types of arches? 6. what is called influence line? 7. define critical load.
