JTFD Launches New State Pilot Training Program

The Jackson Township Fire Department has been selected to participate in a new pilot firefighter training program for Indiana Department of Homeland Security District 8. This statewide initiative has been succession. There have been classes that have taken place in rural communities that due to scheduling conflicts have had to stretch out the class to almost a year and the students would take four to six week breaks during the class. These students have struggled to pass the written exam. This option breaks the program into four modules that allow students to complete the practical skills associated with the chapters included in the module and then take the written exam that includes questions from the chapters included in that module. Students are required to pass each module written and practical exam for each module The course consists of 4 modules which include Firefighter Mandatory/Basic and FF I&II. The students will spend a minimum of 196 hours of classroom, skills and written testing time. Upon successful completion of the

designed to create a more effective firefighting training program and to enhance the overall learning experience for each student. The new method is called the Modular Delivery option which is intended to assist students who wish to take a FF I/II class in short segments rather than a complete class in

course, the student will be certified for actual structural and interior entry firefighting. The student is also qualified to advance onto more specialized areas of the fire service. Current class roster consists of members of the Fruitdale, Hamblen and Jackson Township Fire Departments as well as private individuals from the community. We all have the same 168 hours in a week. Procrastination
Have you ever just looked at someone and knew the wheel was turning, but the hamster was dead? We are by nature creatures of habit easily lulled into complacency. As emergency responders, we must train weekly to keep complacency at bay. It requires qualities such as loyalty, patriotism, courage, selfdenial, vision, understanding, and sacrifice. As we begin this year at Jackson Township Fire Department, we are asking for your support in making this the best year ever. Federal and State requirements are increasing in the areas of fire training and education. These government regulations also effect equipment and safety standards and protocols which are required to be followed. We cannot allow the rising

Celebrate our department family

Did you know that firefighting is one of the most stressful occupations in the nation ? Even as volunteers, we can experience the same stress and fatigue as career firefighters. Because of the number of hours spent away from home and the physical and emotional demands, hazards , life risks naturally attributed to the fire service, it can take its toll on ones physical and mental health and well being. Whether its responding to a medical emergency at 3 am, spending 6 hours on a fire scene, or giving up weekends to raise funds for needed equipment, the fire service demands much from its volunteers. Every month, the department takes a break from normal training or business to celebrate special occasions. The fire house kitchen warms up with the smell of food and someone offers to make or donate a cake or two. Birthdays are always special and served up with the customary cake and ice cream. Come visit our family well save you a piece!

Solar Panels Good for the Environment but can pose hazard to firefighters
Do you have a rooftop or groundmounted solar photovoltaic (PV) system? A small PV system may provide energy to a single consumer, or to an isolated device like a lamp or a weather instrument. Large gridconnected PV systems can provide the energy needed by many customers. The electricity generated can be stored, used directly, or fed into a large electricity grid powered by central generation plants, or combined with one or many domestic electricity generators to feed into a small grid. Most commonly found here in Brown County is the single user system used to power and heat a residence. Because PV systems convert sunlight into electricity and that electricity is stored in the unit, there is always an electric charge contained in the system that is active from the unit to the electric meter. If a situation occurs and a fire should break out, homeowner should alert responders of the existing solar panels in the home AND homeowners and firefighters should never pull the electric meter as a means to shut off power to a building! This can cause serious damage to the unit as well as pose a serious life threat to the individual. Contact the department and we can set up a site inspection of your home so we can be better prepared in case of an emergency. Under normal operating conditions, photovoltaic (PV) systems are safe to operate. The PV industry has a good safety record, and only one recorded solar PV electrical injury to a firefighter has been reported worldwide. EMS Report - Rolling along - Be Alert

So, you discover a vehicle that has run into a building, driver slumped over the wheel, and two confused and bloody victims in the back. Various unknown chemicals and containers are strewn about the vehicle. There is an unfamiliar odor emanating from the car. What would you do? That is exactly the scenario that was set up for medical training for the members of the JTFD first response team. Any guesses what this scene was describing? Well if you guessed a rolling meth lab, you would be correct! Hard to believe that in these beautiful hills we would run into situations like this. But the facts are, as first responders, we face dangers like this every time we arrive on a scene. This exercise focused on the every day items that if overlooked could be a potential danger. Empty soda bottles, cold medicine, dripping fluids, batteries and cleaning solvents are harmless in themselves, but in combination can signal danger for a responder on a scene size up. Realistic reenactments scenarios are effective learning tools for all participating in either the responder or the victim roles. Be alert and always remember that Fools Rush In.
