FREUDS DEFENSE MECHANISM

Sigmund Freud said in his work that people often use defense mechanism to cope with anxiety and aggression. Usually the conflicts lasts short amount of time and can be resolved by themselves. But sometimes the conflicts last longer and eventually can harm us, so in that case the mind uses defense mechanism. Some of the defenses commonly used are: Repression Denial Reaction formation Projection Intellectualization Displacement Sublimation Rationalization

REPRESSION:
Repression can be described as the ability to keep the distressing thought and feeling buried in the unconsciousness.

Examples: A person has a phobia of spiders but cannot remember the

first time he was afraid of them.

DENIAL:
Denial is one of the best known defense in which a person is unable to face the truth that something bad is happening or had happened.

Examples: When someones loved one died they deny that to cope with the grief. REACTION FORMATION:
Reaction formation is the odd defense; in this a person does the exact opposite of what hes feeling.

Examples: Like treating someone you dont like in a very friendly manner. PROJECTION:
Projection is defined as subconsciously denying your wanted feelings or desire and then believing those feelings or desire are someone elses.

Examples: When something bad happens to you and you blame other
people for that.

INTELLECTUALIZATION:
Intellectualization can be described as blocking a bad memory from consciousness or distancing yourself from an emotional or stressful event or memory.

Examples: A woman who has been abused, studies similar cases and
learns self-defense rather than think about that stressful event.

DISPLACEMENT:
Displacement is defined as directing your feeling from its original source to someone else.

Examples: Like in a family the father gets angry at the mother and the
mother then shouts at her children.

SUBLIMATION:
Sublimation is the defense in which the unacceptable impulses are transformed into more acceptable action.

Examples: when a person likes to hit or hurt someone he may take

boxing or wrestling as a way to take out that aggression.

RATIONALIZATION:
Rationalization is something a person does on a daily basis; its defined as coming up with different excuses to justify a situation while denying your feelings.

Examples: Like a person steals so from feeling bad he just thinks that
the society is unjust and they deserve to suffer.
