1 FISH NETS

MATSYAFED NYLON NET FACTORY, KOCHI

The Matsyafed Net Factory has emerged as the pioneers in the fishnet industry in India. Established in the year 1966 at Ernakulam, this factory uses the latest in Japanese technology for producing good quality nets to the fishermen. This is the largest fishnet company in the public sector. The factory can make all type of nets used in the fishing industry like gillnets, trawl nets and seine nets. It can also make nets for other applications like agriculture, trap and bird control etc. The factory produces the best quality nets using nylon multi filament, nylon monofilament, multi monofilament and polyethylene. The factory has a production capacity of 450 MT per annum. It is equipped with 27 imported net making machines to ensure the best quality for the products. More than 50% demand for nets in the traditional and mechanised fisheries sector of Kerala is met by this efficient factory. In addition, it is also being exported showing its efficiency and quality.

1.Gill Nets: All gill nets are made in nylon multifilament (210/2 ply-10mm to 210/75 ply-450mm) and monofilament (0.12mm to 0.80 mm mesh size up to 450 mm) 2.Purse seine nets: All type of purse seine net for sardine, mackerel, tuna, horse mackerel etc. are made. 3.Trawl nets Trawl nets can be made up to any size of the boat as per specification 4.Monofilament nets All mono nets including multi mono nets from 0.12mm to 0.8 mm dia twine 5.HDPE Nets All nets up to 3mm thickness and mesh size up to 450 mm 6.Crap traps Traps for crab as per the customer specifications

4.2 CHITIN AND CHITOSAN

In India the process of separation of Chitin from the crustacean shell was developed by Central Institute Fisheries Technology. Matsyafed established a Factory at Kollam in 1988 for the separation of chitin from crustacean shell. It has an installed capacity for producing 50 MT of Chitin in a year. They are packed in powdered form(25 Kg/bag )or as flakes (15 Kg/bag) in polyethylene bags.

CHITIN
Chitin is a naturally occurring material separated from the shells of Shrimp, Crab, and Squid etc. During the processing of these species, the shell becomes a waste and by acid and alkali wash, the adhering materials are removed so as to separate chitin. The chitin/chitosan, is further processed by the users depending on the application.

CHITOSAN
Chitosan is obtained by refining chitin by above process and sun dried. Chemically it is an aminopolysaccharide. Chitosan was first produced in France during 1859 by Prof. Rouget. But commercial production of this product began only by 1970s. In India commercial production of chitin started for the first time by Matsyafed during 1988-89. Chitosan is an internationally acclaimed natural health care product for cholesterol, obesity and related health problems.

4.2.1 USES

4.3 FISH AND FISHERY PRODUCTS

MATSYA
Matsyafed produces a variety of value-added 'Ready-to-Fry' and 'Ready-toEat' seafood products of international quality. These products are marketed under the trade name of 'Matsya' and have become supreme in quality and excellence. The Ready-to-Fry products include Fish Slices, PUD Prawns, Squid Rings, Cleaned Mussel Meat, Frozen Cutlets and the Ready-to-Eat products include Pickles and Curries. The delicacies like Ribbon Fish, Tuna, Spanish Mackerel, Crabs and Octopus are currently exported to countries like China, Korea, the Middle-East & Sri. Lanka. An exclusive Marketing Division takes care of the specific requirements of the consumers of Kerala and ensures the supply of the products with promptness. 'Matsya' products are available at all major supermarkets and other frozen food outlets spread across the southern states as well as abroad.

MATSYAFED ICE & FREEZING PLANT

Matsyafed Ice and Freezing Plant (MIFP), situated near the fishing Harbour at Cochin, presents itself with full-fledged storage and refrigeration facilities conforming to International Quality Standards. Matsyafed has set the highest department for itself department product quality control. An inhouse Quality Control and R & D along with the most modern laboratory are dedicated entirely to ascertain that the product is of superior quality and in par with international standards. For securing maximum raw material

freshness and avoiding repeated raw material handling, a landing platform for berthing fishing vessels and a fleet of refrigerated and insulated trucks for transport have been set up.

4.4 FISH MANURE

Organic manure is widely accepted and utilized by the agricultural sector of Kerala as it ensures better yield and is soil friendly. Matsyafed owns two Fish Manure plants in Thrissur and Kozhikode Districts that produce agricultural organic manure. The trade name of fish manure is NUTRIFISH. Specialized products viz. Nutrifish Super Organic Manure is produced in Matsyafed Fish Meal and Oil Plants, Azhikode Jetty in Trichur District and West Hill, Kozhikode. The Nutrifish Super Organic Manure is produced since 1984 and the main ingredient is Prawn shell and other fish wastes. Other ingredients of the mix are Neem cake, castor oil cake, bone meal etc. in special combination to produce the highly fertile Nutrifish Super Organic Manure. This product is highly appreciated by the farmers all over Kerala and approved by the Agricultural Department, Government of Kerala.
