GRAMMAR USAGE
Grammar - is a science that classifies the various ways in which words are used for the conveyance of thoughts and ideas. Its function is not to prescribe how people shall speak or write, but to seek out and formulate the general principles that underlie the modes of speech and written expression prevalent among literate persons. This involves the study of words as used in relation to each other as words do not individually constitute speech. Hence, Grammar takes the sentence as its unit (Cannon, 1997). Classification of Words: 1. Noun - used to name anything. 2. Pronoun - used for or instead of a noun; it shows the person or thing without naming it. 3. Adjective - describes or limits or modifies a noun, pronoun, or noun phrases. When it occurs after a linking verb, it modifies the subject of the linking verb and is called a predicate called a predicate nominative. When it occurs before a noun or noun phrase which it modifies, it is called attributive adjective. 4. Verb - asserts something about a person or thing; it denotes action or state of being. 5. Adverb - modifies a verb, an adjective and another adverb. 6. Preposition - a word placed before a substantive, its object (noun or pronoun) to indicate the relationship between that object and an action. 7. Conjunction - a word used to join words or group of words together. 8. Interjection - a sound or noise a person makes when he is excited or to express some strong feeling. As words are classified according to the work they do and not according to their form, there are many words that can be classified in varied ways. For example: a) He came by a very fast bus. (adjective) b) John walks very fast. (adverb) c) He is going to fast for two days. (verb, infinitive form) d) At the end of his fast, he will have a very light meal. (noun) Noun - a name of person, place, thing or idea. 2 main classes of nouns: Proper and Common Nouns are grouped according to the kind of thing they name: a) concrete noun names a thing that is tangible; can either be proper or common. It can be perceived by one or more senses. Example: water, guitar, flower, table, electric fan, book Example: colony a group of ants constellation a group of stars choir a group of singers faculty a group of teachers bouquet a bunch of flowers f) compound nouns are nouns made up of two or more words written as one word (basketball), two words (high school), and hyphenated (sister-in-law) Cases of Nouns: Nominative, Possessive and Objective Gender: Masculine, Feminine, and common Number: Singular and Plural
