Overview The University of Adelaide is one of Australias oldest and most prestigious tertiary institutions. The University is associated with 5 Nobel Prize-winners 2 in Physics, 2 in Medicine and 1 in Literature and has produced over 100 Fulbright Scholars and more than 100 Rhodes Scholars. The University of Adelaide is a world-ranking research-intensive University, ranked in the top 1% of universities in the world (based on the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, QS World University Rankings and the Jiao Tong World University Rankings), with significant research strengths in sciences, health sciences, engineering and social sciences. The University is home to a number of important research institutes and centres. These are focussed on major issues of national and international significance food production, energy, climate change and environmental sustainability, and health. The University is also involved in a number of cooperative research centres which link key industries with government and higher education research institutions. The research and teaching activities of the University have a strong international orientation. Its student population of 25,000 includes more than 6,000 students from over 90 countries around the world, and the great majority of its academic staff have international qualifications and experience. Water One of the key research centres within the Environment Institute at the University is the Water Research Centre which brings together scientists, engineers and economists to address water management issues. The major areas of strength are: water resources and infrastructure modelling; water catchment and distribution processes; water quality, treatment and reuse; soil hydrology; and freshwater ecology. Natural Resource Management (NRM) The University of Adelaide has established the Environment Institute to tackle some of the most serious environment challenges facing Australia and the world. Research undertaken within the Institute delivers know-how and understanding that will underpin

improvements in the management of natural resources such as water, soil, plants and animals under changing climatic and economic conditions. Additionally, the Waite Research Institute at the University brings together researchers from a range of disciplines including plant biology, genetics, soil sciences, agronomy and agricultural economics with the aim to find solutions to global problems such as the challenge of ensuring global food security. Mining Industries The University of Adelaide is one of four Australian universities involved in the Mining Education Australia joint venture, which provides for a common curriculum in all these universities during the final two years of a Bachelors degree in mining engineering and enables students to graduate from a program that is supported by the largest mining companies in the world. The University is also the home of the Australian School of Petroleum, the pre-eminent centre in this country for education and research in petroleum geosciences, petroleum engineering and petroleum business; this School also has strong industry support and attracts many international students from around the globe. Further, under the umbrella of the Universitys research Institute for Mineral and Energy Resources, research into clean energy is being conducted through the Centre for Energy Technology and the Centre for Geothermal Research. The Institute for Minerals and Energy Resources provides integrated research, education, and professional consulting services across all aspects of the mining and energy resources industries, from exploration through processing to international trade. Governance The University offers a number of programs which deal with various aspects of governance, for example environmental governance and global governance. The School of Economics also offers a program in the area of public policy, which provides an understanding of the motivations for and the processes of policy making from an economic perspective.

Rural Livelihoods Two of the Universitys campuses are devoted exclusively to research and teaching in agriculture and agricultural economics, and together they comprise the greatest collection of expertise and research facilities in the southern hemisphere relevant to the sustainable production of food and wine. On the Universitys Waite campus, we have the Australian Centre for Plant Functional Genomics, the Australian Plant Phenomics Facility, the Australian Wine Research Institute, the Wine Innovation Cluster, the Centre for Soil-Plant Interactions, and the FoodPlus Research Centre. The work carried out on this campus underpins much of Australias cereal crops and wine export industries. On the Roseworthy campus, the focus is on farming systems, including crop agronomy, weed management, agro-forestry, and on animal science and veterinary science. The research carried out on this campus has particular relevance to beef, pork and poultry production, while new facilities to support the aquaculture industry are under development. The state-of-the-art Veterinary Health Centre contains the very latest laboratory facilities for the diagnosis and treatment of animal diseases and is capable of conducting examinations of most large farm and zoo animals.
