Second session: Leadership

First Task
Role of leadership capability in building communication capability

Leadership is the skill of motivating, guiding, and empowering a team towards a desired goal. If we
look at all the definitions, we find leadership is an Influence process, As leaders are individuals who facilitate the movement of a group of people to achieve a definite goal. Once a leader gets an idea, he has to share it with others, provide information, co-ordinate & balance the relations between all members. Here, in all the activities we see communication capability is a must.

If we look at the picture, we see 4 words. Theyre highly inter-related with each other. This picture illustrates that in a TEAM, leader has to MOTIVATE the members in order to get SUCCESS. For a proper communication, understanding each other is really needed. Specially in motivating, its a must. In business, a leader will have to express what he is trying to say & the employee will have to understand it the same way. Only then, a proper communication will occur & itll bring out a positive outcome. Todays business world is crying out for the leaders who are communicative. A true business leader has to have integrity, confidence, courage, willingness to take risk, passion, vision, managing capability, creativity, skills, commitment, honesty, self control, good sense of judgment, great personality etc. Whereas a good communicator always has a positive attitude, delivers a clear-concise message, listens and understands others, asks for clarification when needed, is aware of body language & praises others when its praiseworthy.

There is a key linkage between leadership and communication skills. If anyone is highly skilled in communication, then people will understand him and thats the prime condition in leadership. Ultimately developing communication skills will automatically develop leadership skills. A leader always takes steps in crisis, thinks & acts creatively in tough situations. Leadership cannot be taught, but it may be enhanced through mentoring & coaching. Look at Bill Gates; despite his failures at the very beginning, he has driven Microsoft to success with continued passion. Look at Steve Jobs; He has shown the world what innovation/creativity is. Now whole world follows his ideas & strategies, which has given him an exemplary identity of a leader. looking at history, we find Prophet (sm.)- the most iconic leader of all time, Martin Luther King Jr.- famous for standing up for the rights of African Americans, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman- the pioneer of the liberation of Bangladesh, Dr. Mahathir Mohammad- the one behind Malaysias revolutionary development. Their communication skills were of a different level, their one speech was enough to create revolution in their blood & bring the best out of anyone. Getting inspiration from them, We will be that leaders who will add value to the people; who will work not work just for our personal interest rather will work for others interest; who will motivate and inspire. We will be that leaders who will try to communicate with others and figure out others problem & solve them, and will have strong moral objectives which will drive our activities. Lastly, to be a good leader there is no second choice other than building good communication capabilities. The more one is capable in communicating, the more he has leadership capabilities. So to sustain & excel as a leader in this business world, we should develop our communication abilities.
