Beef, Veal and Lamb Report

Beef, Veal & Lamb- Beef output last week fell 1.6% but was .7% larger than last year. Beef output will be light this week due to the Easter holiday which may support prices st in the near term. The March 1 cattle on feed inventory was 7% smaller than '12 and cattle placements into feed lots in Feb were 14% less than a year ago. Beef output this spring is forecasted by the USDA to be down 1.7% versus '12. Still, beef demand is lackluster. Forward beef sales last week were 55% below the five-year average for the week. If beef demand doesn't improve, it may temper this season's expected price increases for beef grill items.

Oil and Grains Report

Oil & Grains- Recent storms in the Midwest have moderated the drought which is good news for the upcoming corn and soybean crops. Still, fairly high grain prices could persist this spring.

Dairy Report
Dairy- CME butter prices have softened. American butter stocks were up 17.7% in Feb versus '12 and were the largest for the month since '94. International butter prices continue to trade at a healthy premium to U.S. butter which is supporting exports. Still, it may take a few months to clean up the excess butter stocks. The butter market could face weakness in the near term. CME cheese prices are mixed. U.S. cheese inventories in Feb were 4.5% above a year ago and were the highest for the month since '84. This may limit seasonal price increases for cheese this spring.

Pork Report
Pork- Pork output last week decreased 1.2% but was 1.4% larger than the previous year. Pork production is being curbed this week due to the Easter holiday which could support pork prices next week. The price tendency for pork over the next few months is usually higher. But, the USDA is forecasting production to be .9% larger than '12 which may temper any significant price gains. Feb 28th U.S. frozen pork holdings were up 2.3% versus '12 but belly stocks were historically limited. Pork belly prices are usually flat during Apr.

Poultry Report
Poultry- Recent data points to expanding chicken production this spring. The daily average broiler-type chick hatch during Feb was 1.3% larger than last year. Average daily pullet placements in Feb were up 5.5% compared to the previous year. The chicken breast markets are firming at a stronger rate than usual for the winter and early spring. But, further market gains for chicken breasts this spring may be tempered due to better production. The ARA jumbo cut chicken wing index has fallen 17.5% from its Jan peak. This time last year, this index only declined 6.7% from its winter peak which suggests that larger chicken output is compounding wing price losses this year. th Feb 28 cold storage chicken inventories were up 6% versus '12.

Seafood Report
Seafood- Shrimp prices are rising.
Gulf of Mexico shrimp landings in Feb were 7.2% below '12. Further, year-to-date Gulf of Mexico shrimp landings through Feb were also 7.2% less than the three-year-average. This was due in part to high fuel costs that have challenged fisherman margins. Still, the recent surge in the U.S. dollar valuation may improve U.S. shrimp imports. History points to higher shrimp markets this spring.

Produce Report
Produce- The chief lettuce harvest has begun to transition to Huron CA. Favorable weather this week in CA is likely to enhance the lettuce crops. Iceberg lettuce prices are finally trending lower but are still historically inflated. The downside risk for the lettuce markets from here could be notable. Early spring cold temperatures in FL may hinder tomato crop output in the coming days which could provide support to the tomato markets. The mature green tomato market usually moves up 8.2 % over the next two weeks. Modestly higher ID potatoes prices are anticipated in the coming months.
