AES is a successful company that develops, builds, and operates electric power plants for customers in United States, England, Northern Ireland, Argentina, and China. What made AES Corporation so interesting was this company runs without specific staff function and specific departments such as human resource, public relation, legal and strategic planning. Also there arent specifically skilled employees to do certain type of job. That was possible because the company encouraged, empowered and improved their employee and put human resource as the company main priority. The company has set of core values and beliefs that all employees follow like integrity, fairness, social responsibility, and fun. There is no certain task that required specific skill. People at AES believe that skills can be learned. The company has really strong learning atmosphere that they no need centralized training. They learn from each other. Each individual is responsible for determining what training and development activities are most appropriate to benefit themselves and the corporation. The company has set of program that help employee to improve their knowledge like tuition reimbursement program. AES isnt a bureaucratic company. The company only has few hierarchical levels that allow good communication and interaction between headquarter and plant. People at plant are involved to discuss important decision like budget issue which is usually other company reluctant to share. Social atmosphere in AES was so positive. The company has strong cultural value of openness and togetherness. They arent just colleague to each other but they have become a family. They held annual picnics for all family and many conferences just to bring all together to get to know each other. The odd but unique way is how they respond to issues and problems in daily operation of the company. There arent any set of rules to cope with certain situation such as absences and maternity leave. They simply use their discretion and good judgment. AES exemplify us that good leadership which concerned about the state of companys human resources, how to improve, maintain and optimize could make the key success of the company.
