Name: Elizabeth Buchanan Class/Subject: 7th grade History Date: March 6, 13 Student Objectives/Student Outcomes: Students will discuss the difficulties of travel during the early 19th century Students will justify their decisions regarding the pros and cons of taking their family on the Oregon Trail using logic and reasoning. Content Standards:

Teachers Goals: After the conclusion of the lesson students will demonstrate knowledge pertaining to westward expansion through the Oregon Trail. Students will be able to defend their reasoning about whether or not to take their families on the Oregon Trail after examining news headlines from the 19th century. Time

Start of Class: Teacher will take attendance Students will present news headlines from that week, if no student has prepared a list, teacher will present several headlines. Introduction of Lesson: Teacher will prepare Prezi presentation and load YouTube clip. Lesson Instruction: Teacher will present Prezi presentation on the Oregon Trail. Ask questions to clarify unfamiliar terms, such as missionary. Teacher will show map of the trail and ask students what some physical obstacles to the pioneers might be? (Looking for rivers, mountains, etc.) Teacher will show YouTube clip (2:00 min) to give students visual representation of the Oregon Trail Teacher will ask what might be some items that they would discard along the journey? After Prezi is over, students will break into pairs to complete the worksheet. Assessments/Checks for Understanding: Once the groups have finished teacher will ask for volunteers to share with the class If no one volunteers teacher will call on several groups Students will have understood the worksheet if they can justify why they are either for taking their family or against Closure/Wrap-Up/Review: Teacher will review the Oregon Trail Self-Assessment: If students completed their worksheet and demonstrated knowledge about the trail and justification for whether or not they would take their family on the journey, then the lesson was a success.
