1a. Do you like reading? Why? 1b. Do you like reading? Why not? 2. What do you usually read? Why? Yes, I do. I think reading for pleasure is a good way of entertainment. No, I dont. I read only the things I have to. In my free time I prefer going out or doing some sport instead. First of all, I have to read a lot for school, such as textbooks and compulsory readings. To tell the truth, sometimes I read just a summary instead of the full text of some novels. In my free time I regularly read some magazines, which are related to my hobbies. I never read newspapers; I listen to the news and the weather forecast on the radio instead. Unfortunately, I dont have much free time for reading for pleasure, but if I do, I usually read fantasy novels. My favourite writer is J.R.R. Tolkien. Though he was born in South Africa in 1892, he was British. A few years later he moved back to the United Kingdom. He fought in the first world war, but not in the second. He was a professor of Linguistics at Oxford University. He translated several Old English writings into modern English and wrote several essays, but hes well-known for his own novels today, mainly for The Lord of the Rings. He died in 1973 at the age of 81. Several of his writings were published after his death under his sons editorship, like The Silmarillion, and The History of Middle-Earth series. His other writings include The Hobbit, The Adventures of Tom Bombadil, Leaf by Niggle, Smith of Wootton Major and Farmer Giles of Ham. My favourite book is The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien. The plot begins with an extraordinary birthday party, where, to everybodys greatest surprise, the celebrated disappears! He does this with the help of his magic ring, which makes its wearer invisible. Actually, he wants to retire to a secret place and leaves all his belongings to his cousin, Frodo. Later it becomes clear that the ring is not an ordinary golden ring, it is the One Ring, which has power over all of the lesser rings and is being looked for by the Enemy himself. Whats more, it cannot simply be kept in secret, as it arises lust in its owner to possess it and makes him use it as the Dark Lord wishes. The only way to avoid catastrophe is to resist the temptation of using it and take it back to the land of the Enemy, where it was forged and throw it into the Great Fire. So Frodo with some companions sets off for this hopeless journey I like this book because Tolkien describes the scenery and the events so well that reading it I often had a feeling as if I had been there and seen, heard or even smelt everything. All of the characters have their own personality with strong points and weaknesses as well. Even their names and way of speaking is characteristic of them. The plot is rich in unexpected turns, so sometimes I simply couldnt put it down and went on reading the next chapter. Though it is a novel, it contains some poems as well, which make it even more enjoyable. I also like its humour.
