From the Secretarys Desk

Dear friends, members of Vidyalaya, and students, Warm greetings for the New Year! This year will be a significant and a memorable year for all of us since we will all be paying our tribute to Swami Vivekananda by way of observing various celebrations in commemoration of his 150th Birth Anniversary celebrations (1863-2013). As you all might know, the occasion is being celebrated with a lot of enthusiasm the world over. It is also an opportune moment, for our youth especially, to realize that Swami Vivekananda fittingly deserves to be our national ideal. For, there is not a great leader who has not drawn inspiration from him. Mahatma Gandhiji said, I have gone through his works very thoroughly, and after having gone through them, the love that I had for my country became a thousand-fold. Jawaharlal Nehru said, Where can you find a man like him? Study what he wrote, and learn from his teachings, for if you do, you will gain immense strength. Take advantage of the fountain of wisdom, of spirit, and of fire that flowed through Vivekananda! Subash Chandra Bose said, Swamiji harmonized the East and the West, religion and science, past and present. Rabindranath Tagore said, If you want to know India, study Vivekananda. And Sri C. Rajagopalachari summed up thus: We therefore owe everything to Swami Vivekananda. May his faith, his courage and his wisdom ever inspire us so that we may keep safe the treasure we have received from him. Our activities this year will therefore be centred on Swami Vivekanandas 150th Birth Anniversary. And as a fitting tribute to him, the Vivekananda Ratham will be flagged off from the Vidyalaya in April 2013. Besides recalling Swami Vivekanandas wandering days in India and especially in Tamil Nadu, the Ratham will spread across his life and message and awaken the spirit of the masses. After touring for around 300 days, the Ratham will be received at Ramakrishna Math, Chennai, in January 2014. A tentative schedule of the Vivekananda Ratha Yatra through the various towns and villages of Tamil Nadu is given in page no. 28 of this newsletter and the final schedule will be uploaded on our website shortly. So, we look forward to your active involvement in the Ratha Yatra celebration, wherever you are. Thanks to the powerful and inspiring ideas of Swami Vivekananda, the Vidyalaya has continued to provide man-making education curricular education integrated with values and discipline to around 7000 students every year, as is evident from the following pages of the newsletter. Here are the highlights of major events that were held during the last six months: D Inauguration of RMVACE (Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya Academy for Competitive Exams) D Launch of Ramakrishna Darshanam, a full-length Tamil Feature Film D Inauguration of the Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya Charitable Dispensary D Signing of an MoU with VE Commercial Vehicles Ltd. for the setting up of a State-of-the-art Automobile Workshop in our Industrial Training Institute D A National-level Workshop on Employer-based Curriculum Designs in Physical Education in Maruthi College of Physical Education D A National-level Conference on Recent Trends in Marketing in our College of Arts and Science D A seminar on Technologies for Yield Maximization of Commercial Crops in our Institute of Agriculture and Rural Development D An orientation programme on Teaching Mental Mathematics to Visually Impaired Children in the Faculty of Disability Management and Special Education, RKMVU D A National Workshop on Career Oriented Curriculum in Physical Education in Faculty of General and Adapted Physical Education and Yoga, RKMVU D A National Workshop in the form of a Follow up Special Board of Studies Meeting for review of the existing syllabi for Physical Education courses in the Faculty of General and Adapted Physical Education and Yoga, RKMVU D Rural Development Work in Sri Bharathi Nagar including educational support to the rural children in T.A.T. Celebrating Swami Vivekanandas 150th Birth Anniversary (1863-2013)

News from abroad on Swami Vivekanandas 150th Birth Anniversary Celebrations

Swami Vivekananda said, My Master used to say: Religion can be given and taken more tangibly, more really than anything else in the world. The second idea that I learnt from my Master, and which is perhaps the most vital, is the wonderful truth that the religions of the world are not contradictory or antagonistic. They are but various phases of one eternal religion. The message of harmony of religions practiced by Sri Ramakrishna and advocated by Swami Vivekananda has today cut across geographical and religious barriers and received universal acceptance. It is therefore no wonder that Swami Vivekanandas 150th Birth Anniversary is being celebrated with a lot of enthusiasm not just in India but the world over. Here are some recent news from abroad about the celebrations. Year-long celebrations in Bangladesh The Inaugural Function of the year-long BangladeshIndia Joint Celebration of the 150th Birth Anniversary of Swami Vivekananda was organized by Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission, Dhaka, Bangladesh, in the main auditorium of Bangladesh National Museum on 12 January 2013. there was a lot of enthusiasm especially from the younger generation. It is now proposed to celebrate the occasion as an annual affair. Reacting on the brewing tension between India and Pakistan, one participant said, Our aim is to spread the message of peace. News from the US (An extract from an article by Philip Goldberg, an Interfaith Minister, Spiritual Coach, Public Speaker, and author of American Veda: How Indian Spirituality Changed the West) Visitors exiting the Art Institute of Chicago on Michigan Avenue are often perplexed by the street sign that reads Swami Vivekananda Way. What is it doing there? Who is this swami, and why does he deserve an honorary street name like Oprah Winfrey, Hugh Hefner and other Chicago legends? Most Americans would not have a clue, but interfaith activists do, and Hindus do, and a great many yoga practitioners and students of Eastern philosophy do, and everyone in India certainly does. And this year, millions more will learn why Vivekananda remains a revered figure more than a century after his passing. January 12th was the 150th anniversary of his birth, and celebrations and tributes will be held all year throughout India and much of the West.

Celebrations in Pakistan

The Indo-Pak tension was no dampener for the Hindus in Pakistan who celebrated the 150th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda with cultural programmes and religious quiz competitions. his own tradition, religious harmony and the universal truths at the unseen depths of all religions. Open-minded, rational, spiritual seekers found his message and his demeanor irresistible. He was a bold and talented figure shattering widespread misconceptions and biases. He became such a superstar that extra talks had to be scheduled for him to accommodate the crowds that flooded the amphitheater in the building that would later become the Art Institute. Hence, the location of Swami Vivekananda Way. In America, Vivekanandas most enduring impact may be the organization he created to perpetuate his work. That 1893 gathering of religious leaders would probably not even be remembered if the token Hindu hadnt ignited such a fervent response. Instead, it launched the modern interfaith movement and catalyzed an East-to-West transmission that has reshaped Americas spiritual landscape. For those reasons and more, you will be hearing about Swami Vivekananda a great deal in the coming year, and so will people 150 years from now.

Vivekananda relevant forever, says Hon. President of India Sri Pranab Mukherjee
(An extract from a press report on a function held at Swami Vivekanandas ancestral house in Kolkata) It is impossible not to feel overwhelmed while sitting in the courtyard of the ancestral house of Swami Vivekananda here (Kolkata). Atop this two-storey building in north city, a century and half ago was born a man whose contributions to humanity are yet to be clearly understood. It is in a room in this house that the reformer defied the social dogmas of those times. It is from this house that the child Naren (Vivekanandas pre-monastic name) one day gifted away to the poor (who gathered under his window sill) all objects of daily use kept in a room. It is in this very courtyard that he played a game of kings with his friends. Born to lead, he was always placed on the throne by his peers, who were his ready subjects. The President, the Governor, the Prasar Bharati CEO and senior monks of the Ramakrishna Order had gathered there to pay homage to him. Mr. Mukherjee said Vivekananda would continue to be relevant as long as civilisation continued. He was relevant then, now and will continue to be relevant. Pointing out that one of his greatest contributions was to transform a society which had lost selfconfidence totally, the President said 1860-70 was a momentous decade for India, with the births of Rabindranath Tagore (1861), Vivekananda (1863) and Mahatma Gandhi (1869). I had a desire to be on this sacred soil. I feel blessed to be able to pay my homage to a great visionary and great humanist, the President said. Swami Smarananandaji, Vice-President, Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission, said the sesquicentennial celebrations should be an occasion for spreading Vivekanandas ideals. We have to see how his ideals on education and the uplift of women can be fulfilled. Swami Prabhanandaji, another Vice-President, said while India had made progress, Vivekanandas ideals had to be followed for tackling the several negative aspects of growth.
