there was a lot of enthusiasm especially from the younger generation. It is now proposed to celebrate the occasion as an annual affair. Reacting on the brewing tension between India and Pakistan, one participant said, Our aim is to spread the message of peace. News from the US (An extract from an article by Philip Goldberg, an Interfaith Minister, Spiritual Coach, Public Speaker, and author of American Veda: How Indian Spirituality Changed the West) Visitors exiting the Art Institute of Chicago on Michigan Avenue are often perplexed by the street sign that reads Swami Vivekananda Way. What is it doing there? Who is this swami, and why does he deserve an honorary street name like Oprah Winfrey, Hugh Hefner and other Chicago legends? Most Americans would not have a clue, but interfaith activists do, and Hindus do, and a great many yoga practitioners and students of Eastern philosophy do, and everyone in India certainly does. And this year, millions more will learn why Vivekananda remains a revered figure more than a century after his passing. January 12th was the 150th anniversary of his birth, and celebrations and tributes will be held all year throughout India and much of the West.
Celebrations in Pakistan
The Indo-Pak tension was no dampener for the Hindus in Pakistan who celebrated the 150th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda with cultural programmes and religious quiz competitions. The President of Pakistan Hindu Seva Welfare Trust The leading disciple of the legendary 19th century said that a function at Radha Krishna temple, Steel saint, Sri Ramakrishna, Vivekananda came to the U.S. Town, about 60km from Karachi, was held to mark in 1893 for the Parliament of the Worlds Religions, the occasion. He also added that there are very few a 17-day festival in the midst of a huge worlds fair Hindus in Pakistan who know about the legendary called the Columbian Exposition. He was an exotic spiritual leader and hence they decided to celebrate sight in his orange robes and turban; very few his birth anniversary to generate awareness. Detailed Americans had even met a Jew or a Muslim at the lectures on the life and teachings of Vivekananda time, much less a Hindu monk. Against all odds, the were delivered and a quiz competition was held. It swami became an instant sensation, not as some was noted that this was first of its kind programme carnival attraction but as a fresh, erudite voice that ever held in Pakistan on Swami Vivekananda and spoke with authority, in impeccable English, about Inauguration of Year-long Celebrations in Bangladesh

That 1893 gathering of religious leaders would probably not even be remembered if the token Hindu hadnt ignited such a fervent response. Instead, it launched the modern interfaith movement and catalyzed an East-to-West transmission that has reshaped Americas spiritual landscape. For those reasons and more, you will be hearing about Swami Vivekananda a great deal in the coming year, and so will people 150 years from now.
Vivekananda relevant forever, says Hon. President of India Sri Pranab Mukherjee
(An extract from a press report on a function held at Swami Vivekanandas ancestral house in Kolkata) It is impossible not to feel overwhelmed while sitting in the courtyard of the ancestral house of Swami Vivekananda here (Kolkata). Atop this two-storey building in north city, a century and half ago was born a man whose contributions to humanity are yet to be clearly understood. It is in a room in this house that the reformer defied the social dogmas of those times. It is from this house that the child Naren (Vivekanandas pre-monastic name) one day gifted away to the poor (who gathered under his window sill) all objects of daily use kept in a room. It is in this very courtyard that he played a game of kings with his friends. Born to lead, he was always placed on the throne by his peers, who were his ready subjects. The President, the Governor, the Prasar Bharati CEO and senior monks of the Ramakrishna Order had gathered there to pay homage to him. Mr. Mukherjee said Vivekananda would continue to be relevant as long as civilisation continued. He was relevant then, now and will continue to be relevant. Pointing out that one of his greatest contributions was to transform a society which had lost selfconfidence totally, the President said 1860-70 was a momentous decade for India, with the births of Rabindranath Tagore (1861), Vivekananda (1863) and Mahatma Gandhi (1869). I had a desire to be on this sacred soil. I feel blessed to be able to pay my homage to a great visionary and great humanist, the President said. Swami Smarananandaji, Vice-President, Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission, said the sesquicentennial celebrations should be an occasion for spreading Vivekanandas ideals. We have to see how his ideals on education and the uplift of women can be fulfilled. Swami Prabhanandaji, another Vice-President, said while India had made progress, Vivekanandas ideals had to be followed for tackling the several negative aspects of growth.
