1. Get on the Internet and research the background of
your interviewer and the company thoroughly before
the interview. See if you can uncover a commonality
between the two of you to help break the ice. This
will also be a great way for the hiring manager to
remember your name.
2. Dress sharply. No jeans, no matter who tells you
otherwise.
3. Arrive promptly (go on a test run the day before to
ensure you know the directions) and accept whatever
drink they offer. A dry mouth may be distracting for
both of you.
4. Think before you answer, and reply slowly, but with
confdence. Your interviewer will be taking notes,
so be sure to annunciate clearly. Giving concise but
complete explanations that fully-answer all questions
is paramount.
5. Be prepared to give a blow-their-mind answer to the
most important question of all: how will you go above
and beyond the job description given for this role?
6. Being nervous is fne. Its even expected. So go with it
and simply start over if you blank out or trail off. Your
interviewer is fully aware whats at stake and how
precious these minutes are to you. A good recruiter
will not penalize you for a few seconds of hesitation or
stammering.
7. Ask away. While its probably not the best idea to
fre off dozens of questions, inquiring about specifc
job duties, your potential offce space, and other key
questions are welcomed. Everyone should have at least
three great questions prepared. Skipping this might be
detrimental to making a lasting impression.
8. Be honest about gaps in employment and terminations.
A good chunk of the working population has been laid
off before, whether it was a voluntary or unexpected
separation. And due to the recession, many of us now
have long stints of unemployment to account for on
our resume. Discussing how you kept your skills fresh
and any volunteer work you performed will show the
interviewer that you made good use of your time.
9. After the interview, leave updated copies of your
resume and a carefully crafted cover letter that
outlines why youre the best candidate for the
job. Remember to plug in professional emails (no
tinydawginthahause@hotmail.com, please) and
sanitize your social networking profles in case this is
included in a background check.
10. Send a handwritten thank-you note. Its a lost
tradition, but still a welcome one.
No matter how much you prepare, odds are youll still
be nervous while youre in the lobby waiting to hear
your name called for the Big Interview. But theres
one thing you can count on: competition will be stiff.
