t was the opening game of the tournament. Mali the hosts played 4-4-2 with variations. The positive aspect was the careful distribution of passes to teammates especially through the wings making a balance between defence and attack. The negative aspect was the failure to consolidate their possession to create scoring chances. Liberia also played 4-4-2. They were quick to the ball and were accurate in ball distribution and positioning but poor in finishing the attacks. Mali played with two stoppers. They made close and sometimes loose marking according to the situation on hand. Liberia marked closely four defenders with the full support of the midfield players retreatimg back to create a well balanced defence and this was spear-headed by George Weah. Keita Seydou played brilliantly for Mali through the right wing position creating open spaces for the strikers to move in. They spread out their game effectively from the midfield to the extremes but their crosses were challenged by the opposing defence. Liberia played more towards the right side of the field . They sometimes attacked through the middle to create spaces for overlapping wingers to either penetrate or swing the ball across. Weah fittingly got the first goal of the African Nations Cup but his Liberian team conceded a goal three minutes from time to draw 1-1. Mali only troubled Liberia on a handful of occasions throughout the game, but came alive late in the game as Liberia tired. The game overall was dour and uninspiring

ali played their normal 4-4-2, looked well prepared mentally and physically. Their system worked well being first to the ball having more possession most of the time. However, they failed to break through the robust defence of their opponent. They controlled the ball well but were unsuccessful upfront. Nigeria also played their usual 4-4-2 but their midfielders took things seriously this time and always supported their defensive line. Seydou Keita & Sidibe Djibril made a good duo for Mali. Nigerias defence was very strong. Their marking and tackling were well calculated and they went hard for each ball. Mali started stronger, urged on by a 50,000 crowd in the new March 26 stadium. Seydou Keita caused Celestine Babayaro a lot of problems, while Toure Bassala hurried the opponents midfield into making mistakes. Nigeria weathered the pressure and started to win the ball in the midfield midway through the half. Julius Aghahowa, was the most dangerous Nigerian player and had the best chance of the first half. In the second half Mali came out firing on all cylinders and created some early chances. Kanu linked well with Aghahowa and Tijani Babangida injected some pace into the Nigerian attack when he came off the bench.

lgeria played 3-5-2 with quick coverage and always at a numerical advantage against the opponents two strikers. Nigeria played 4-2-4 with good balance. However, they sometimes lacked good support of the attack from the defense. Algeria built their attack from the midfield by using mostly short passes and positional changes. The defensive organization was done by the two stoppers and the free player or libero behind. Some of the Nigerian players produced the best work rate though, whereas others failed to come back in time to fill the gaps created by them. Nigeria, looked the more assured and took control of the game early. Striker Julius Aghahowa, Scored the only goal of the game just before halftime when he skipped down the right flank, cut inside three defenders and fired a low shot inside the near post. Saifi upstaged the flashy Nigerians with his own deft flicks and surging runs for a period late in the first half and in the 34th minute his powerful shot flashed past a post. However, after the break Nigeria came out with more confidence.

ew months earlier, the two teams were playing in the same group for the world cup qualifiers of Korea/Japan. Nigeria won the ticket of the group after a tense competition. Liberia was hopping to take their revenge and kick their opponents out of the tournament. In the end, it was Weah who announced hanging his boots off after the Super Eagles faded all his dreams. Liberia played 4-4-2 concentrating more on attack as they had no other choice. They were moving forward all the time and tried to control the pace of the game, pressuring their opponents in the midfield area and using the flanks from the counter attacks. They were not able to deal with the crossing balls inside their box, which helped the Super Eagles to score. They changed positions all the time, confusing the Nigerian defense. Nigeria with their classical 4-4-2 used their experience in controlling Liberias passionate style. Okocha tried to slow down the pace of the game. Kanu dropped a lot in the middle to escape his marker leaving Aghahowa alone in front, which lifted off the pressure from Liberias defense. They were dangerous when they used the flanks. Their defense was alert and balanced.

iberia wanted to win this match after the lost 3 points of the opening game when the hosts scored in the last minutes. But, again bad luck struck Weah and his team mates as Kraouche leveled the score 2/2 from a powerfut shot in the last minute. Liberia the unlucky team will have to play Nigeria in the final phase of the group with only 2 points in hand instead of 6. Algeria played 3-5-2 with a libro marking the opponents strikers tightly. They used long and short passes relying on their skillful Saifi who succeeded in opening up spaces in Liberias defense. They were slow in converting from attack to defense, something which created gaps in their defense. Liberia played 4-2-4 with variations switching to 4-4-2 after leading the game. They were fast with the ball and penetrated through the middle using short passes. They always lose their concentration in the last minutes of the gam.

he hosts won the match, which they could not afford to lose under any circumstances. A defeat or even a draw would have been catastrophic. The pressure of a whole countrys expectations was a heavy burden on Mali players and officials who were convinced that they had no other choice but to book their ticket to the next round. Mali playing 4-1-4-1 with Bagayoko alone in the attack kept the Algerian defenders busy with his stamina and powerful physical shape. Seydou Keita and Tour Bassala who was not marked by the Algerians made all what they wanted with the ball. Mali made good use of the empty spaces and looked sharp in the counter attacks. Algeria were obliged to pull back to face the pressure of the hosts, they always left 3 players in the defense against only one striker from Mali, which made them lose balance in the midfield.

he Bafana Bafana under their Portuguesecoach played a 4-3-3 formation. They kept the ball as long as possible using 5 players in the midfield. They controlled the pace of the match using long and short passes, they attacked by using the width of the field. They created some scoring chances but failed to store. They built their attack from the defense through the midfield but gave the opponents time to reorganize in front of them. They needed to put more players into attack but never had the right judgement when to do so. The balance between their defense and attack was acceptable. Nomvete was a good assist to McCarthy when he participated in the second half. Burkina playing 3-5-2 made good depth in defense and marked the South African forwards strictly putting them always under pressure. Moumouni Dagano looked dangerous and could have caught South Africa 10 minutes before half-time with a quick counter attack. They lacked collective organization and key players who could dictate the rhythm in the midfield. They played a tough game and were at some stages violent towards their opponents.

outh Africa drew 0-0 with Ghana. The South African midfielder Quinton Fortune had an opportunity to score in the 35th minute when South Africa was awarded a penalty, but it was saved by the Ghanaian goalkeeper Sammy Adjei. South Africa played a 4-3-3 system with Zuma always supporting the attack while the Black Stars played a 4-4-2 creation with both Essien and Abdul Razak controlling the midfield area with their notable efforts. Ghana created a good depth in their defensive line but lacked this depth in their front line. South Africa used the flanks through Zuma and Fortune but lacked the support from their defensive and midfield players. Buckley seemed to be the key figure for South Africa but was not able to keep his high technique for the whole 90 mins. Ghana played a zonal defense but were sometimes late in their covering. Deficiency of teamwork & incompatibility between the Bafana Bafana strikers missed out their scoring opportunities.

he Black stars held the Atlas lions to a goalless draw, they played a 4-4-2 system giving more attention to their defensive organization, they played with a sweeper in the second half. There was some good technical and physical displays of skills from both sides, but also a lot of nervousness, something that led to poor finishing and clean net for both sides. Ghana varied short accurate passes with good mobility moving in groups to penetrate their opponents lines, but as these were the aspects of their midfield, they lacked good communication to their attacking players. The Moroccans, with good positioning, used the spaces and the flanks. They controlled the tempo of the game most of the time playing with short passes. They lacked the last touch, as they did not put enough pressure on the Black Stars defenders. Chippo was playing free in the middle. ichem Zerouali delivered the three points for Morocco but after a tough performance from their opponents. The Atlas lions played with their usual 4-4-2 formation, while Burkina Faso showed a lot of courage with their 3-4-3 system. Morocco played with a combination of short and long passes, the players launched attacks from the middle to the two strikers who were able to escape their markers most of the time. The game turned in favour of Burkina, who were led by the excelllent Belgian-based attacker Moumouni Dagano. Six minutes after Moroccos goal, the score was 1-1 with the ball, from a free kick, bouncing off the Moroccan wall and seeing Dagano react the quickest to head home from close range. It was an open game with both teams performing positively and playing more for the attack. Burkina played with fast pace and good team-work between the midfielders and the attackers while bad positioning among their defenders created a lot of gaps in the back line. Burkina found their balance and tempo and deserved a better fate. There were several other chances after that for both sides, before Zerouali clinched the three points with a header from a corner in the 85th minute.

dramatic game especially in the dying minutes as both teams scored 3 goals in the last 3 minutes of the match. Burkina Faso were the better side most of the time, dominating the game, with great support from more than 5 000 of their fans. They played a 3-5-2, dominating the midfield , they were physically well prepared. Isaac Boakye came off the bench to fire Ghana into the Nations Cup quarter-finals with two goals in the dying minutes to defeat Burkina Faso 2-1 in a dramatic finish to their group-deciding encounter . The match had been heading for goalless draw until Burkina Faso's striker Amadou Toure curled a perfect free-kick over Ghana's defence with eight minutes left. That set Burkina on course for a quarter-final place but in the final minute of the game Boakye latched on to a cross in the middle of the penalty area and blasted the ball home. With South Africa beating Morocco, a draw would not have been enough for either team to qualify but in the second minute of injury time Boakye again found himself unmarked in the box and fired a powerful strike into the roof of the net. Until the first goal it had been a poor quality game with neither side looking capable of creating any clear-cut chances, let alone scoring. With seven minutes to go in the first period, Burkina Faso had a flurry of half-chances. First a long-range shot from captain Oumar Barro was well tipped round the post. From the resulting corner, Mady Panandetiguiri turned well in the penalty area but shot wide and then Narcisse Yameogo blasted another long-range strike just wide. In the last minute of the first half, Burkina's Moumoni Beli Dagano should have done better when he headed straight at the goalkeeper from a couple of yards and then substitute Alassane Ouedraogo, who came on for Barro after 39 minutes, headed wide while unmarked. Ghana looked to be better organized. The players moves collectively and did not allow many spaces in their half. 4-4-2 system of the black stars made their mission easier, while, Burkina suffered a lot of gaps in their defensive line and looked to be very tensed during the game due to their outnumbering fans.

World Cup finalist, were held to goalless draws in their first two matches. Italian based Nomvete was the man of the match as he set up South Africa's first two goals before scoring the third himself. The two teams adopted 4-4-2 system with South Africa making good use of the flanks and concentrating in attack which gave their opponents many chances to equalize but their strikers missed all the chances beside the marvelous response by the Bafana goal-keeper Vonk who saved his team in many occasions, But Vonk could do little about Rachid Benmahmoud's penalty after Zuma brought down Adil Ramzi in the penalty area. Nomvete provided the first goal 10 minutes with a dribbling run that saw him cut into the Moroccan defence before crossing for McCarthy to shoot from close range. Zuma scored the second from a good follow and Nomvete secured the third. McCarthy along with Zuma & Nomvete was the dangerous triangle who gave the Moroccans a hard time as they were alert and co-operative. efending champions Cameroon became the first side to go through to the quarter-finals of the African Nations Cup finals thanks to a narrow 1-0 win over Cote dIvoire. The Ivorians controlled the match with their good positioning in the midfield. Cameroons goalkeeper Boukar Alioum kept them in contention before Mboma`s late finish. Alioum made a spectacular one-handed save to deny Ivorian midfielder Aliou Sibi Badra 15 minutes from time. There were variations in the game, effort, inspiration, pleasing tactical moves based on good co-ordenation between the different sectors of each team. The harmony between MBoma and Etoo and good switching of their positions gave the Ivories hard time and created some gaps in their defence. Cote dIvoire created several other opportunities but could not finish. Poor timing from goalkeeper Losseni Konate allowed Mboma a simple close-in header from a corner. Both teams played 3-5-2 with Cameroon showing a great ability in converting from defense to attack and vice versa.

he two neighbors from West Africa Togo and Cote dIvoire drew 0-0 in a match in which the Ivorians had the upper hand most of the time. Cote dIvoire looked to be the better side and were very close to their first 3 points but all their attempts were denied by Togo goalkeeper Kossi Agassa. Agassa, who plays his club football in the Cote dIvoire with Africa Sports, frustrated the 1992 champions, and looked to be quite experienced with the Ivories tricks. Cote dIvoire, with only one locally-based player in their starting line-up, were looking for a good start to erase unhappy memories of their last Nations Cup outing in Ghana and Nigeria. Cote dIvoire started the match with a 3-4-3 creation with an attacking manner, while Togo played the classic 4-42. Cote dIvoire superiority was clearly evident. Bridging all the spaces, using the flanks, pressuring all over the pitch, they were in a very good shape technically and physically but could not make use of the chances they had. Togo played a zonal defense and tried to mark Ivories strikers while using counter attacks especially in the first minutes of the second half. The Elephants then retook control but Agassa kept getting in their way.

emocratic Republic of Congo and Togo produced a 0-0 draw after a poor game from both teams. Both sides looked for their first goal as they played a 3-5-2 system with more concentration in defence. D.R. Congo looked disjointed. The midfielders supported their strikers on some occasions but were not accurate to make use of any of their chances. Togo played a man to man system and counted on the counter attacks with their front line trying through their helpless movements to disrupt the RDC defense but not being able to find one another because they were so far apart. Togo gave Congo some sticky moments later on and German-based defender Bakasu Essele became Congo`s most important player as he always broke up supporting the attack with no marking from RDC players. Both teams lacked inspiration and lucidity. A fruitless result was a fair end for both teams.

he Cote dIvoire were looking for a good start to erase unhappy memories of their last Nations Cup outing in Ghana and Nigeria. But they were held to a goalless draw by their smaller neighbours Togo in thanks largely to a string of saves by Togo goalkeeper Kossi Agassa. Congo RD played 4-4-2 with Musasa Felix playing deep back in-front of the two stoppers which became more effective allowing better coverage between the stoppers and himself. Cote DIvoire played 3-5-4. With that support they were able to threaten the opposing defense. Cote dIvoire played with an attacking fashion but the unnecessary fancy dribbling slowed down the tempo of the game. Cote dIvoire defense was completely shaken by the early attacks from the Congolese and they started losing confidence but some of the players never gave up. Covering was very poor. They attacked mostly from the right flank but their finishing was not accurate to deliver goals. RD Congos players were in a very good condition and this was the result of work of the team as a whole. Their recovery was excellent and this helped the team sustain their rhythm.

he same scenario happened in Ghana/ Nigeria 2000, when Cameroon have had 6 points in hand and facing Togo who were disparate for a win in the last match in the group. Togo came into this match with the same situation of 2 points in hand after they drew with both Cote dIvoire & RD Congo and looked for a winner against Cameroon who were first of the group. But history did not repeat itself and the cup holders reprisal for themselves gave their opponents a hard lesson in football tactics. Despite both playing 4-4-2, there was a great difference in the application of each team. Tremendous speed, collective work, good positioning, variation in attack, pressurizing all over the pitch, controlling the game tempo were the guise of the Cameroon team. They scored most of their goal-scoring chances. It was not Mboma only who was doing the job. Most of his team mates participated in the scoring festival. fter a long struggle with the north Africans in the World cup qualifying group, Senegal had to meet again with Egypt and Tunisia in the African Nations cup. Egypt were the one team Senegal failed to beat in their World Cup qualifying. Senegal struggled to find any composure in the first half with Egypt looking the more stylish side, but the Lions, came back strongly in the second half to snatch a win in a tight clash. Both teams played with a 4-4-2 system, Egyptians playing a zonal defence with good support from the midfield but lacked confidence in the attacking area. Egyptian midfielder Ahmed Hassan made a great effort in linking his teams lines. Emara the left back supported the attack on some occasions. Senegal dropped back too much in the first half but changed tactics in the second and pressured their opponents all over the field, giving them no space. The joint action between Diouf & Camara troubled the Egyptian defence in the second half. Essam El Hadary pulled off a string of fine saves, the best of which was when he reached out to push Diouf`s shot from six metres round the right post. But it was the goalkeeper`s poor punch from a corner that handed Senegal the goal they had been desperately seeking.

The two teams kept up the torrid pace throughout the match but both sides lacked composure in front of the goal. Tunisia played a disciplined tactical game. They were the better side. With an aggressive midfield & great mobility, attacking with quick breaks through the wings and putting pressure on their opponents. Bessam Daassi missed all their scoring chances. Daassi, winning only his second cap, looked to be very slow and hesitating in the goal-mouth. Tunisia looked dangerous also in the set-up plays especially with their defender Radhi moving into attack in the free-kicks but could not translate their control into goals. enegal secured a place in the quarter-finals thanks to a goal in the final minute. But once again Senegal failed to stamp their authority on the match and Zambia often looked the better side. Senegals performance mirrored their opening match against Egypt, which they won with a goal in the 83rd minute, as they failed to take control in the first half and only really came into the game in the second period after throwing players forward. This time they were not able to score until the last minute. Both teams attached to the 4-4-2 system with more individual performance by Senegal faced by a collective work from Zambia who looked the perkier side in both. A closed game in the first half with both teams very cautious turned to an interesting second half. Senegal passed the ball around well but were not successful to make use from any of the cross balls which seemed to be the great weakness of their opponents. Zambia did not use the wings and they based their attack on penetrative passes, which were most of the time intercepted by the Senegal defense. Zambia switched to 3-43 in the last minutes aiming for a winner but forgetting their defensive duties coast them a goal in the dying minutes.

he two World cup qualifiers came into this game with different styles, as Senegal were granted a place in the next round, the north Africans had no other choice but to win and wait for the result of Egypt Vs. Zambia. The two teams applied the 4-4-2 with Senegal playing more defensive considering their safe situation. Tunisia put all what they had into attack with total support from midfielders to the strikers, pressurising their opponents all over the pitch, giving them no space. But their shooting was faulty and they were unable to utilize the chances that came their way. Senegals strikers failed to pierce through and shoot , however they made some good sideways passes. Tunisia created more opening chances mostly along the wings but the finishing touches were badly operated. Their attackers were sharp but could not score due to a lack of concentration. Senegals players looked fit but played reluctently. Tunisias players came into the game to win at all costs since they knew that a draw or a loss was not enough for them to qualify to the next round. mpressive game, the desire to win was notable in the performance of the two sides, All ingredients of football were displayed. There were variations in the game, inspiration, effort, exemplary tactical moves, tactical institution, rapid passing of the ball and good cooperation between the different sectors of each team, good substitution, coaches operating positively and over all a drama that took the breaths of the fans. They were alike with their formation of 4-4-2, the players well prepared physically. Aiming for a place in the semi-final, Senegal never lacked the ambition and played with a lot of eagerness, which at some stages turned to a total act of outrage. Lua Lua was doing the same work that Diouf was doing for Senegal except that Diouf enjoyed the help from Henri Camara and Fadiga, which Lua Lua missed from his team mates. RD Congo were affected by the absence of Nonda. The players control ball control was tremendous. Both teams were not able to control the pace of the game, as they were obliged to play a fast rhythm to catch up with the match. big deception for this Cameroon / Egypt duel. The two teams were supposed to play a quality game after their good performances in the first round considering also the reputation of the two teams . Nothing happened. Not a single positive point to be mentioned, nothing but calculations and more calculations Egypt reinforced its defensive line-up more than in the other matches playing a completely passive game. Playing their ordinary 4-4-2. Their players appeared nailed into the pitch, not capable of taking the least initiative. They could not keep the ball in their possession and they never supported the attack. They seemed as if they wanted to return home and leave the competition. Cameroon playing their 3-5-2 did not look as sharp and dangerous as they used to. They were very cautious more than what the opponents deserved. Their midfielders did not penetrate to make use of the spaces in the Egyptian defense. A terrible percentage of missed passes in a game that appeared to be a friendly match. Mboma scored the only goal from a corner-kick.

outh Africa played 4-1-3-2. They blocked the midfield playing with almost six players in this part of the pitch, which made it very difficult for the opponents to pass through, but they were always in numerical disadvantage in the attack playing with only McCarthy up front. Mali played 4-4-2 but made sure they always had 3 players standing by in defense. The full backs participated in the attacks through the wings. South Africa played with two stoppers and one libro in front of the stoppers making it easier for covering one another and at the same time the front player Tinkler became the receiver and the distributor in the defense. The Malians were more committed in this match and made sure of the 50-50 balls. It seemed like the South African players were not prepared psychologically for this important quarterfinal. They played as if there was going to be a return match in South Africa to determine who would qualify. Mali`s gaol came in the 60th minute by midfielder Bassala Toure weaved his way through defence firing a thunderous shot past goalkeeper Hans Vonk`s outstretched arm. In stoppage time Toure turned provider, slotting a perfectly weighted cross to the far post for substitute Drame Coulibaly to blast the ball into the roof of the net, sealing victory and sparking a national celebration.

igeria played 4-4-2 with several variations. The positive aspect was the careful distribution of passes especially the ones to the the wings making a balance between defense and attack. However, spaces were opened up in their defense line, which gave the opponent good scoring chances when they attacked. Ghana also played 4-4-2 , speeding up the game. They were quick to the ball and were accurate in ball distribution and positioning. They started to defend from the attacking third by the two strikers in front and closing up in the middle. Nigerias midfield played brilliantly on the left and right wings creating spaces for their strikers to move in and they built up up the game from the middle. The Captain, Oliseh, also made great efforts to make the balance between defense and attack. For Ghana, Abdul Razak was the key player keeping the momentum of the game and making a good balance between midfield and attack. Just as the game appeared to be heading for extra time, a superb long-range strike from midfielder Garba Lawal with just 10 minutes left gave the advantage to Nigeria. Nigeria created a host of chances but were kept at bay by valiant defending from their modest opponents, some topclass goalkeeping from Sammy Adjei and their own poor finishing.

fter a tense challenge, Senegal pulled off a dramatic 2-1 win in their semi-final clash against Nigeria and took revenge from the super eagles who kicked them out of the last tournament in Lagos. The Senegalese looked to be more concentrating in the game and played with passion. The Nigerian formation of 44-2 was faced by 5 Senegalese players in the midfield which gave them the upper hand in the constructive zone and a bad day for Okocha gave Fadiga and his mates the chance to control the game. Silly mistakes from both defenses and goalkeepers dedicated the draw for Nigeria and the late winner for Senegal. Salif Diao was the hero for Senegal as he scored the extra time winner after his team had been just five minutes away from victory in normal time. Pape Bouba Diop had given the Senegalese the lead in the 54th minute before Nigeria grabbed an equaliser five minutes from the end of normal time when Julius Aghahowa capitalized on a mix-up in the Senegal defence to slot home the equaliser. Match was full of ups and downs as the Nigerian players were not alert in front of their opponents Goal, missed a lot of chances despite the great effort of their striker Aghahowa. It was a bad-tempered match with three players sent-off.

In the absence of the scorer MBoma, midfielder Salomon Olembe did a great job as he struck twice in six minutes towards the end of the first half. Marc Vivien Foe sealed the rout seven minutes from time. Cameroon adopted their same system of 3-5-2. Olembe's two-goal stunned the crowd and inexperienced Mali players. Olembe's first goal came on 39 minutes, a gift from Striker Pius Ndiefi who was the man of the match and big surprise by Cameroon who came from the bench as a substitute for the injured MBoma. Olembe and Ndiefi combined again to deliver a first class second goal. One of the best tactical goals in the Tournament. Foe ended the show with the third in the late minutes. The scoreline might have been worse for Mali if Etoo and Lauren made use of their chances before Foe end the drama with a third goal in the dying minutes. It was obvious that the experienced Cameron side knew how to control the pace of the game and cool down the Mali players infront of their fans. Song and his teammates dominated the match in all tranquillity. NDiiefi speed gave stride to his team and was able to use the gap in the left side in Mali defence. Malis 4-4-2 system did not allow them to challenge the cup holders. Cameroon players did not give them any space to move or time to think. It was the final chapter for the hosts adventure but the future looks bright for the Mali youngsters.

Nigeria lining up a second team while Mali playing with full power. Both teams played a 4-4-2 system. Nigeria dominated the midfield with varieties of long and short passes and good support from the defense. They switched to 4-3-3 when the ball was in their possession and used the flanks. Babangida and Ikpeba made many crosses into Malis box creating many dangerous chances from which Ayegbeni was able to snatch a goal. The captain Oliseh was impressive, Playing as a libero buiding the attack from the midfield when they were in control. Mali concentrated on Seydou Keita who was not able to deliver his effective passes as he was well marked by the Nigerian defense.
