Questionnaire Results

1. What gender are you? 71% of my correspondents were female and 29% were male. This shows more females took part in my survey than male. This was a result from handing more questionnaires to females than males. An equal number couldve been handed to boys as well as females because my video product is aimed at both genders as the R&B genre appeals to both. 2. How old are you? 82% of my correspondents were aged between 16 18 years old. This shows that the audience so far that the audience Im targeting is the ideal youth audience that I wanted to target, therefore my product needs to relate to their interests and lifestyle.

3. What is your occupation? Majority of my correspondents that took part in my survey were students, leaving 17% of the remaining that have answered to be employees and already working mainly part time. This shows that the 17%, who work, earn their own money therefore theyre able to buy my product without having to rely on their pocket or parents money. Students will still be part of my target audience because the genre is suitable to them and its what they want to listen.

4. Do you listen to music? Everyone who took my survey listens to music. This therefore makes my answers relevant to my findings and product.

5. If yes, how often? 88% of the people, who answered, are frequent listeners of music therefore it makes my product within the target audience.

6. What is your favourite music genre? 53% of the correspondents favourite music genre was R&B and Pop music. This shows that these two genres are the most popular amongst the people who were surveyed. Relating these finding to my music genre, it places my product at advantage as my product is R&B/Soul which mostly people opted for. Closely, 48% opted for Acoustic as their favourite genre. The three less popular ones were Classic, Jazz and Blues as these may appeal to an older, mature audience.

7. Who are your favourite artist(s) and/or band(s)? Below are some artists that my correspondents chose as their favourite. Overall, the majority of these artists fall in the Pop and Rock category of music genres. Relative to my product the results do not support my genre.

8. What technology do you own? Everyone that answered my survey owns a technology item such as laptop and a mobile phone. This supports my product production as it shows they have internet access therefore easy to surf and share my music online. Also, majority owns an audio device such as iPod or MP3 Player. This shows that they could listen on the go my music and easily carry it with them.

9. How do you get in touch with your friends? 100% of answers revealed that communicating with their friends through phone and networking sites such as Facebook are the most popular options for people. Facebook is an excellent way of advertisement and distribution of my product as everyone can interact and share my product on the site and is more likely to be spread across. Only 58% communicate with their friends face to face. This could be a great way of advertisement of my product as it will allow them to find out more. This could encourage me using social networking sites to promote my product such as Facebook and Twitter, which would increase the distribution of my product to a widespread audience.

10. How do you hear about the latest music? Majority of the correspondents hear about the latest music on TV which can be advertised on music channels, TV radio, films or entertainment news. Follow by that, 52% hear about the latest music online. This could be done by networking sites and on YouTube where people constantly share music so everyone can have access to it. Others, such as discos and clubs tend to play a new song if it fits the clubs theme or night. Perhaps, be used in adverts, for example John Lewis advert Power of Love, had a great success and is No 24 in iTunes chart. It has gained a lot of hearings from spectators.

11. Where do you listen to music? 75% answered they listen to music mainly on YouTube. This is because YouTube is able to broadcast anything and everything which can influence people in finding about new music, artists, etc. My video being broadcasted on YouTube means it will be viewed by millions of YouTube users. This will raise views and popularity to my video.

12. Which TV channels do you listen music on? Viva and MTV were highly chosen by the correspondents. Both these channels are aimed at an adolescence audience group, which then will show music and programmes which are aimed at their interests and hobbies. These also tend to play music more mainstream music, such as R&B rather than Channel AKA that plays more Grime and Ska music genres.

13. How would you describe your fashion style? Do you associate your style with any culture or subculture? Majority of correspondents said that they dont associate their style with any culture or subculture, however they dress mainstream and whatever suits them. Linking to my video, I chose my actors/actresses to dress contemporary and casual so it fits in with the modern R&B music and style; this is so my target audience can identify with the genre. In my video young people will be represented as fun, romantic and social, influencing costume being classified as cool, quite trendy and contemporary.

14. What do you do for hobbies? My survey correspondents showed to be interested in creative, outgoing and selfexpressive activities which show that these rely on sense of belongingness from their peer group through the activities theyre involved in. This links to Maslows Hierarchy of Needs. Links between my music video are Im including a feel of socialization with friends as they meet up in the caf showing aspects of belongingness and the element of the romance theme within the narrative, when both protagonists play basketball at night and become close to one another, showing love seeking.

15. When do you listen to music? My correspondents said listening to music both with friends but also on their own is better. This again shows great sense of ways to socialize with friends through having the same interests and likes. Linking to Maslows Hierarchy of Needs, theyd feel belongingness in the group but also like their own space. This will be shown in my video when the girl is in her room at the start of the video, reflecting and all of a sudden her phones beeps.

16. What attracts you the most in an album front cover? From my findings, majority of people answered they interested in creativity, uniqueness, bold fonts and images of the artist(s) and a good layout when looking at a digipak. Linking to my digipak design and product, this encourages me to create something quite different, creative and well composed as well as relating it to my music genre. Things such as urban art, street photos, collages and bold fun colours could be applied to target my audience. In my video this will be shown by the use of location which represents the modern, contemporary location. By doing this it will represent young people as fun, outgoing and sociable. 17. What magazines do you read? 71% of my correspondents answered they dont read any magazines, however 29% read magazines such as OK magazine, Heat, Glamour. Relating this to my product of a magazine cover, Id have to include content that would appeal to an adolescent/young adult audience such as beauty and lifestyle which could attract them.

18. What is your favourite type of music video? 53% answered they prefer a mixture of all types within the video. 0% prefers performance music video by itself. Relating it to my music video, I chose to do a narrative music video because according to the narrative term, a narrative is the organisation given to a series of facts. Therefore this is shown in my video through the structure of a beginning, middle and end, which the human mind seeks and uses to make sense of things. Relating this structure to my video, the audience is able to connect events and make interpretations from these in order to make sense to them. From this statement, Im also going to apply Todorovs theory of narrative, the theory of equilibrium and disequilibrium. This is going to be shown at the beginning of the narrative, where the girl is in a normal equilibrium, however an event occurs which disrupts her initial equilibrium. She recognises and attempts to repair the disruption and returns to a new equilibrium. This will transform the characters and situations throughout the narrative, as Todorov argues it is its progress.
