2 SOLAR Photovoltaic GUIDE

Redland is a brand of the worldwide Monier Group. With operations in 46 countries and over 200 production sites, Monier is the leading worldwide supplier of pitched roofing materials. Operating in the UK, our goal is to deliver high-quality roofing solutions that perfectly meet our customers expectations.
Harnessing solar energy is one of the most attractive and sustainable means of generating zero carbon, renewable energy for use in buildings. A pitched roof is the ideal surface for solar energy collection for heat and electricity generation. Why Redland?
Redlands renewables pre-eminence within the UK roofing industry, draws on the expertise and experience gathered from more than 90 years as an industry leader. In this time, we have developed many innovative solutions, including the first UK roof-integrated photovoltaic (PV) systems launched in 1997. In 2008, we added Solar Thermal (ST) to our renewables portfolio. Our range of tiles, slates, renewable energy systems, fittings and accessories, combined with market-leading technical support services, enable us to deliver total pitched roofing solutions you can rely on.

Solar PV Tile for slate, plain and profile appearance roofs

Our second generation of PV Tiles encompasses five new roof tile specific PV Tiles each developed to match one of our most popular tile ranges used by house builders. Each PV Tile has been designed for performance, ease of installation and good looks and offers significant benefits in all three areas over above the roof panel systems, where poor installation can compromise the roof structure. With a 25 year Power Output Guarantee from our PV tile manufacturer, Redland Solar PV Tile is MCS certified and eligible for use on Feed-in Tariffs Schemes. It is also covered by Redlands 15 year roof system guarantee which assures the durability and weathertightness of the whole roof.

PV SYSTEMS WORKING PRINCIPLES

Photovoltaic panels convert daylight into DC (direct current). An inverter turns this DC into the domestically usable 230V 50Hz AC. The installation is connected to the National Grid. As soon as the system starts supplying power, this power will be used in the home first. Any surplus electricity is exported to the National Grid and any shortages are made up from the grid network.

Optimum Performance A pitched roof with a slope of between 20 and 50 is the optimum site for a solar PV system. Installing PV tiles on a south-facing roof will give the best result, but it is also possible to use a roof orientated between east and west. The PV Tiles should not be shaded by high buildings or trees, as this will reduce their efficiency.

CODE FOR SUSTAINABLE HOMES, FEED-IN TARIFFS & GUARANTEES

In late 2008 the UK Government passed the Climate Change Act which, for the first time, has placed a legal obligation on the UK Government to cut its carbon dioxide emissions by 80% by 2050. The UK Government has also signed up to the EU Renewable Energy Directive, which includes a UK target of 15% of energy from renewables by 2020.
To meet these targets the UK Government has introduced a range of new standards and financial incentives targeted at the buildings sector, currently responsible for 50% of all UK carbon emissions. Whether you are a homeowner or a national housebuilder you can be part of the transformation of the UK national grid from one dependent on fossil fuels to one based on cleaner, renewable alternatives such as solar power. Code for Sustainable Homes The Code is the national standard for the sustainable design and construction of new homes. Its aim is to reduce our carbon emissions and create homes that are more sustainable. The Code uses a one to six Code Level rating system to communicate the overall sustainability performance of a new home, and sets minimum standards for energy use at each level. Renewable energy systems, such as Redland Solar PV, significantly count towards the Sustainable Homes point score. From Code Level 3 upwards their use is increasingly important and Code Level 6 can only be achieved using an on-site means of generating renewable electricity for the home. Redland Solar PV can meet these demands. Feed-in Tariffs (FIT) Introduced in April 2010, the GB Feed-in Tariffs reward those who generate their own low carbon electricity. PV microgenerators benefit from a fixed rate payment for each unit of electricity generated (kWh), called FIT Generation Tariff. In addition, PV microgenerators can use the energy they generate for free and sell the energy they dont use to their electricity supplier, for a minimum guaranteed rate called FIT Export Tariff. The Generation and Export Tariffs are both guaranteed for 25 years from the date the system is first registered. Generation and export tariffs are linked to the Retail Price Index (RPI) and FITs income for domestic properties generating electricity mainly for their own use are not liable for income tax. From April 2012, FITs will be subject to an annual degression rate of 7%. See the FAQ section on page 14 for more details on FITs. Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) To qualify for a Feed-in Tariff, both the PV system used and the installer must be MCS certified. Redland Solar PV Tiles are MCS certified.

MCS BBA 0019

Anticipating future requirements in industry certification, Redland Solar PV Tiles have also successfully undergone rigorous performance testing for dynamic wind loading, deluge and driving rain exposure, and resistance to external fire. Guarantees Redland Solar PV Tiles are covered by the Redland 15 Year Roof System Guarantee and a Power Output Guarantee from the PV tile manufacturer guaranteeing at least 90% performance for the first 10 years from date of commissioning and at least 80% performance for the following 15 years. These guarantees combine to give the most comprehensive Solar PV guarantee you will find on the market. Like all products from the Redland range, our Solar PV Tiles have been tested under storm and driving rain conditions at our unique wind tunnel facility and are designed to meet the same wind uplift performance as the surrounding roof when correctly fixed.

PACK SIZES & EXAMPLES

The tables below show examples of PV packs available for each of the five Redland PV Tile types, the number of PV modules per pack, PV area (m2) and the system output (kWh). They also show the expected annual financial savings, based on the 1/4/2010 - 31/03/2012 FIT Value for retrofit PV systems, along with CO2 savings based on DEFRA recommended values. These calculations are based on 50% of the electricity generated being used on-site, with the remaining 50% being fed back into the electricity grid, and are for a south facing system, on a 30 degree pitched roof, with little or no shading. For comparison purposes, the average electricity energy requirement of a four person household is 3,300 kWh a year. This value excludes the energy required for hot water and space heating.

FAQs
Is Redland Solar PV limited to flat tiles? No, Redland PV Tiles are available to match three Redland slates: Cambrian Slate, Mini Stonewold, MockBond Mini Stonewold, one Redland plain tile appearance tile, DuoPlain and four Redland profile tiles: Landmark Double Pantile, Landmark Double Roman, Grovebury and 50 Double Roman. Do we require planning permission? Planning permission is not normally required. However, exceptions may apply for systems on listed buildings or in areas of outstanding natural beauty. In all cases it is best to check with your local council Planning Department. What are Feed-in Tariffs (FIT)? Introduced in April 2010, the Feed-in Tariff is a governmentbacked scheme to encourage the uptake of small scale lowcarbon energy generation. Linked to RPI, FIT levels have been set to provide an expected nominal rate of return of 8-10%. How will I get paid under FIT? You will get paid by your energy provider for every kWh of energy produced, whether it is used in your house or exported to the National Grid. PV systems are recognised as one of the prime means of generation and there is a commitment to maintain the initial FIT levels until March 2012, with ongoing tariff payments payable for 25 years. The rate is set at the time the installation is first registered and linked to RPI. From April 2012, FIT rates for new installations will be degressed by approximately 7% each year. FIT Payment Rate Table with Year 1 &2
Installations registered in FIT Year 1 (1.04.10 - 31.03.11) PV System Size 4 kW new build 4 kW retrofit >4-10 kW >10-100 kW >100kW-5MW Tariff received until 31.03.11 Tariff received between 1.04.11 - 31.03.12* 37.8 43.3 37.8 32.9 30.7 Installations registered in FIT Year 2 (1.04.11 - 31.03.12) Tariff received until 31.03.12*

Are FIT payments taxable? FITs income for domestic properties generating electricity mainly for their own use will not be taxed as taxable income. Owners of FITs installations will also be able to assign their rights to FITs payments to others, for example when they sell their property. Are there any guarantees? Unlike many rival systems Redland Solar PV tiles are supplied with the roof tiles which surround them and because the whole roof system has been tested its integrity is covered by the Redland 15 year Roof System Guarantee. This combined with the Solar PV Power Output Guarantee from the PV tile manufacturer for 25 years from the date of commissioning (at least 90% performance for the first 10 years and at least 80% performance for the next 15 years) offers the most comprehensive Solar PV guarantee you will find on the market.
