INTRODUCTION

Authentic Traditions of the Holy Prophet Hadhrat Muhammad Rasulullah Sallallahu

'Alaihi Wasallam, May Peace And Blessing Be Upon Him, is one of the two main

sources to understand the religion of Islam. It is regarded as the second most

important reference after The Glorious Al-Quran The Book Of Allah. Traditions of

The Holy Prophet, May Peace And Blessing Be Upon Him also known as Hadits and

Sunnah in the Islamic Sciences.

When a person becomes a Muslim, he or she must believe and understand that there is

no God except Allah and Muhammad as His messenger. Believe in Allah means that

we keep the faith in our heart that Allah is the only one God available in the entire

universe and He is the one that taking care of all the universes. Allah is the one who

creates the heavens and the earth including all the planets which are known to us and

those which are not known. Allah is the one who creates the stars and the sun. He also

creates the moon and the orbit of the moon, the earth and its orbit, the planets and its

orbit, the sun and its orbit and so on.

One more thing which most people did not realize is that they are also the creations of

Allah known as Insan, the human being. Human beings are the most sophisticated

creations that Allah creates. There are too many miracles in the human beings mind,

body and soul which are so complex and complicate to understand. Human cannot

create a single human even a part of a human body because they are not the creator.

The ultimate creator is Allah the only God in this entire universe.

Allah is the name of a compulsory being essence that have all the best and complete

quality of supremacy and clean from all the bad and incomplete quality. He is the one
who creates life and death, grace and disgrace, sickness and healthiness, man and

women, day and night, seas, mountains, birds, animals, insects, trees and all the living

things.

The best creation among the creations is the human being and the best human beings

are the Phophets. There are twenty five well known Phophets which are mentioned in

The Holy Al-Quran. The best Prophet among the Phophets is the Last Prophet

Hadhrat Muhammad Rasulullah Sallallahu 'Alaihi Wasallam, May Peace And

Blessing Be Upon Him whom Allah bestows The Holy Al-Quran. What we can easily

understand from this statement is that The Holy Prophet Muhammad Rasulullah

Sallallahu 'Alaihi Wasallam, May Peace And Blessing Be Upon Him is the best

among all Allah's creations.

The Holy Prophet Muhammad Rasulullah Sallallahu 'Alaihi Wasallam, May Peace

And Blessing Be Upon Him is the last Prophet and the best. He was the greatest

among the greatest creations. He is Muhammad The Praiseworthy and also known as

Ahmad The Most Praiseworthy. There are hundreds of names which are attributed to

him. The best person always deliver the best speeches and the Traditions are the

speeches of The Holy Prophet Muhammad Rasulullah Sallallahu 'Alaihi Wasallam,

May Peace And Blessing Be Upon Him. Tradition also means the actions taken by

The Holy Prophet Muhammad Rasulullah Sallallahu 'Alaihi Wasallam, May Peace

And Blessing Be Upon Him that are recorded by his companions known as Sahabah

and they memorise it. There are millions of Tradition of The Holy Prophet

Muhammad Rasulullah Sallallahu 'Alaihi Wasallam, May Peace And Blessing Be

Upon Him and it has been graded upon its authenticity. The most authentic Traditions

is called Sahih and it can be taken as proof and guiding sources to be act upon it.
A Tradition of The Holy Prophet Muhammad Rasulullah Sallallahu 'Alaihi Wasallam,

May Allah's Peace and Blessing Be Upon Him is composed of two parts. The first

part is the chain of reporters which is known as the Isnad and the second part is the

text which is known as the Matan. In classifiying a Tradition, the text may seem to be

reasonable and logical to the general public but it needs to be authenticated by reliable

scholars of Traditions such as Imam Bukhari and Imam Muslim Rahmatullah

'Alaihima, May Allah's Blessing Be Upon Them. They have compiled thousands of

Traditions of The Holy Prophet Muhammad Rasulullah Sallallahu 'Alaihi Wasallam,

May Allah's Peace And Blessing Be Upon Him and present it to the public in their

most guiding book which is known as Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim. They studied

the Traditions and the chain of reporters from the companions of The Holy Prophet

Muhammad Rasulullah Sallallahu 'Alaihi Wasallam, May Allah's Peace And Blessing

Be Upon Him, who narrates it.

From the period of The Holy Prophet Hadhrat Muhammad Rasulullah Sallallahu

'Alaihi Wasallam, May Allah's Peace And Blessing Be Upon Him to the period of

Hadhrat Imam Bukhari Rahmatullah 'Alaih, there are many reporters of Traditions

and it is difficult to differentiate whether it is genuine and authentic or not unless

someone learns the Traditions from a reliable source. Hadhrat Imam Bukhari

Rahmatullah 'Alaih has studied a new branch of knowledge in studying the Traditions

by investigating it through the chain of reporter's biography and their actual deeds.

From there, he classifies the Traditions and graded it according to their status.

The most illustrious teachers of Hadhrat Imam Bukhari Rahmatullah 'Alaih is

Hadhrat Imam 'Abdullah Ibnul Mubarak Rahmatullah 'Alaih (died 181 Hijrah), once

said, "The Isnad is part of the religion, had it not been for the Isnad, whoever wished

to would have said whatever he liked."

After the deaths of The Holy Prophet Muhammad Rasulullah Sallallahu 'Alaihi

Wasallam, May Allah's Peace And Blessing Be Upon Him, his Companions convey

the Traditions to their successors which are known as the Tabi'in and after the death

of the Companions, the Tabi'in conveys the Traditions to their successors which are

known as Tabi' Tabi'in and the chain goes on until the time of Hadhrat Imam Bukhari

Rahmatullah 'Alaih. The missing link in reporting the Traditions need verifications of

the Isnad. Hadhrat Imam Malik Rahmatullah 'Alaih (died 179 Hijrah) said, "The first

person to utilise the Isnad was Ibnu Shihab Az-Zuhri (died 124 Hijrah).

Another reason for verifying the Traditions was taken because there are various sects

amongst the Islamic community who claim certain words, speeches or actions as the

Traditions of The Holy Prophet Muhammad Rasulullah Sallallahu 'Alaihi Wasallam,

May Allah's Peace And Blessing Be Upon Him. Hadhrat Imam Ibnu Sirin

Rahmatullah 'Alaih, May Allah's Blessing Be Upon Him said, "They would not ask

about the Isnad, but when the turmoil happened, they said: "Name to us your men."

So the narrations of the adherents to the Sunnah would be accepted while those of the

adherents of innovation would not be accepted."

In narrating a Tradition, many reporters were involved in the Isnad and this situation

demanded strict discipline before a Tradition can be accepted. The regulations in this

discipline are known as the classification of Traditions or Mustalah Al-Hadits. There

are many books written by the Traditionist scholars regarding the classification of

Hadits in accordance with their status such as Ar-Risalah by Imam Ash-Syafi'i

Rahmatullah 'Alaih (died 204 Hijrah), Muqaddimah Sahih Muslim by Imam Muslim

Rahmatullah 'Alaih (died 261 Hijrah), Jami' At-Tirmidzi by Imam At-Tirmidzi

Rahmatullah 'Alaih (died 279 Hijrah), Ma'rifah 'Ulum Al-Hadits by Al-Hakim

Tirmidzi Rahmatullah 'Alaih (died 405 Hijrah), Al-Kifayah Fi 'Ilm Ar-Riwayah by

Al-Khatib Al-Baghdadi Rahmatullah 'Alaih (died 463 Hijrah), 'Ulum Al-Hadits by

Ibnu Salah Rahmatullah 'Alaih (died 643 Hijrah), Muqaddimah Al-Irshad by Imam

Nawawi Rahmatullah 'Alaih (died 676 Hijrah), Tadrib Ar-Rawi by Imam Jalalludin

As-Suyuti Rahmatullah 'Alaih (died 911 Hijrah) and numerous others.

The broad classifications of the Traditions can be seen as below:

1. According to the reference to a particular authority, e.g. the Holy Prophet

Muhammad Rasulullah Sallallahu 'Alaihi Wasallam, May Allah's Peace And Blessing

Be Upon Him, a Companion, or a Successor, such Traditions are called Qudsi (divine)

Marfu' (elevated), Mauquf (stopped) and Maqtu' (severed) respectively.

2. According to the links in the Isnad, i.e. whether the chain of reporters is interrupted

or uninterrupted, e.g. Musnad (supported), Muttasil (continuous), Munqati' (broken),

Mu'allaq (hanging), Mu'dal (perplexing) and Mursal (hurried).

3. According to the number of reporters involved in each stage of the Isnad, e.g.

Mutawatir (consecutive) and Ahad (isolated), the latter being divided into Gharib

(scarce, strange), 'Aziz (rare, strong), and Mashhur (famous).

4. According to the manner in which the Hadits has been reported, such as using the

Arabic words: 'An ("On the authority of"), Haddatsana ("He narrated to us"),

Akhbarana ("He informed us") or Sami'tu ("I heard"). In this category falls the

discussion about Mudallas (concealed) and Musalsal (uniformly-linked) Traditions.

5. According to the nature of the Matan and Isnad, e.g. an addition by a reliable

reporter, known as Ziyadatu Tsiqah, or opposition by a lesser authority to a more

reliable one, known as Shadhz (irregular). In some cases, a text containing a vulgar

expression, unreasonable remark or obviously-erroneous statement is rejected by the

Traditionists outright without consideration of the Isnad, such a Hadits is known as

Munkar (denounced). If an expression or statement is proved to be an addition by a

reporter to the text, it is declared as Mudraj (interpolated).

6. According to a hidden defect found in the Isnad or text of a Hadits. Although this

could be included in some of the previous categories, a Hadits Mu'allal (defective

Tradition) is worthy to be explained separately. The defect can be caused in many

ways, e.g. two types of Hadits Mu'allal are known as Maqlub (overturned) and

Mudtarib (shaky).

7. According to the reliability and memory of the reporters; the final judgment on a

Hadits depends crucially on this factor, verdicts such as Sahih (sound), Hassan

(good), Dha'if (weak) and Maudhu' (fabricated, forged) rest mainly upon the nature of

the reporters in the Isnad.

to be acceptable, "Each reporter should be trustworthy in his religion, he should be

verbatim, not only its meaning."

2. Hassan – Good

lies, excessive mistakes, opposition to the narration of more reliable sources,

involvement in innovation or ambiguity surrounding his person.

4. Maudhu' – Fabricated, Forged

A Tradition whose text goes against the established norms of the Holy Prophet

Muhammad Rasulullah Sallallahu 'Alaihi Wasallam's sayings or its reporters include a

remembers Me in a group of people, I remember him in a group that is better

than they, and if he comes one span nearer to Me, I go one cubit nearer to him;

they will go to Adam and say, “O Adam! Don't you see the people's condition?

Allah created you with His Own Hands and ordered His angels to

prostrate before you, and taught you the names of all the things. Please intercede for

us with our Lord so that He may relieve us from this place of ours.” Adam will say, “I

am not fit for this undertaking”, and mention to them the mistakes he had committed,

and add, "But you’d better go to Noah as he was the first Apostle sent by Allah to the

people of the Earth.” They will go to Noah who will reply, “I am not fit for this

undertaking,” and mention the mistake which he made and add, “But you’d better go

to Abraham, Khalil Ar-Rahman.”

They will go to Abraham who will reply, “I am not fit for this undertaking,” and

mention to them the mistakes he made, and add, “But you’d better go to Moses, a

slave whom Allah gave the Torah and to whom He spoke directly”. They will go to

Moses who will reply, “I am not fit for this undertaking,” and mention to them the

mistakes he made, and add, “You’d better go to Jesus, Allah’s slave and His Apostle

and His Word (Be: And it was) and a soul created by Him.” They will go to Jesus who

will say, “I am not fit for this undertaking, but you’d better go to Muhammad whose

sins of the past and the future had been forgiven by Allah.” So they will come to me

and I will ask the permission of my Lord, and I will be permitted to present myself
before Him. When I see my Lord, I will fall down in prostration before Him and He

will leave me in prostration as long as He wishes, and then it will be said to me, “O

Muhammad! Raise your head and speak, for you will be listened to; and ask, for you

will be granted your request; and intercede, for your intercession will be accepted.” I

will then raise my head and praise my Lord with certain praises which He has taught

me, and then I will intercede. Allah will allow me to intercede for a certain kind of

people and will fix a limit whom I will admit into Paradise.

listened to; and ask, for you will be granted your request; and intercede, for your

He has taught me, and then I will intercede. Allah will allow me to intercede for a

certain kind of people and will fix a limit to whom I will admit into Paradise, I will

return again, and when I see my Lord, I will fall down in prostration and He will

leave me in prostration as long as He wishes, and then He will say, “O Muhammad!

Raise your head and speak, for you will be listened to, and ask, for you will be

granted your request; and intercede, for your intercession will be accepted.”

I will then praise my Lord with certain praises which He has taught me, and then I

will intercede. Allah will allow me to intercede for a certain kind of people and will

fix a limit to whom I will admit into Paradise.I will come back and say, “O my Lord!

None remains in Hell Fire but those whom Quran has imprisoned therein and for

whom eternity in Hell Fire has become inevitable.”

The Prophet added, “There will come out of Hell Fire everyone who says: “La

Ilaha Illa Allah,” and has in his heart good equal to the weight of a barley grain.

Then there will come out of Hell Fire everyone who says: “La Ilaha Illa Allah,”

and has in his heart good equal to the weight of a wheat grain. Then there will come

out of Hell Fire everyone who says: “La Ilaha Illa Allah,” and has in his heart

good equal to the weight of an atom or a smallest ant.”

he was born.”

The companions of the Prophet said, “O Allah's Apostle! Should we not inform the

people of that?” He said, “There are one-hundred degrees in Paradise which Allah has

prepared for those who carry on Jihad in His Cause. The distance between every two

degrees is like the distance between the sky and the Earth, so if you ask Allah for

anything, ask Him for the Firdaus, for it is the last part of Paradise and the highest part

of Paradise, and at its top there is the Throne of Beneficent, and from it gush forth the

rivers of Paradise.”
TRADITION 13

The Prophet used to say at the time of difficulty,

“La Ilaha Illa Allahul ‘Alimul Halim, La Ilaha Illa Allahu Rabbul ‘Arshil

‘Azim, La Ilaha Illa Allahu Rabbus Samawati Wa Rabbul Ardhi Rabbul ‘Arshil

Karim.”

There is no god but Allah The Lord of the Greatness Throne,

There is no god but Allah The Lord of the heavens and The Lord of the earth,

The Lord of the Honorable Throne."

TRADITION 14

moon and said, “You people will see your Lord as you see this full moon, and you

will have no trouble in seeing Him, so if you can avoid missing (through sleep or

business, etc.) a prayer before sunrise (Fajar) and a prayer before sunset (‘Asar) you

must do so.”
TRADITION 17

Narrated Ibnu ‘Abbas Radhiyallahu ‘Anhuma:

Whenever the Prophet offered his Tahajjud prayer, he would say,

“Allahumma Rabbana Lakal Hamd, Anta Qayyimus Samawati Wal Ardh Wa

Man Fihinna, Antal Haqqu Wa Qaulukal Haqqu Wa Wa’dukal Haqqu Wa

Liqa-Ukal Haqqu Wal Jannatu Haqqun Wannaru Haqqun Wassa’atu Haqqun,

Allahumma Laka Aslamtu Wa Bika Amantu Wa ‘Alaika Tawakkaltu Wa Ilaika

Khasamtu Wa Bika Hakamtu, Faghfir Li Ma Qaddamtu Wa Ma Akhkhartu Wa

Asrartu Wa A’lantu Wa Ma Anta A’lamu Bihi Minni, La Ilaha Illa Anta.”

“O Allah, our Lord! All the praises are for You; You are the Keeper (Establisher or

the One Who looks after) of the Heavens and the Earth. All the Praises are for You;

You are the Light of the Heavens and the Earth and whatever is therein. You are the

Truth, and Your saying is the Truth, and Your promise is the Truth, and the meeting

with You is the Truth, and Paradise is the Truth, and the (Hell) Fire is the Truth. O

Allah! I surrender myself to You, and believe in You, and I put my trust in You

(solely depend upon). And to You I complain of my opponents and with Your

Evidence I argue. So please forgive the sins which I have done in the past or I will do

in the future, and also those (sins) which I did in secret or in public, and that which

You know better than I. None has the right to be worshipped but You.”
TRADITION 18

Narrated 'Adiy bin Hatim Radhiyallahu ‘Anhuma:

Allah's Apostle said, "There will be none among you but his Lord will speak to him,

and there will be no interpreter between them nor a screen to screen Him."
TRADITION 19

Narrated ‘Abdullah bin Mas'ud Radhiyallahu ‘Anhuma:

Allah's Apostle the true and truly inspired, narrated to us, “The creation of everyone

of you starts with the process of collecting the material for his body within forty days

and forty nights in the womb of his mother. Then he becomes a clot of thick blood for

a similar period (40 days) and then he becomes like a piece of flesh for a similar

period. Then an angel is sent to him by Allah and the angel is allowed (ordered) to

write four things; his livelihood, his date of death, his deeds, and whether he will be

a wretched one or a blessed one in the Hereafter and then the soul is breathed into

him. So one of you may do good deeds characteristic of the people of Paradise so

much that there is nothing except a cubit between him and Paradise but then what has

been written for him decides his behavior and he starts doing evil deeds

characteristic of the people of Hell Fire and ultimately enters Hell Fire, and one

of you may do evil deeds characteristic of the people of Hell Fire so much so that

there is nothing except a cubit between him and Hell Fire, then what has been

written for him decides his behavior and he starts doing good deeds characteristic of

the people of Paradise and ultimately enters Paradise.”

TRADITION 20

Narrated Abu Musa Radhiyallahu ‘Anhu:

A man came to the Prophet and said, "A man fights for pride and haughtiness, another

my Lord! Admit into Paradise even those who have faith equal to a mustard seed in

their hearts.” Such people will enter Paradise, and then I will say, “O Allah admit

into Paradise even those who have the least amount of faith in their hearts.”

Anas then said: “As if I were just now looking at the fingers of Allah's Apostle.”
TRADITION 33

Narrated Ma’bad bin Hilal Al-‘Anzi Radhiyallahu ‘Anhuma:

We, i.e., some people from Basra gathered and went to Anas bin Malik, and we went

in company with Thabit Al-Banani so that he might ask him about the Hadith of

Intercession on our behalf. Behold, Anas was in his palace, and our arrival coincided

with his Duha prayer. We asked permission to enter and he admitted us while he was

sitting on his bed. We said to Thabit, “Do not ask him about anything else first but the

Hadith of Intercession.” He said, “O Abu Hamzah! There are your brethren from

Basra coming to ask you about the Hadith of Intercession.”

Anas then said, “Muhammad talked to us saying, “On the Day of Resurrection the

people will surge with each other like waves, and then they will come to Adam and

say, “Please intercede for us with your Lord.” He will say, “I am not fit for that but

you'd better go to Abraham as he is the Khalil of the Beneficent.” They will go to

Abraham and he will say, “I am not fit for that, but you'd better go to Moses as he is

the one to whom Allah spoke directly.” So they will go to Moses and he will say, “I

am not fit for that, but you'd better go to Jesus as he is a soul created by Allah and His

Word.” (Be: And it was) they will go to Jesus and he will say, “I am not fit for that,

but you'd better go to Muhammad.”

They would come to me and I would say, “I am for that.” Then I will ask for my

Lord's permission, and it will be given, and then He will inspire me to praise Him

with such praises as I do not know now. So I will praise Him with those praises and

will fall down, prostrate before Him. Then it will be said, “O Muhammad, raise your
head and speak, for you will be listened to; and ask, for your will be granted (your

request); and intercede, for your intercession will be accepted.” I will say, “O Lord,

my followers! My followers!” And then it will be said, “Go and take out of Hell (Fire)

all those who have faith in their hearts, equal to the weight of a barley grain.” I will go

and do so and return to praise Him with the same praises, and fall down (prostrate)

before Him. Then it will be said, “O Muhammad, raise your head and speak, for you

will be listened to, and ask, for you will be granted (your request); and intercede, for

your intercession will be accepted.” I will say, “O Lord, my followers! My

followers!” It will be said, “Go and take out of it all those who have faith in their

hearts equal to the weight of a small ant or a mustard seed.” I will go and do so and

return to praise Him with the same praises, and fall down in prostration before Him. It

will be said, “O, Muhammad, raise your head and speak, for you will be listened to,

and ask, for you will be granted (your request); and intercede, for your intercession

will be accepted.” I will say, “O Lord, my followers!” Then He will say, “Go and take

out (all those) in whose hearts there is faith even to the lightest, lightest mustard seed.

(Take them) out of the Fire.” I will go and do so.”

When we left Anas, I said to some of my companions, “Let's pass by Al-Hasan who is

hiding himself in the house of Abi Khalifa and request him to tell us what Anas bin

Malik has told us.” So we went to him and we greeted him and he admitted us. We

said to him, “O Abu Said! We came to you from your brother Anas Bin Malik and he

related to us a Hadith about the intercession the like of which I have never heard.” He

said, “What is that?” Then we told him of the Hadith and said, “He stopped at this

point (of the Hadith).” He said, “What then?” We said, “He did not add anything to

that.” He said, “Anas related the Hadith to me twenty years ago when he was a young
fellow. I don't know whether he forgot or if he did not like to let you depend on what

he might have said.” We said, “O Abu Said! Let us know that.” He smiled and said,

“Man was created hasty. I did not mention that, but that I wanted to inform you of it.”

Anas told me the same as he told you and said that the Prophet added, “I then return

for a fourth time and praise Him similarly and prostrate before Him. Then Allah will

say: “O Muhammad, raise your head and speak, for you will be listened to; and ask,

for you will be granted your request and intercede, for your intercession will be

accepted.” I will say, “O Lord, allow me to intercede for whoever said, La Ilaha Illa

Allah (None has the right to be worshiped except Allah).” Then Allah will say, “By

my Power, and my Majesty, and by My Supremacy, and by My Greatness, I will take

out of Hell (Fire) whoever said La Ilaha Illa Allah (None has the right to be

worshipped except Allah).”

TRADITION 34

Narrated 'Abdullah Radhiyallahu ‘Anhu:

Allah's Apostle said, “The person who will be the last one to enter Paradise and the

last to come out of Hell Fire will be a man who will come out crawling, and his Lord

will say to him, “Enter Paradise.” He will reply, “O Lord, Paradise is full.” Allah will

give him the same order thrice, and each time the man will give Him the same reply,

i.e., “Paradise is full.” Thereupon Allah will say to him, “Ten times of the world is

for you”.”
TRADITION 35

Narrated ‘Adi bin Hatim Radhiyallahu ‘Anhuma:

Allah’s Apostle said, “There will be none among you but his Lord will talk to him,

and there will be no interpreter between him and Allah. He will look to his right and

see nothing but his deeds which he has sent forward, and will look to his left and see

nothing but his deeds which he has sent forward, and will look in front of him and see

nothing but the Hell Fire facing him. So save yourself from the Hell Fire even with

half a date given in charity.”

Al-A’mash said: ‘Amr bin Murra said, Khaitsama narrated the same and added, “Even

with a good word.”

TRADITION 36

Narrated ‘Ubaidullah bin ‘Abdullah Radhiyallahu ‘Anhuma:

‘Abdullah bin ‘Abbas Radhiyallahu ‘Anhuma said, “O the group of Muslims! How

can you ask the people of the Scriptures about anything while your Book which Allah

has revealed to your Prophet contains the most recent news from Allah and is pure

and not distorted? Allah has told you that the people of the Scriptures have changed

some of Allah’s Books and distorted it and wrote something with their own hands and

said, “This is from Allah,” so as to have a minor gain for it. Won’t the knowledge that

has come to you stop you from asking them? No, by Allah, we have never seen a man

from them asking you about that the Book Al-Quran which has been revealed to you.”
TRADITION 37

Narrated Abu Salamah Radhiyallahu ‘Anhu:

has been given, I would do the same as he is doing.” The other is a man whom Allah

of the day.”
TRADITION 40
