Head Coach, 2nd Season
Carl Pelini was named head coach of Florida Atlantic University's football team on December 5, 2011. As the second head coach in the FAU program's 11-year existence, Pelini brought to its helm an intellectual thinker whose coaching experience ranges from serving as a top assistant at one of the most storied collegiate programs in the country, to rebuilding programs and teaching the game of football at the high school level. In his first season, Pelini focused on shifting the culture of football on Florida Atlantic's campus. He began with individual accountability and all while making the change in both the offensive and defensive schemes. The results were evident at season's end with a national rank improvement of more than 20 spots in scoring defense, punt returns, turnover margin (+35) and sacks allowed. A direct reflection of the efforts made towards individual accountability was in the area of penalties. The Owls improved from a 2011 national rank of 117 (68.17) in fewest penalty yards per game to No. 64 (51.15). Pelini successfully mixed the returning players with newcomers that were instrumental in the shift. He and his staff's efforts to take advantage of the on-campus stadium also came to fruition each home Saturday with an average of 300+ unofficial visitors and the strongest recruiting class, both

Pelini spent 2004 as the defensive coordinator and secondary coach at Minnesota State Mankato, under head coach Jeff Jamrog, a former Husker player and assistant coach. Pelini helped the Mavericks to a 6-5 record after a winless season the previous year. Prior to this, Pelini spent the 2003 season as Nebraska's defensive graduate assistant, where he worked with the defensive line and helped Nebraska to rank No. 2 nationally in scoring defense and takeaways and 11th in total defense. As the head coach at Austintown Fitch High School in Austintown, Ohio from 2000 to 2002, Pelini rebuilt a program that had not had a winning season for eight years before his arrival. His coaching efforts culminated with a 6-4 record in 2002. Pelini previously was the head coach and athletic director at Winnetonka High School in Kansas City, Missouri, from 1996 to 2000, and also served as the defensive coordinator at Blue Valley High School in Overland Park, Kan. Pelini played two seasons at Columbia University in New York, before transferring to Youngstown State
University in Youngstown, Ohio, where he earned his bachelor's degree in English literature in 1989. He was a defensive graduate assistant on Bill Snyder's staff at Kansas State University throughout the 1989 and 1990 seasons, and then served as a restricted earnings coach in 1991. He also received a master's degree in journalism from KSU in 1991 and a master's degree in education from Ohio State University in 1993. Playing Experience 1983-84 Columbia University
Pelini produced a first-round draft pick for the second straight-year when Amukamara was the 19th overall player selected in the 2011 NFL Draft. Amukamara was also the 2010 Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year, marking the second straight season a Husker took home the honor. David was named Big 12 Newcomer of the Year, while a leaguehigh five Huskers were first-team All-Big 12 selections. Two more earned second-team accolades and two others were honorable-mention picks. Nationally, four Blackshirts were named first-or second-team All-Americans by at least one organization. In 2009, the Huskers led the nation in scoring defense, pass efficiency defense and red zone defense, and was ranked in the top 10 nationally in sacks, rushing defense and total defense. Nebraska surrendered just 10.4 points per game, posted two shutouts and allowed only two opponents to reach 20 points. Nebraska held eight opponents to 10 or fewer points, including seven in single digits. Six of Nebraska's 14 opponents failed to score an offensive touchdown against the Blackshirts, while each of the team's opponents failed to reach their season average in points and only one reached its average in total offense. Ndamukong Suh was the second overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft after being named a Heisman Trophy finalist and the winner of the Associated Press National Player of the Year; Bronko Nagurski Trophy; Rotary Lombardi Award; Outland Trophy and the Chuck Bednarik Award. Suh was second on the Nebraska career chart in tackles for loss, including a school-record tying seven TFL in the Big 12 Championship Game. Defensive tackle Jared Crick set the school record with 5.0 sacks at Baylor University, while Matt O'Hanlon intercepted a school-record tying three passes against the University of Oklahoma. In Pelini's first season in 2008, the Nebraska defense finished second in the Big 12 in total defense and ranked among the top 25 nationally in rushing defense. In the process, Nebraska allowed 127 fewer yards per game than in 2007. Pelini joined the Nebraska staff after three seasons on Frank Solich's coaching staff at Ohio University. He played a vital role in helping the Bobcats turn around their football program, including a nine-win season and bowl game in 2006. Those marks were firsts for the university since the 1968 campaign. The Bobcat defense continued the turnaround the following season, ranking in the top 30 nationally in scoring and total defense in 2007.

Aside from the rapid approaching signing day and helping Carl Pelini put together the offensive coaching staff, Wright faced the task of converting FAU to an up-tempo attack as opposed to the pro-style which had been the Owls mainstay since inception. To make his task more difficult, he would move to do so with just three-starting newcomers. By game two the starting quarterback position was solidified. Wright and the offensive staff made great strides by playing to the strengths of each individual and not forcing or sticking to one answer. It began with the quarterbacks. Senior QB Graham Wilbert improved his efficiency by 68% moving from 91.72 as a junior to 134.62. He reduced his interceptions to six after tossing double-digits in 2011. More importantly for the team, Wilbert spread the ball to eight different receivers for a score after tossing just seven touchdowns the previous season. Wright's system allowed Wilbert to look for answers all over the field which opened the door for the senior to have career games with a season high 403 passing-yards against in-state rival FIU. He used the knowledge of the new system to hurt opponents with the short pass while also finding receivers with 50, 60 and 75 yard passes. Protecting the quarterback was key to the team's success. FAU was T-104 nationally in sacks allowed prior to Wright's arrival. They improved that rank by 21 spots in 2012 providing more options for the offense to work. The offense also lost a workhorse in the backfield with the graduation of Alfred Morris, who graduated and turned in an outstanding rookie season with the NFL's Washington Redskins. To offset this loss, Wright and the offense saw seven individuals carry the ball more than once and not one ended the season with negative yardage. As a unit, they tallied just 38 yards less than the previous season with a dominate running back. Much of that success can be attributed to fewer sacks eliminating the negative 179 yards lost by the previous season's quarterbacks. To exemplify the total improvement, FAU moved up 22 spots in the national ranking for total yards by improving its average yards per game by 102 yards per game. With one season and two spring seasons under their belts, FAU offense will draw upon the positives gained in 2012 and will begin its ascent as each recruiting class adds to the compliment of players who fit the system.

At Florida Atlantic Pete Rekstis was named the Owls defensive coordinator in March 2012. Rekstis came to FAU with 18 years of experience including 15 as a defensive coordinator, eight seasons at Mid-American Conference member Miami University and Kent State University. His experience, along with that of Head Coach Carl Pelini, who previously served as the defensive coordinator at the University of Nebraska, quickly paid off for the young Owls defense which ended the season ranked No. 27 nationally in pass defense. A primary reason was the play of senior Brent Harstad who earned second team All-Sun Belt honors and concluded his career fifth in the league with 103 tackles and was the only defensive back in the league to be listed among the eight. While Harstad's game gained recognition, juniors Jeremy McKnight and Keith Reaser combined for 95 tackles. Freshman Cre'von LeBlanc made a splash drawing nine starts and the praise of the coaching staff with 42 tackles, one for a loss, and was credited with breaking-up four passes. While the secondary played a pivotal role in the success of the defense, FAU's defense rose nearly 20 spots in the national rankings in scoring defense and was a major contributor in the Owls 35 spot improvement in national turnover margin. The Owls will return 22 guys on the defensive side of the ball, including nine starters.

At Florida Atlantic Matt Edwards came to FAU from Miami University-Ohio where he served as special teams coordinator and linebackers coach. After 10 years, Edwards will be reuniting with another former Red Hawks' defensive coordinator Pete Rekstis, who also served as defensive coordinator during Edwards' first year with the team.

At Florida Atlantic Sims joined Carl Pelini's staff in mid-December of 2011 as one of the first hires. The duo hit the ground running with the 2012 signing day just months away. The class needed to be built, developed and signed on February 1, 2012 the Owls added 29 players to its roster, and was rated as one of the best in the program's 12 year existence, allowing Sims to turn his attention to the 2013 class and to his on-the-field duties as wide receivers coach. Sims entered the 2012 spring practice with concerns for the wide receivers. The group had tallied just eight touchdowns in 2011 and just one receiver had more than one touchdown reception, and he was lost to graduation. Another blow came to the unit when DeAndre Richardson, the team's reception leader, suffered a broken ankle that would eliminate him from the 2012 campaign. The receivers stepped up to the task with a total of 18 touchdown receptions among eight different receivers. William Dukes, a second team All-Sun Belt member, led the receivers with 63 catches, nearly three times as many catches as his previous campaign, and the sophomore averaged 81.6 yards per game. Dukes saved the best for his final game of 2012 with a record setting 204 yards and two scores. While Dukes tallied four 100+ games and a total of six games with 96+ yards, the opportunities for junior college transfer and honorable mention All-Sun Belt member Daniel McKinney. McKinney had two touchdown catches in FAU's road win over WKU and tallied a total of 48 catches on the season. The wide receiving corps continued to develop throughout the season but questionably none more than walk-on Jenson Stoshak who ended his freshman campaign with two starts, two touchdowns and a scholarship. Stoshak will be one of 11 who caught a pass in 2012 that returns to the experience unit and more importantly all will have a spring season, in many cases two, under their belts as they enter 2013 with a new quarterback and new challenges. Sims joined the Indiana University staff in 2011 after 16 years in the coaching profession, a 45-19 head coaching record and one national championship appearance as a head coach. His day-to-day duties would take him away from on-field responsibilities and focused more on all recruiting aspects for the Big Ten member.
Matt Edwards
At Florida Atlantic Allen joined the staff in fall 2009 as a graduate assistant and was elevated to assistant coach in January 2010. In his first season as a collegiate assistant coach, Allen watched senior Lester Jean flourish. Jean was named second team all-conference and became FAU's first East/West Shrine Game invitee. Jean then joined the Houston Texans as a free agent where he was a member of the 2012-13 play-off roster. Allen began recruiting in the spring of 2010 and moved from wide receivers to quarterbacks as the team began preparation for 2011. The quarterback position came out of the spring, undecided with no clear-cut leader among the four. As preseason camp opened questions remained. Graham Wilbert was named a week before the opener. Wilbert suffered a mid-season set back allowing David Kooi the opportunity to step forward, only to see sophomore Stephen Curtis take advantage by surpassing Kooi for the No. 2 spot upon Wilbert's return. Allen worked with the inexperienced unit and saw flashes of winning football among the four who had a total of 13 collegiate pass attempts entering the 2011 season. In 2012, the FAU Alum moved once more to tight ends coach. The new offensive system required more of the position than in years past and Allen and his corps responded. At season's end junior Nexon Dorvilus earned second team All-SBC and the team's Student Athlete of the year award while sophomore Alex Deleon earned the program's first Iron Owl Award for his offseason efforts in the weight room and in conditioning drills. Both awards exemplify the hard work and dedication that the tight ends bring to their lives, not just to the sport of football. On the field, the duo combined for 14 starts, 43 catches, 378 yards and six scores. Dorvilus ended the season tops among all receivers with five touchdowns and third on the team with 301 receiving yards.

Scott Community College (Offensive Coordinator) 2000-01 Northern Michigan University (Graduate Assistant/RB/Academic Coordinator) 1997 Northern Michigan University (Student Assistant Coach/Defensive Line) At Florida Atlantic Jovan Dewitt came to FAU in January of 2012 with the responsibility of the linebackers. The veteran coach was also afforded the luxury of nucleus to build up with three players who were the team's top-three tacklers returning from 2011. This corps proved significant as the defense shifted back to a 4-3 base defense and eventually employed a dime package to defense the league's spread offenses. David Hinds led the Owls in 2011 with 110 tackles. He returned for his senior season with the burden of leadership and assisting the coaches with a team culture change despite the fact he wouldn't be with the program to reap the rewards. Hinds started every game and was a more complete player despite fewer tackles. Hinds recorded five double-digit tackle performances as well as his single-season high, two forced fumbles and his first two fumble recoveries. While Hinds junior campaign was virtually a one man show, including the development of true freshman Andrae Kirk, it was that duo which ended the season playing their best football. Their efforts were supported by transfer Adarius Glanton who joined the team in August and made an immediate impact, especially after Randell Johnson's preseason was slowed with injury. Glanton was hot coming out of the box with an interception at Georgia andfour games with double-digit tackles, including 11 at Alabama. Kirk began the year by taking advantage of every opportunity and ended it with 11 tackles his final game, including two for a loss and all-conference honorable mention honors as well as a third team all-conference selection by Phil Steele's Magazine. The trio was two, three and four among team tackle leaders and combined for nearly 30% of the team's tackles. Linebackers accounted for three of the team's eight interceptions (Glanton 2, Freedom Whitfield 1) and were critical in the Owls No. 27 national rank in pass defense. FAU also improved 20 spots in scoring defense. Dewitt also worked with the special teams which saw a 35 spot jump in kick returns and a 24 spot improvement in punt returns.
Kerry Dixon II Running Backs

Washington High School At Florida Atlantic Kerry Dixon joined FAU's staff in January after working with offensive coordinator Brian Wright. Dixon's no. one problem to solve was replacing FAU's all-time rusher and current Washington Redskin Alfred Morris. The answer was that one back would not replace the hardnosed back. Multiple players would use diversified skills to provide different looks and different strengths and all would combine for just 38 yards less and 167 more receiving yards. The backs were led by Jonathan Wallace who tallied 673 yards and two more touchdowns when combining rushing/receiving scores. Dixon's will face a new challenge in 2013 which is finding time and carries for five senior running backs, all with experience. The path is expected to be led by Wallace who broke onto the scene during the 2012 spring drills and continued to improve as the season progressed. Damian Fortner was second on the squad but led the backs with 344 receiving yards. Transfer Martese Jackson rushed for 105 yards in the season opener and will return for playing time Travis Jones rounds out the group with a team leading 221 kick return yards. The stable will also see the emergence Jeremy Gaskins, Carry White and Antonio Washington as well as a cast of newcomers.

Coaching Experience 2012- Florida Atlantic (Assistant Coach/Offensive Line) 2006-2011 South Dakota State University (Assistant Head Coach/Offensive Coordinator) 2002-2005 South Dakota State University (Assistant Coach/Offensive Line) 2001- Wartburg College (Assistant Coach/Offensive Line) 1999-2000 South Dakota State (Graduate Assistant) At Florida Atlantic Luke Meadows was one of the final staff members added with the knowledge that the offensive line would play a critical part in the success of the offense. By joining FAU, it was the first time in 10 years that Meadows would be asked to build something from scratch. While he returned several starters, the line would be asked to protect for a new system, and for the first time FAUs line would work with a mobile quarterback. Meadows began the year with two linemen that had earned significant playing time. He inserted junior college transfer Mustfa Johnson, saw the emergence of DeAndre Williams and Ricaldo Henry and his line was built. The starting five remained intact and did not miss a start, with the exception of the season's second game. Andrew Czuprynski started at left guard his final three seasons at FAU (36-consecutive games). This stability paid off with more than a 100 yard improvement in FAU's total offense and a national rank jump of 22 spots. The line's pass protection saw the quarterback pass efficiency rating improve by 55 spots while the sacks allowed ranking jumped 21 spots. The running game maintained its production despite losing FAU's all-time rushing leader. The line was a true help in this matter by eliminating the sacks and a negative 179 rushing yards lost by the previous season's quarterbacks. With one season and two spring seasons under their belts, FAUs offensive line will draw upon the positives gained in 2012.

At Florida Atlantic Ross Watson was one of the first hires for first year head coach Carl Pelini. Watson brought the knowledge and culture that the young football team would need to make the transition to new defensive schemes. The results translated into a team that was ranked No. 27 nationally in pass defense. While the secondary played a pivotal role in the success of the defense, FAU's defense rose nearly 20 spots in the national rankings in scoring defense and was a major contributor in the Owls 35 spot improvement in national turnover margin. Keith Reaser was the mainstay among the corners and finished his junior campaign with 45 tackles, two interceptions and a fumble recovery which he returned for a score. While Reaser started in every game the opposite corner was held by D'Juan Smith who started the first nine. Smith finished his sophomore season with 25 tackles, an interception and a team high eight passes broken up. Watson will return all but Demetrius Williamson, who split time between safety and corner, and will have the experience of two off seasons and the first full season, in the program's 11 year history, where both the nickel and dime packages were used on a regular basis.

East Mississippi CC: As a freshman, Johnson earned honorable mention All-America honors to continue the streak of five-consecutive seasons for East Mississippi Community College to produce an All-American. Johnson was a member of EMCC's 2011 NJCAA National Championship team but sat out. While under center at EMCC, which ended 2012 ranked No. 15 nationally by NJCAA and No. 12 by JCGridiron.com, the Lions compiled an 8-2 record, after an 8-0 start and outscoring opponents 389-24, but fell in the final two games by a combined two points, including a 47-46 loss in the MACJC State Semifinals. Johnson led EMCC with 284.6 passing yards per game and 27 touchdowns. He was second on the squad in rushing with 121 carries for 540 yards, an average of 4.5 yards per carry and he led the ground game with 12 touchdowns. Johnson scored multiple touchdowns in every game including a combined season high seven versus northwest Mississippi, a game that he was 33-of-46 for 422 yards with four TDs and ran for another three on a 21-114 ground performance. He tossed a season high five scores at Southwest Mississippi and totaled 403 yards on 21 passes. In the final game of his EMCC career, the freshman tallied 557 yards of offense, 455 in the air and 102 on the ground and scored four times.

Earned the squads Student-Athlete of the Year honors at the 2012 season ending banquet. He completed the equation, as he used his size and intelligence to sustain a starting spot among a talent-rich corps of FAU tight ends who were asked to use a different skill set as the Owls moved from a pro-style to a spread offense where more pass and run protection was needed. Dorvilus' strong ingame adjustments allowed him to serve as an experienced leader on the field. Due to the depth he was often apart of a two tight end set. He led FAU's 13 receivers with five touch downs and was third with 301 yards. He had multiple catches in all but three games in 2012. He recorded a career-high six receptions in FAU's victory over Troy, including two scores, the second a game-winning touchdown. He tallied a career-high 78 yards in the same game as well as a career-long 38-yard reception. Dorvilus leads all FAU receivers with four SBC touchdown catches, is third in league games only with 25.1 yards per game, third with 10.0 yards per catch and third in SBC catches with 19.

He was awarded the teams Iron Owl honor, the first recipient of the award, earned the honors through his off-season efforts in the weight room and in conditioning drills. His hard work paid off earning four starts and receptions in half the contest. He tallied 13 receptions for a total of 77 yards and a touchdown reception against then No. 1 Alabama. Wide receiver William Dukes, who earned second team All-Sun Belt honors the final week of the 2012 season, was named the team's Offensive MVP. Dukes was a wire-to-wire leader among FAU's 13 receivers. His breakout game was the second game of the season and the SBC opener, versus MTSU. Dukes had six receptions for 60 yards. At Georgia, a top-five team, Dukes tallied 98 yards on five receptions. He flirted with the 100-yard plateau at the University of LouisianaMonroe with 96 yards and broke the barrier the following game at South Alabama with five receptions for 119 yards, grabbed his first of 50+ yarder and his first score. The following two games he recorded 100+ yards. He caught nine passes, did not have a dropped ball, in FAU's victory over Western Kentucky. In the last FAU vs. FIU, as Sun Belt Conference members, Dukes had six receptions for 116 yards. His final game of 2012, the lanky receiver caught a 75-yard touchdown reception, the sixth longest in school history. He tallied 204 yards, on nine catches, versus Louisiana and scored twice to earn CollegeFootballPerformance.com's national wide receiver of the week honors. He consistently was listed among the league's top-10 in both receptions per game and receiving yards per game. He is also listed among the national's top-100 receivers in yards per game. While just a sophomore, he is closing in on the program's all-time top-10 list. Season high nine receptions twice, season high 204 yards versus ULL and his longest reception was the 75-yarder versus ULL. Dukes averaged 100.2 yards in SBC games and 15.4 yards per catch versus SBC opponents. Recorded a catch in all but the Alabama game, a game he saw limited action due to an injury in the previous game.

In his second season as head coach, Pelini continues to change the culture of FAU football with five players joining the roster holding a state title, one of which holds two titles. A total of 15 have earned all-state honors and everyone earned an all-conference selection. There are three who have earned JUCO All-American honors. There are three who have earned JUCO All-American honors. The Owls welcomed five players at the semester break, each of which has earned A.A. degrees. Among the incoming freshmen, nine hold a 3.0+ G.P.A. and the overall G.P. A. of the class is 2.95. His senior campaign saw similar numbers with 105 tackles, including 70 solo and 15 for a loss, three forced fumbles, a fumble recovery, six passes broken up and two interceptions. High School: Played for Joey Wiles at St. Augustine High School where he was a 2012 first team Florida High School Class 6A Elite Team member as a wide receiver. St. Augustine finished the season 11-1 due in part to his allcounty efforts. Mitchell was credited with 52 passes for 1,095 yards and 12 scores. He set the school's single-season records for yards. At seasons end, Mitchell was named second team allstate (6A), to the First Coast Team. In a span of three games during his senior campaign, he recorded 22 tackles and two interceptions. He is a two-sport athlete (football and track). Personal: Business major. He is the son of Bobby Allen and Qwanda Mitchell and was born in St Augustine. As a hobby, he is a pianist. Dean College: Played for Dean College where he earned first team All-American honors as well as first team all-conference recognition at both wide receiver and return specialist. He was recognized as the team's special team player of the year as a senior. High School: Played for Steve Schultz at Osbourn High School where he earned first team all-conference honors as a wide receiver and defensive back. Personal: Son of Karen Morris and Rodney Whitehead. Whitehead's career goals include creating a program to keep children out of trouble. Kalib Woods, 6-3, 182, WR, Fr, Jacksonville, Fla. High School: Played for Ronnie Cottrell at Godby High School, which captured the Class 5A state Championship and finished the season 14-1. Thomas earned first team all-conference, 5A all-state and was named to the Big Bend Tallahassee Democrat team. Thomas tallied 74 tackles, including 52 solo and a sack. He also had eight interceptions and a fumble recovery. He was named Godby's defensive MVP and to the 5A FHSAA Elite Team as well as second team All-American by MaxPreps.com. As a junior he recorded 86 tackles and seven interceptions. Personal: Undecided in major. He is the son of Lester and Maria Thomas and was born in Tallahassee. High School: Played for Scooter Molander at Brophy College Prep where he earned all-state honors. He also was selected all-conference and all-section his sophomore through his senior season. He also was named the Player of the Year in Arizona and was a member of the all-Arizona team as a senior. The multi-purpose player was a three-year starter and was awarded the Ron Pritchard award as the best linebacker in the state. Personal: Business major. He is the son of Greg and Debra Relf. He has two brothers Kendrick and Cory. Relf was born in Phoenix, Ariz. Ronnie Scott, 5-10, 165, CB, Fr, Panama City, Fla. (Chamberlain) High School: Played for DJ Mayo at Chamberlain High School where he earned allstate honorable mention honors as a senior. High School: Played for Josh Corey at Duncan Fletcher High School where he earned all-district, and all-conference honors. His teammates named him the Offensive Player of the Year in high school, where he also won the captain award. Following a senior season of 48 tackles, 876 yards and eight TDs he also was named third team all-state 8A. He earned Athlete of the Week for Dec. 4, 2012, after contributing in both football and basketball. He ended his career as the third all-time receiver in the history of Fletcher High School. He was nominated and selected to play in the Florida vs. Georgia all-star game. Woods is a three-sport athlete (football, basketball and track). Personal: Business administration major. He is the son of Katina Gadson and was born in Daytona Beach. He is a relative of Lionel Gates who is a running back for the Buffalo Bills in the NFL.
High School: Played for Dan Marguriet at Taravella High School where he was a two-year first team all-county selection and was the Central player of the year. Miller participated in the Dade vs. Broward all-star game and the Private vs. Public all-star game. As a senior, he tallied 56 tackles, including three sacks, four interceptions, 15 pass break-ups and scored five touchdowns. He is a two-sport athlete (football and track).
High School: Played for Jay Walls at Navarre High School where he earned second team allstate as well as all-area honors as a senior. Warren was named the Big School Player of the Year and the Offensive Player of the Year. He rushed for 1,831 yards, scored 19 touchdowns is final campaign on 233 carries. He tallied five games with more than 200 rushing yards as a senior. He also was credited with 71 receiving yards and 45 tackles. The Pensacola News Journal named him the Player of the Year. He is a two-sport athlete (football and weightlifting).
