This Week
(chronological order)
They cried, Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord (Psalm 118:26). This was reminiscent of how Simon Maccabaeus entered the city 150 years before after defeating Israels enemies in battle. They welcomed him with thanksgiving and branches of palm trees. They expected that Jesus would conquer the hated Romans in similar fashion. They also spread out their garments on the ground before Him just as they did when Jehu was anointed king (2 Kings 9:13). The psalmists words, Blessed in the name of the Lord is He who comes! (literally translated) was the regular greeting with which pilgrims were addressed when they reached the Temple on the occasion of a great feast. He who comes was another name for the Messiah. He had finally arrived! Hosanna is a simple transliteration of the Hebrew for save now, occurring in the same form in 2 Samuel 14:4 and 2 King 6:26: Help, O king! This special weekend is a time when we ask God to help us in many ways, but particularly financial deliverance from debt. We are looking to our King, Who has come. Hopefully, our Hosannas will not be as hypocritical as were those during the Triumphal Entry, who later cried, Crucify Him! Also, I trust that we will give more than just garments or palm branches in our Bless the Lord Offering to retire our debt on our Phase 2 buildings. May we add the second part of Psalm 118:26, which was not spoken in Jerusalem: We have blessed you from the house of the Lord. Countless people have been blessed as we have expanded Gods house of ministry. Truly, blessed is the one who gives generously out of gratitude for Gods goodness and lovingkindness (Psalm 118:29). If the Lord asks you for your colt or anything else, may no one reply, Why are you doing this? I hope that you will answer, The Lord has need of it (Mark 11:3). May Jesus be glorified as we agree with Him, My house shall be called a house of prayer for all of the nations (Mark 11:17).
There are several beautiful paintings on display in the Commons (in the area across from the Lighthouse Bookstore, by the stairs) that are currently being offered in a silent auction. All proceeds go to the Bless the Lord offering. Bids close at 12:30pm on Sunday, March 31. Paintings donated by local artist and FBCN member Joyce Norwood.
