TEAM WORK a challenge for a group leader

TEAM WORK a challenge for a group leader

In the mid 1960s, Team Building emerged as a popular tool for work place management. The concept emerged because of an awareness of certain ideas 1. Involvement is a pre-condition to commitment. 2. Managers should act like team leaders and coaches, meaning thereby that Management should have facilitating role rather than directing role. 3. Working groups have necessary capacity to cope with their own problems provided they are aware of their capacity and problems. The institutions are created generally with certain objective such as producing and marketing goods, collecting and investing money, disseminating knowledge & skill, caring for the sick. Infact a team is created out of necessity, the necessity to perform the task of the institution. For example when one starts a small retail shop as a single person enterprise, he desires to expand it for making profit. For this he needs the people to engage with the tasks to the realization of objectives. The moment a second person is added to the enterprise, a team has been started. A team is capable of accomplishing much more than the total sum of what members are capable of accomplishing individually. Thus the teams are an effective means for management to democratize their organization and increase employee motivation. The successful manager achieves goal through his subordinates. This success depends on their productivity and motivation & their willingness to work together effectively as a team. How to build & motivate a team are the main jobs of a manager.

What is an effective team

In an effective team the group and its goal take precedence over the performance of any member. There should be a minimum of conflict, feuding, jealousy and personal aggrandizements etc. as these all can obstruct progress. Team members support each other especially when one member runs into a difficulty. They are receptive to new ideas. And they communicate well among themselves. The effective team honors the Individualism of its members but act as a unit. Each member contributes his knowledge to the overall efforts. Sharing of their view & experience also helps them improve their views. It brings out more of their latent abilities & provide an atmosphere for continuing growth & development. The effective team constantly tries to improve & updates their methods & members of the team feel competitive with other departments & organizations.

Difference between Groups & Teams

Broadly speaking the Group may be of two or more individuals (interacting and interdependent) who have come together to achieve particular objectives. On the other hand a WORK TEAM generates positive synergy through coordinated efforts. Their individual efforts results in a level of performance that is greater than the sum total of those individual inputs. The teams may create potential for an organization to generate greater outputs with no increase in inputs. Thus Group is quit different from T9999eam. But a group can be transformed or developed into a team when the individuals in a group have a common aim and in which the jobs and skills of each member fit in well with those of others.

Developing Loyalty
Merely calling a group - team does not automatically increase its performance. For building an effective team it is necessary to understand that a team grows from one person leader who needs to shift the centre from himself to the cooperative efforts of the team. It can be said that team work is no accident; it is the byproduct of a good leadership. A team is made up of individuals with a variety of temperaments, skills, talents, backgrounds & ways of approaching problems. If the Manager (leader of a team /group) fails to take these differences into account, members may pull in different directions. But if he manages to pull them together, he will have smooth functioning. For achieving this, a lot of understanding of what builds an effective team and what impedes it, is required. The loyalty cannot be based on gratitude or compulsion. It can be developed day by day & give and take. The manager who finds his people short on loyalty ought to ask himself what I have done to earn their loyalty. Loyalty is two way street. If a manager requires the response of his people beyond the line of duty, his people should also believe that their boss will also go beyond the line of the duty on their behalf. In fact the manager of an effective team is more oriented towards his group than towards upper management. He refrains from playing politics and motivates the people to play their role effectively in group - team.

COMPETITIVE ZEAL Basics of team improvement

TEAM WORK a challenge for a group leader

The manger must constantly face questions of how the team can be made more efficient and effective. There is always a room for improvement. The manager has to analyze his operations and problems and pin point the weak points in his teams performance. The manager must analyze the strengths, weaknesses, motives, needs and goals of each of his subordinates. Conflict arises when subordinate has an image of himself, his role, his responsibility while his manager thinks differently of him. Here the manager is required to bring these images into clearer focuses because the manager if provides them with right kind of motivation, the individuals can quickly learn new roles. The manager may help his people to recognize their ability to shift roles when situation actually demands major changes. Here we may take examples of union leaders/activists when they are promoted to supervisory positions, their attitude changes within six months. But when these union leaders are demoted due to certain economic difficulties these demoted supervisors acquire their pro union attitudes. Here we may also quote the experiment done by Stanford University's Psychologist Zimbardo.

Zimbardo's prison experiment

Zimbardo is a world renowned psychologist from Stanford University. He hired, at 15 a day, two dozen emotionally stable, physically healthy, law abiding students on extensive personality tests. He randomly assigned them role of either guard or prisoner and establish some basic rules. To give the experiment a realistic start the professor got the help of local police and got these students (doing the roles of prisoner) arrested from their respected places in an unannounced manner. For this two weeks experiment, the individual with assigned roles of guards were not given any training but they have to maintain law and order in prison without any physical violence. They have to work for 8 hours shift. The said mock prisoners had to keep in their cells round the clock and were allowed out only for meals, exercise and toilet privileges. To simulate the prison realities, the prisoners were having occasional visits of their parents/relatives. It took the mock prisoners to accept the authority of mock guards and the mock guards to adjust to their new roles. Soon the prisoners became increasingly passive and started behaving like actual prisoners while cleaning out their toilets and tolerating the bad behavior of the mock guards. On the other hand the guard started behaving like real guards, reminding the prisoner, as if they were actually inferior. Surprisingly no mock prisoner said that Stop this; I am a student like you. This is just an experiment. Simply speaking we may conclude from this experiment that the people if given chance have the natural capacity to assume those roles which are otherwise very different from their personalities. The managers should believe their team member's inherent qualities. Common Purpose For welding together individual team members, the manager use applied synergistic approach. He should develop the sense of common purpose among them & convince them that their cooperative actions contribute to a total effect which is greater than their independent contribution. The managers must recognize that some are real achieves and innovators and others are effective implementers. Work should be organized accordingly. The effective manager is sensitive to the influences his people have on one another. In addition to, gaining an insight into subordinates inter-relations, he must be aware of their informal clique patterns, special friendship status patterns, personality conflicts. This would help him in preventing the formation of competitive subgroups or avoiding the attempted cooperation between incompatible subordinates. Under the circumstances, he may take necessary steps for arranging conditions in which team members can improve their work by being cooperative with each other. Here we may take an example of Wipro Technologies. They arrange Meet your people programme regularly throughout the year for helping managers to have Business Strategy Meetings, goals objectives and career discussions, social events etc. The company has also War room which becomes a necessity when large teams which are geographically different, need to collaborate on a real time basis to discuss number of issues for achieving the goal. In emphasizing a common purpose, the manager should define the purpose of his unit, department or the company as a whole. For participatory decision making, the manager should invite his team members to participate in the genuine decision making process. As the team member would resent the involvement in trivial or unimportant issues. Further this would be utterly wrong to call the group members for Democratic group discussion on such issues which have already been decided by the seniors or the top management. Further it is very much necessary for an effective team manager to do some soul searching periodically about whether he is providing the climate which promotes team integration and team spirit. This would give new confidence to the manager to handle a number of challenges before him to build a better team.

More Banking More Development

More Banking More Development

BANKING means the business of a bank or banker. It is essentially a craft based on methodology and practices. We have moved a long way from the time when a bank was a mere deposit taking and money lending institution, veiled in conservatism and managed by people whose aim was maximum profits with minimum risks. A banker then was a fair-weather friend, lending an umbrella on sunny days and withdrawing it when it rained. Banking in India has had a thorough shake-up in the 50s, particularly with the conversion of the Imperial Bank of India into the State Bank of India. The old concepts, attitudes and methods in banking have yielded place to new techniques of viability, need-based finance and marketing. Today banks are participating in the nation-building activities and helping in bringing about socio-economic changes. Banking system has occupied an important place in our nations economy. A banking institution is indispensible in a modern society. It plays a pivotal role in the economic development of a country and forms the core of the money market in an advanced country. In the past several decades there were Commercial Banks and Co-Operative Banks, then in the middle of seventies Regional Rural Banks came into existence, the expansion of banks in such a way has organized the money market in rural areas as well. Earlier, people used to borrow money from Zamindars and then these Zamindars used to take handsome money from them and charged too much interest. Inspite of their whole life labour, they were unable to pay it. As a result these Zamindars occupy their lands, property, jewellary etc. and always try to cheat them in a way they can. But with the introduction of banking the situation was under control. With this poor, rich, daily labours started saving money and then soon the scheme of taking of loans was started, which proved a great boon for farmers. From this very beginning, today our farmers have much freedom to use banks that they can fulfill their needs. These banks are always there to provide them their maximum support and guidance. They provide them loans to get technologitally advanced machines, fertilizers and many more facilities. For financing agriculture and allied activities in the rural areas, though co-operative credit societies and Central Co-operative Banks have been participating since long, Commercial Banks began their active participation after the nationalization of major banks in 1969. The banks have penetrated into the country side by opening their branches in rural and semi-urban areas. They have adapted their lending policies and practices to suit the needs of the rural clientele, the motivational force behind this transition has been the Reserve Bank of India and the government which provided them the operational guidelines, introduced the system of institutional guarantees and reduced the risks involved in financing agriculture. A farmer needs short term credit in the form of crop loans to purchase seeds, fertilizers and pesticides and also to meet the labour cost, irrigation and other expenses of cultivation. Normally, they are repayable within 12 months but for the convenience of farmers it may be extended up to 18 months. Banks, as social organization, have to go out to the people and assist weaker sections in achieving their aspirations. They are thus, to act as catalytic agents for the development of the country. New strategies have been evolved for industrial development, both in small-scale and large-scale sectors and term lending has also been taken up by commercial banks. As our country falls in the category of developing countries, the banks are playing a vital role to make it a developed nation. These banks are not only benefitting small-scale and largescale sectors but providing a guarantee of bright future to our younger generation as they are the future of the country. They provide loans to the students for pursuing graduate and postgraduate studies, for professional courses or job-oriented diploma courses in India or for higher education abroad. Banks are also providing housing loans in direct or indirect way. It is providing direct housing loans to scheduled castes/tribes and other economically weaker sections of the society. In the present scenario, the world is changing with a great speed so is the introduction of new schemes in banking. We have ATMs at every corner of our country, we have credit cards, debit cards, anyway banking, bancassurance etc. All this has made life better and comfortable. Now, we have online banking. Despite all the advantages of convenience, speed and time savings, less than 10% of approximately 47 million bank customers in India have subscribed to net banking. Phone banking is the other popular self banking channel today. Branchless banking is much more than banking as you can bank with much less effort and cost. Banks are emerging as financial superstars offering everything from insurance to mutual funds. They are no longer mere wealth accumulators or custodians; they now help in wealth creation and wealth management. But most customers wish to maintain a traditional banking relationship so banks cant shed existing infrastructure in a hurry. We are passing through a very competitive banking era. Customer satisfaction is must. To meet the competition, the banks have taken many initiatives including projects for implementation of core banking solutions for providing Anytime Anywhere Banking. CBS gives us the capability to provide value added services to customers across multiple delivery platforms through integration of channels. The Banking services including ATM service, credit cards, debit cards, etc. have become more popular among common man. Now, more and more people are becoming the customers of banks. Now a common man can save money, can avail different loan policies for secured future, as he can start his own business with the help of loans. Even students can get their own account to save their own money from their pocket money. Banks are infact an indispensible part of our efforts to build India a strong country. So, India will prosper with the development of mass banking. With more effective and inclusive banking in India there will be more and more development and economic growth.

Unrest in LIBYA An End of a Cruel Dictator

Unrest in LIBYA An End of a Cruel Dictator

The History of Libya includes the history of its rich mix of ethnic groups added to the indigenous Berber tribes. Berbers, the bulk of Libyas population, have present throughout the entire history of the country. For most of its history, Libya has been subjected to varying degrees of foreign control, from Europe, Asia, and Africa. The modern history of independent Libya began in 1951. The history of Libya comprises six distinct periods: Ancient Libya, the Roman era, the Islamic era, Ottoman rule, Italian rule, and the Modern era.

Independent Libya
Prior to World War II Libya had been a colony of Italy until Italian forces were driven out by the Allies in 1943. Libya came under the control of France and the United Kingdom as a UN Trusteeship in 1947 when Italy formally relinquished its claim to Libya. As part of the arrangement the United Kingdom and France governed the three historical regions of Libya Tripolitania, Cyrenaica and Fezzan. The UK was responsible for Tripolitania and Cyrenaica and France was responsible for Fezzan. On 21st November 1949, the UN General Assembly passed a resolution that Libya should become independent before 1st January 1952.

Kingdom of Libya (1951-1969)

On December 1951, Libya declared its independence with representatives from Cyrenaica, Tripolitania and Fezzan declaring a union with the country being called the three states of Cyrenaica, Tripolitania and Fezzan having autonomy. The kingdom also had three capital cities: Tripoli, Benghazi and Bayda. Two years after independence, on 28th March 1953, Libya joined the Arab League. When Libya declared its independence on 24th December 1951 it was the first country to achieve independence through the United Nations and one of the first former European possessions in Africa to gain independence. The kingdom of Libya was proclaimed a constitutional and a hereditary monarchy and Idris was proclaimed king. Previously, the USSR had sought a Mandate over Libya following the end of World War II. Following independence Libya faced a number of problems. There were no colleges in the country and just sixteen college graduates. Also the country had just three lawyers with not a single Libyanphysician, engineer, surveyor or pharmacist in the kingdom. It was also estimated that only 250,000 Libyans were literate and that 5% of the population was blind, with eye diseases such as trachoma widespread. In light of these Britain provided a number of civil servants to staff the government. In April 1955, oil exploration started in the kingdom with its first oil fields being discovered in 1959. The first exports began in 1963 with the discovery of oil the Libyan economy drastically improved. But popular resentment grew as wealth was increasingly concentrated in the hands of the elite. On 25th April 1963, the federal system of government was abolished and in line with this the name of the country was changed to the kingdom of Libya to reflect the constitutional changes. As was the case with other Africa nations following independence, the remaining Italian settlers in Libya held many of the best jobs, Owned the best farmland and ran the most successful businesses. The monarcy came to an end on 1st September 1969 when a group of military officers led by Muammar al Gaddafi staged a coup d etat against king Idris while he was in Turkey for medical treatment. The revolutionaries arrested the army chief of staff and the head of security in the kingdom. After hearing about the coup, King Idris dismissed it as unimportant while it was initially reported (falsely) that the Crown Prince Hasan had announced his support for the new regime.Following the overthrow of the monarchy the country was renamed the Libyan Arab Republic. In 1977, Gaddafi renamed the state to Jamahiriya, a neologism translating to state of the masses. Gaddafi styled himself Leader and Guide of the Revolution of Libya. Gaddafi also styled himself as an advocate of Pan-Africanism, and was active in the establishment of the African Union in 2001. He used to give himself titles such as king of kings, leader of the Arab leaders and imam of the Muslims (at the 2009 Arab League Summit). Gaddafi stepped down as General Secretary of the General Peoples Committee in 1977, being succeeded by Abdul Ati al-Obeidi.

Unrest in LIBYA An End of a Cruel Dictator

However, he remained in autocratic control of the country as de-facto dictator, as he retained full control over the Libyan Armed Forces. Gaddafi undertook a number of military adventures during the 1970s to 1980s, including the Chadian-Libyan conflict, the LibyanEgyptian War and the Gulf of Sidra incident (1981). He introduced the Islamic Legion in 1972, a Libyan-sponsored pan-Arab paramilitary force by means of which Gaddafi aspired to establish a Great Islamic State of the Sahel. His open endorsement of terrorism led to the Reagan administration declaring Libya a state sponsor of terrorism on December 29, 1979, and eventually culminated in the 1986 US Bombing of Libya. The 1986 bombing of Libya was a turning-point in Gaddafis approach to the foreign relations of Libya. Gaddafi stopped endorsing terrorist attacks on western countries, and while his behavior remained extremely erratic, occasionally provoking international incidents such as the HIV trial in Libya and the Swiss-Libya diplomatic crisis, Gaddafi proved himself an erratic, provocative dictator causing great harm to his own people and country.

2011 Civil War

In February 2011, anti-government mass protests sprang up against Gaddafi in Benghazi and other towns of Libya, in the context of the wider Arab Spring. On 18th February demonstrators took control of Benghazi, the second largest city of Libya, with some support from police and military units. In reaction the government sent elite troops, which were resisted by Benghazis inhabitants and mutineering members of the military. In Benghazi, during the course of four separate protests that took place on 20th February, more than 200 people have died. The New York Times reported that the crackdown in Libya has proven the bloodiest of the recent government actions. On March 10, 2011 France became the first nation to recognize the National Transition Council of the anti-government rebels as the sole Representative of Libya. An Elysee source also announced that France plans to send an ambassador to Benghazi. Nations who recognize the Council as the government of Libya may not have to go through the process of obtaining UN security councils approval to establish a No-fly zone if the Council requests one, as this could count as a friendly request. On March 17, 2011 the United Nations Security Council passed Resolution 1973 with a 10-0 vote and five abstentions. The resolution sanctioned the establishment a no-fly zone and the use of all means necessary to protect civilians within Libya. Shortly afterwards, Libyan Foreign Minister Moussa Koussa stated that Libya has decided an immediate ceasefire and an immediate halt to all military operations. However, attacks against insurgent strongholds appear to have continued despite this claim. On March 19, 2011 the first Allied act to secure the no-fly zone began when French military jets entered Libyan airspace on a reconnaissance mission heralding attacks on enemy targets. Allied military action to enforce the ceasefire commenced the same day when a French aircraft opened fire and destroyed a vehicle on the ground. French jets also destroyed five tanks belonging to the Gaddafi regime. The United States and United kingdom launched attacks on over 20integrated air defense systems using more that 110 Tomahawk cruise missiles during operations Odyssey Dawn and Ellamy. On June 27, 2011 the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Gaddafi, alleging that Gaddafi had been personally involved in planning and implementing a policy of widespread and systematic attacks against civilians and demonstrators and dissidents. On 1st July 2011, 1.7 million people assembled in Green Square Tripoli to show defiance against the NATO bombings of Libya. By August 22, 2011 rebel fighters had entered Tripoli and taken Martyrs Square. Meanwhile, Gaddafi asserted that he was still in Libya and would not concede power to the rebels. On October 20, 2011 NTC forces captured Sirte, and in the process captured, and killed Muammar Gaddafi in Sirte. Now NATOs declaration to close down their mission at the end of October 2011 is really significant. But the coming months may see battles in Libya between factions with different views of what role religion should play in government as well as between different regional, local and ethnic groups. These may eventually be over come but not without significant instability. Undoubtedly the role of Americans with their strategic interest in this region is more important to be watched.

Crisil chief economist D.K Joshi views that such sharp increase in food inflation is quite worrying as the food prices have not been moderated despite a normal monsoon and good harvest. However Govt. is showing confidence that food inflation would moderate in the coming month on account of good monsoon. Does your tendency to be happy or miserable primarily concern your DNA We know that many factors govern whether we are happy or unhappy. In this context the external circumstances are definitely important. But a group of scientists from University College London; Harvard Medical school; University of California San Diego; and University of Zurich have different opinion. They conclude that variation in peoples happiness is heritable. The happiness may effect in ones DNA though the different races may have different propensities for it. The story becomes little controversial when ethnic origins of the volunteers are taken into account. However the studies comparing identical with non identical twins have helped to establish the heritability of many aspects of behavior and examination of DNA has uncovered some of the genes responsible for that. Recent work on both these fronts suggests that happiness is heritable but further studies in the area of genetic determinism is still required to reach the truth. The interest in the study of happiness not only among the geneticists but also among the economist and policy makers is well growing for measuring the human happiness in the terms of human's achievements. End of an erratic, provocative dictator of Libya Col. Moammar Gaddafi, the former Libyan erratic, provocative dictator who fled into hiding after rebels toppled his regime two months ago was killed on Oct 20, 2011 in Sirte, his home town. NATO claims, it marks the end of a successful mission as the west chose to intervene militarily on the pretex of protecting civilians from the internal unrest of that country. It was also been reported in world media that Gaddaffi was first captured alive but wounded and bloody. Later on he was dragged around by armed man in Sirte. Aljazeera showed gruesome footage of Gaddaffi's half naked corpse with lifeless open eyes and an apparent gunshot wound to the side of the head. This was a violent end of a ruthless and bombastic aristocrat who ruled Libya for 42 years as a self styled king of kings of Africa. Now real challenge before oil rich Libya is to avert chaos & establish a rule of law. Direction for Q. 201-205: In each of the following questions a short passage is given with one of the lines in the passage missing and represented by a blank. Select the best out of the five answer choices given, to make the passage complete and coherent. 201. Poverty is the state for the majority of the worlds people and nations. Why is this ? Have they been lazy, made poor decisions, and been solely responsible for their own plight ? What about their governments ? Have they pursued policies that actually harm successful development ? Such causes of poverty and inequality are no doubt real. But deeper and more global causes of poverty are often less discussed. These can be leaders of rich countries or other global actors such as multinational corporations, institutions, and influential people. In the face of such enormous external influence, the governments of poor nations and their people are often powerless. As a result, in the global context, a few get wealthy while the majority struggles. (1) Is it enough to blame poor people for their own predicament ? (2) What is the government doing about it ? (3) Are the wealthy ones in the nation even aware of this ? (4) The government has already taken measures to eradicate the same. (5) The huge gap between the rich and the poor in the nation is now narrowing. 202. Womens rights around the world are an important indicator to understand global well-being. A major global womens rights treaty was ratified by the majority of the worlds nations a few decades ago. ____________ These range from the cultural, political to the economic. For example, women often work more than men, yet are paid less; gender discrimination affects girls and, women throughout their lifetime; and women and girls are often the ones that suffer the most poverty. Many may think that womens rights are only an issue in countries where religion is law. Or even worse, some may think this is no longer an issue at all. But reading the report about the United Nations Womens Treaty and how an increasing number of countries are lodging reservations will show otherwise. Gender equality furthers the cause of child survival and development for all of society, so the importance of womens rights and gender equality should not be underestimated. (1) This treaty tackled and solved a number of issues related to women. (2) Why is it then, that women still face a number of problems on the domestic front ? (3) Thus, the woman today is ten times more empowered as compared to a woman say about a decade ago. (4) Womens activists across nations have implored the respective governments to take this seriously. (5) Yet, despite many successes in empowering women, numerous issues still exist in all areas of life. 203. Research has shown that air pollutants from fossil fuel use make clouds reflect more of the suns rays back into space. This leads to an effect known as global dimming whereby less heat and energy reaches the earth._________ However, it is believed that global dimming caused the droughts in certain parts of the world where millions died, because the northern hemisphere oceans were not warm enough to allow rain formation. Global dimming is also hiding the true power of global warming. By cleaning up global dimming-causing pollutants without tackling greenhouse gas emissions, rapid warming has been observed, and various human health and ecological disasters have resulted, as witnessed during the European heat wave in 2003, which saw thousands of people die. (1) This though, does not bring any relief in the problems associated with climate change. (2) This phenomenon thus is part of the climate change problem. (3) Scientists thus believe that this phenomenon goes hand in hand with global warming. (4) At first, it sounds like an ironic saviour to climate change problems. (5) The answer to all our problems with respect to climate change is definitely here. 204. Next to China, India is the most populated country in the world. __________ Particularly, rush to technical and higher education has increased as the scope for arts and science has become lesser and lesser due to lack of reforms and up gradation in the course structure and materials according to the developments of the world. Also, qualification in higher education gives added advantage to face successfully competition in the job market. (1) Keeping this in mind, the government has provided concessions in the admission fees for the arts and science streams in the country. (2) Naturally there is too much rush and competition in every field. (3) Despite this the rush to higher education is lesser. (4) This population increase, though, has not kept pace with the knowledge expansion around the world. (5) In the next decade it will become the most populous.

205. Analysts and industry pundits forecast that the notebook market, which has been growing faster than the desktop market for the past three years, is expected to overtake the desktop market by the year 2011-12. A fall in prices, large deals from governments and institutions, and demand from consumers and sectors such as education are expected to help the notebook numbers. According to research agencies, the year 2010-11 saw notebook volumes rise, and for the first time a million-plus notebooks were sold in India in a single quarter. The market has grown nearly four times for notebooks. The demand is driven by all sectors and a very buoyant consumer market, which prefers mobile computers. Entry-level notebook prices have dropped below the T 25,000 mark; this has helped break the ice with new customers. This drop in notebook prices has been helped by the drop in the prices of the building blocks that make a notebook. Its simple. With notebook volumes growing, the prices of the components are also bound to come down___________. (1) All this has resulted in a noticeable change in a number of large government tenders for notebooks; which were traditionally for desktops. (2) Because of this the government still prefers desktops to notebooks and has passed tenders for the same. (3) Thereby making them more expensive. (4) Thus the forecast for the coming year states that desktops will be the preferred technology choice only for consumers who cannot afford the exorbitantly priced notebooks. (5) Thus notebooks will become obsolete after a decade or so. (A) To elaborate briefly on these characteristics and dimensions that the author is talking about - INRIVIs are general tests intended to be used to classify students by percentile for measuring either aptitude or proficiency for admissions into or placement within a program. (B) Contrastingly, the CRM, such as a locally produced achievement test, measures absolute performance that is compared only with the learning objective, hence a perfect score is theoretically obtainable by all students who have a mastery of the pre-specified material, or conversely, all students may fail the test. (C) In most of these books the authors classify a measurement strategy as either norm-referenced (NRM) or criterionreferenced (CRM). (D) Another author points out how the type of interpretation that an NRM offers is the relative performance of the students compared with that of all the others resulting in, ideally, a bell curve distribution. (E) Numerous books on constructing and using language tests have been written by various authors. (F) CRMs, on the other hand, are more specific, achievement or diagnostic tests intended to be used for motivating students by measuring to what percent they have achieved mastery of the taught or learned material. (G) One of the authors clearly delineates the differences of these two types by focusing on the categories of test characteristics and logistical dimensions. 206. Efficiency in particular needs to be complimented for this-have led to substantially lesser energy intensity of economic growth. However, even the tempered demand numbers are (228) to be below 80Gw. Certain words are printed in bold to help you to locate them while answering some of the questions. In a reversal of the norm elsewhere, in India policymakers and economists have become optimists while bosses do the worrying. The countrys Central Bank has predicted that the countrys economy is likely to grow at a double digit rate during the next 20-30 years. India has the capability with its vast labour and lauded entrepreneurial spirit. But the private sector which is supposed to do the heavy lifting that turns India from the worlds tenth largest economy to its third largest by 2030 has become fed up. Business people often carp about Indias problems but their irritation this time has a nervous edge. In the first quarter of 2011, GDP grew at an annual rate of 7.8 percent; in 2005-07 it managed 9-10 percent. The economy may be slowing naturally as the low interest rates and public spending that got India through the global crisis are belatedly withdrawn. At the same time the surge in inflation caused by exorbitant food prices has spread more widely, casting doubt over whether India can grow at 8-10 percent in the medium term without overheating. In India, as in many fast growing nations, the confidence to invest depends on the conviction that the long term trajectory is intact and it is that which is in doubt. Big Indian firms too sometimes seem happier to invest abroad than at home, in deals that are often hailed as symbols of the countrys growing clout but sometimes speak to its weaknesses - purchases of natural resources that India has in abundance but struggles to get out of the ground. In fact a further dip in investment could be selffulfilling: if fewer roads, ports and factories are built, this will hurt both short term growth figures and reduce the economys long term capacity. There is a view that because a fair amount of growth is assured the government need not try very hard. The liberalization reforms that began in 1991 freed markets for products and gave rise to vibrant competition, at the same time what economists call factor markets, those for basic inputs like land, power, labour etc remain unreformed and largely under state control, which creates difficulties. Clearances today can take three to four years and many employers are keen to replace workers with machines despite an abundance of labour force. This can be attributed to labour laws which are inimical to employee creation and an education system that means finding quality manpower a major problem. In fact the Planning Commission, concluded that even achieving 9 percent growth wil! need marked policy action in unreformed sectors. Twenty years ago it was said that the yardstick against which India should be measured was its potential and it is clear that there remains much to do. 236. Why are employers reluctant to hire Indian labour force ? (A) Indias labour force is overqualified for the employment opportunities available

Direction for Q. 244-250. Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions given below it. Certain words/phrases are printed in bold to help you to locate them while answering . some of the questions. In many countries, a combustible mixture of authoritarianism, unemployment and youth has given rise to disaffection with strongmen rulers which has in turn spilled over into uprisings. Young people in these countries are far better educated than their parents were. In 1990 the average Egyptian had 4.4 years of schooling; by 2010 the figure had risen to 7.1 years. Could it be that education, by making people less willing to put up with restrictions on freedom and more willing to question authority, promotes democratization. Ideas about the links between education, income and democracy are at the heart of what social scientists have long studied. Since then plenty of economists and political scientists have looked for statistical evidence of a causal link between education and democratization. Many have pointed to the strong correlation that exists between levels of education and measures like the pluralism of party politics and the existence of civil liberties. The patterns are similar when income and democracy are considered. There are outliers, of course - until recently, many Arab countries managed to combine energy-based wealth and decent education with undemocratic political systems. But some deduce from the overall picture that as China and other authoritarian states get more educated and richer, their people will agitate for greater political freedom, culminating in a shift to a more democratic form of government. This apparently reasonable intuition is shakier than it seems. Critics of the hypothesis point out that correlation is hardly causation. The general trend over the past half-century may have been towards rising living standards, a wider spread of

basic education and more democracy, but it is entirely possible that this is being driven by another variable. Even if the correlation were not spurious, it would be difficult to know which way causation ran. Does more education lead to greater democracy ? Or are more democratic countries better at educating their citizens ? A recent NBER paper compared a group of Kenyan girls in 69 primary schools whose students were randomly selected to receive a scholarship with similar students in schools which received no such financial aid. Previous studies had shown that the scholarship programme led to higher test Scores and increased the likelihood that girls enrolled in secondary school. Overall, it significantly increased the amount of education obtained. For the new study the authors tried to see how the extra schooling had affected the political and social attitudes of the women in question. Findings suggested that education may make people more interested in improving their own lives but they may not necessarily see democracy as the way to do it. Even in established democracies, more education does not always mean either more active political participation or greater faith in democracy. Poorer and less educated people often vote in larger numbers than their more educated compatriots, who often express disdain for the messiness of democracy yearning for the kind of government that would deal strongly with the corrupt and build highways, railway lines and bridges at a dizzying pace of authoritarian China. So the wrong term is 584 which should be 582. The difference in the series is 153,133,113, 93,73,53 so the wrong term is 1077 which should be 1075 The series is 11 22 33 44 55 66 77 so 25 is the wrong term Every term is the half of previous term Suppose rubina buys x tickets of each type. So 55x + 85x + 105x = 2940 Solving above , x = 12 4 years SI = 10800 1 years SI = 2700

Sudoku Objective
The objective of the game is to fill all the blank squares in a game with the correct numbers. There are three very simple constraints to follow. In a 9 by 9 square Sudoku game: Every row of 9 numbers must include all digits 1 through 9 in any order Every column of 9 numbers must include all digits 1 through 9 in any order Every 3 by 3 subsection of the 9 by 9 square must include all digits 1 through 9

Similarly, smaller Sudoku puzzles, such as the 4x4 puzzle, must have the numerals 1 through 4 in each row, column and subsection. Larger Sudoku games (16 by 16) must have numerals 1 through 16 in each row, column and region. The principles are the same whatever the size of the game. Every Sudoku games begins with a number of squares already filled in, and the difficulty of each game is largely a function of how many squares are filled in. The more squares that are known, the easier it is to figure out which numbers go in the open squares. As you fill in squares correctly, options for the remaining squares are narrowed and it becomes easier to fill them in.

Fill 1 in G V block 2. Then fill 3 in G X block Then fill 7 in A W 4. Fill 5 in B X Fill 6 in C W 6. Fill 8 in D V Fill 2 in E V As 6,9 will have to come at A Q or B Q, so 2 can filled only in C R. 9. Fill 2 in A S. 10. Fill 2 in D U. 11. Complete the filling of 2 in all block i.e. I Q, H X. 12. Fill 4 in I X by looking at column X. 13. Fill 1 in H P and I T. 14. Fill 6 in I U. 15. Fill 7 in E P. 16. Fill 3 in D P. 17. Fill 5 in column P i.e. in A P, 4 in C P and 8 in B P. 18. Fill 3 in F W and 4 in D W. 19. In row D, as 1,5 cannot come in D T, so 6 will be filled here. 20. Then fill 6 in B S and A Q. 21. Fill 9 in B Q. 22. Fill 4 in A V and 9 in A T. 23. Fill 7 in B T and 3 in B V 24. Then fill 9 in C V to complete column V. 25. Fill 9 in H U. 26. Fill 3 in C U and 8 in C S. 27. Fill 8 in H T as neither 5 nor 7 can come here. 28. Then fill 8 in I W and 8 in G R. 29. Fill 5 in H W, 5 in I R, 4 in G Q and 7 in H R. 30. Fill 8 in F U, 7 in G U, 5 in E U, 3 in E T, 4 in F T, 4 in E R, 6 in F R, 6 in E X, 9 in F X, 9 in E S, 7 in F S, 1 in D S, 1 in F Q, 5 in D Q, 5 in G S. This completes ur job. Thanks!!!

Few Tips On Quantitative Skills/Computer Awareness Hence Taruns age = 15 years. 10. Four years ago the ratio between the ages of Veena and Rina was 15:11 respectively. The ratio between their present ages is 17:13 respectively. What will be Rinas age 3 years hence? A. Here well see that increase in ratio (i.e. 17-15 and 13-11) is equal to 2. Change in years is equal to 4 (between 4 years ago and present age), so we get 2 parts = 4, 1 part = 2, hence everything gets multiplies by 2, i.e. 17 becomes 34 yrs and 13 becomes 26. So Rinas present age is 26 yrs. 3 yrs hence she will be 29 yrs old. ....................................................

Few Tips On Quantitative Skills & Vedic Calculation (From the Root of 11)
43*11? Add 4 and 3 and put in between them i.e. 473. 42*22? Multiply 42 by 2 which is equal 84 and then multiply 84 by 11. 8+4 = 12, and put in between them i.e. 924. 3. Find the Square of 11111? A. The number of 1s in the number are 5, so we go from 1 and move till 5 and come back to 1 again i.e. 1 2 3 4 5 4 3 2 1 . 4. What is sq.rt. of 123456787654321? A. The number of 1s in the sq. rt. has to be 8 i.e. 11111111 which is equal to the highest digit in this symmetric number above. This only happens in case of a number starting from 1 goes to a highest digit and then back to 1 . 5. If 3x+2y = z, If z is even then what is x? Even Odd Both None of these A. As RHS i.e. z is even so LHS has to be even too. As 2y is even number, so 3x has to be even, which is possible only when x is even 6.
42 + 42 + 42 + 42 + ................ = ?

a. 7 b. 6 c. 8 d. 9 A. This question has a very easy answer. You just have to calculate the sq. rt. of the next perfect square coming after 42 i.e. sq. rt. of 49 = 7. 7. Find the middle number, if the sum of 5 consecutive numbers is 385? A. In this question we just have to calculate 385 5 i.e. 77, which is the middle number. 8. Find the numbers, if the sum of 8 consecutive even numbers is 72? A. In this question we divide 72 by 8, we get 9, so 4 even numbers are below 9 and 4 even numbers above 9 i.e. 2,4,6,8,10,12,14,16. 9. The ratio between the present ages of Tarun and Varun is 3:7 respectively. After 4 years Varuns age will be 39 years. What was Taruns age 4 years ago? A. The answer can be found out without supposing the ages to be x, y etc. Lets see how. If Varuns age is given to be 39 after 4 years, so present age is 35 years. Ratio of Tarun and Varun is 3:7. Varuns part is 7 which is actually equal to 35 years. We have to calculate Taruns part which is 3. 7 parts = 35 years 1 part = 5 so 3 parts = 15 years
