Henuid constant speed Hydrodynamic Couplings

Introduction
Henuid hydrodynamic couplings have been developed and designed by employing the most up-to-date engineering concepts resulting in a product of the highest technical standard and excellent operating performance. Carefully dimensioned models were elaborated for projects with power requirements from 02 to 2500 HP.

Advantages arising from use of Henfluid hydrodynamic couplings

Start-up of electric motor under noload conditions, even when the machine driven is loaded or blocked; Immediate drop of motor start-up current; Smooth acceleration of heavy loads without use of overdimensioned motors. The maximum motor torque is normally required at start-up, but thanks to the use of Henuid hydrodynamic couplings the motor can be dimensioned based on the power actually required by the machine driven; Coupling reduces maximum torque providing efcient protection of the motor as well as of the machine driven and the product being manufactured, irrespectively of the load to which the secondary rotor (exit shaft) is subjected. While the secondary rotor may as much as stall (100% slippage) on account of the overload, the primary rotor (entry shaft) will go on turning. Adjustments of the maximum torque transmitted are achieved by simply adjusting the volume of the oil charge; Even load distribution among all the motors in case of multiple drive. Startup can be made to occur in sequence thereby avoiding high peaks of power consumption; Complete protection against overheating. In case of prolonged blocking of the secondary rotor (stall), a fuse plug is triggered emptying the coupling and thus interrupting transmission; Power transmission free from wear, seeing that there is no mechanical contact between the driven and the driving parts; Great economy through protection of all the electrical and mechanical drive elements, even when rotation commutation / reversal occurs at high frequency; In consequence of the above advantages, Henuid hydrodynamic couplings offer a vast range of industrial applications, such as: conveyors, mineral extraction, mineral processing, chemical and food industries, machines with great start-up inertia, etc.

Functioning
The principal components are two shelllike, axially winged rotors, one being the pump rotor and the other one the turbine rotor, in addition to a plain carcass which doubles as an oil reservoir containing the internal rotor.

Functioning
The rotors are tted one facing the other with a pre-determined clearance, without any mechanical contact between them. The Henuid hydrodynamic coupling works like a centrifugal pump and a hydraulic turbine. By means of an entry force (conventional electric motor or electric ring motor), the kinetic energy is transmitted by the oilll inside the coupling. The oil is accelerated by the pump rotor and through centrifugal force the movement is transmitted to the turbine rotor; the torque thus generated is transmitted to the secondary hub and, consequently, to the machine driven. Any one of the rotors can assume the task of pump or turbine, depending on the direction of assembly. Wear is practically inexistent as there is no mechanical contact, and the efciency of the system is only dependent on the difference between the entry and exit rotation of the coupling (slippage).

Idle position

Start-up

Normal operation

The working uid remains static inside the coupling.

The driving machine provides the energy to accelerate the working uid so as to generate a round-about current. Due to the transmission of the kinetic energy by the uid, the internal rotor is put in motion.

During normal operation only the torque required by the machine driven is transmitted by the coupling which is designed to absorb possible overloads without passing these on to the driving machine.

The selection graph should be used for a preliminary choice of the Henuid hydrodynamic coupling. For installation please contact our Application Engineering department, in order to conrm selection of the ideal size and constructive form for the drive. In combination with a simple and inexpensive electric induction motor Henuid hydrodynamic couplings offer a vast eld of applications, permitting start-ups without acceleration resistance and reaching operating rotation quickly and at a low power consumption, as opposed to systems without start-up protection. At conclusion of the acceleration process and keeping in mind the couplings low slippage factor, only the torque effectively necessary for the functioning of the machine driven will have been required from the electric motor.

HENFLUID coupling type H...

This is the basic assembly of Henuid couplings without retarding chamber, used for large start-up cycles and with limitation of maximum start-up torque by up to 180% of nominal torque, and low inertia. It is recommended for protecting the system from vibrations and overloads. Its principal uses are for bucket wheels, excavators, mixers, etc.

Type H-R and H-RR HENFLUID coupling

Conguration H-R is with simple retarding chamber used for large inertia systems which require limitation of the maximum start-up torque of up to 160% of nominal torque. Conguration H-RR is with elongated retarding chamber used for large inertia systems which require limitation of maximum start-up torque by up to 140% of nominal torque. As shown in the graph, the resulting positive acceleration torque is sufcient for the electric motor to quickly reach its asynchronous rotation and thus present ideal conditions to help accelerating the machine driven, job which is now taken over by the coupling. Henuid hydrodynamic couplings also provide oil ow control between the retarding chamber simple or elongated and the operating chamber by means of calibrated oil ow mechanisms, permitting various combinations of oil outow x acceleration time x torque limitation, optimizing the startup conditions for all drive types. They are used for belt conveyors, chain conveyors, centrifuges, mills, machines with great inertia, etc.

Features Type H-RRA HENFLUID coupling

This type features an elongated retarding chamber and auxiliary start-up chamber. When using type A auxiliary start-up chambers, it is possible to remove at the moment of start-up a signicant quantity of oil initially contained in the operating chamber (rotors) of the hydrodynamic coupling, facilitating acceleration of the motor and providing for the system driven a start-up torque limitation of between 95% and 120% of the electric motors nominal torque. Upon conclusion of acceleration of the electric motor, the RR elongated retarding chamber restores to the working chamber the oil volume previously removed on start-up by the auxiliary chamber A, re-establishing operating conditions of the hydrodynamic coupling. The oil outow rate from the rotors to the auxiliary start-up chamber at the beginning of acceleration of the electric motor is many times higher than the outow provided by the passage valves; these can be regulated through the combination of graduated apertures, in accordance with the start-up conditions of every equipment in particular. The principal function of the auxiliary start-up chamber A is to provide maximum start-up torque relief for the drive systems that use medium and high tension short circuit motors and cage rotors, permitting that these motors accelerate without load. Special attention should be given to the category N simple cage rotor electric motors which show high performance in asynchronous rotation with low initial start-up torque. Type HLE-RRA Henuid hydrodynamic couplings are recommended for large inertia drive systems, especially inclined or not inclined long distance belt conveyors, with simple or multiple drive, where the effects of transient tensions of the belts are to be eliminated; these tensions occur during the so-called transition period, i.e. from the belts stationary position at start-up to the complete acceleration of the system. It is observed in practice that a conveyor belt is not a rigid system or a constant torque machine, in view of the known proles of speed variation during its acceleration. These variations are originated by the generation of shock waves stemming from the natural speed difference between the top and bottom end of the conveyor which work at deferred operating speeds due to the belt exibility. The

frequency and magnitude of the shock waves depends on the ta/tu ratio, where ta is the torque variation transferred by the drive during the acceleration period, and tu is the oscillation time of low belt speeds (see gure below). Considering that tu cannot be changed because it depends on the belt type and length, the frequency and intensity of the shock waves is directly related to ta, i.e. evolution time of acceleration torque of the system. Therefore, the longer the time of start-up torque increase, the lower the effect of the shock waves on the system.
