Dear Friend,
This Annual Report initiates our 20th anniversary year we were born in 1992 under the guiding arm of the Cleveland Foundation. Throughout the past two decades, the Community Foundation has achieved growth, given generously, and matured as an organization. The best way to examine and celebrate these twenty years is to reflect on the many individuals who have created and governed the Foundation as well as on the countless persons whose lives have been changed and benefited by our work. This Annual Report is about those people. Our donors are the true creators of this Foundation. Their tangible generosity and charitable commitments have resulted in our current 280 funds a truly inspiring, permanent community resource. The Community Foundation has been blessed from the outset with exemplary leadership. The first distribution committees members were accomplished community leaders, and their successors have shown the same level of dedication and community knowledge. Combine knowledgeable leadership with significant resources and the result has been thousands of charitable grants over the years. Some of those grants are featured in this Report. It is overwhelming to try to imagine all at once the positive consequences of our twenty years of grantmaking creating opportunity, encouraging healthy living, and enhancing lives in Findlay and Hancock County. This Report also continues our accountability to our community. In 2011, we received $1,397,704 in gifts and 13 new funds were established. Our investments decreased 4 %, continuing to follow the overall economic volatility. With a spending policy based on rolling quarter averages, despite the downturn we were still able to grant more than $2.1 million to local nonprofits; supporting our community in a time of its greatest need.
Thank you for your constant support and trust. As we honor our mission, we are ready to address the changing philanthropic needs of the generations ahead to improve our community and the lives of its citizens. As we celebrate the occasion of the Community Foundations 20th anniversary, I look forward to the next 20 years and believe they will be even more productive.

Gr ant Highlights
Carol Metzger-Sturgeon, the new executive director of Cancer Patient Services, wanted to be able to offer her clients counseling to help them cope with the emotional toll of their disease. Cancer patients who learn how to manage their stress and develop a positive outlook have a higher rate of survival, says Carol. Through the Schneider Circle, Carols nonprofit colleagues offered assistance. They introduced her to Dr. Michelle Clinger, a breast cancer survivor and psychologist. Cancer Patient Services teamed up with Century Health to offer Clingers services to its clients. The Findlay-Hancock County Community Foundation (the Community Foundation) stepped up with a three-year, $100,000 grant to support the partnership. Without the Schneider Circle, Carol might still be searching for a way to help her clients and their family members. The Schneider Circle, made up of 12 local nonprofit agencies, is a circle of strength for Hancock County. The program builds synergy and stability among agencies that provide vital services to the community. The program inspired us to get out of our silos, said John Urbanski, director of the Hancock County Agency on Aging. We are building trusting relationships and working collaboratively for the betterment of Hancock County.
The recent economic downturn served as the catalyst for the Schneider Circle program. The Community Foundation provided emergency financial assistance to help several agencies weather the financial storm. But Foundation staffers recognized the need for agencies to build their capacity for the future. We wanted to give them tools to become self sustaining, said Julie Brown, the Community Foundation program officer. We wanted good agencies to reach for greatness. The Schneider Circle is funded through a two-year, $98,914 grant from the Madeline T. Schneider Fund at the Community Foundation. The program is named in honor of Madeleine Schneider, who upon her death left an endowed gift of $25 million to the Community Foundation. We felt naming this important program after her was a wonderful way to honor her legacy, said Julie. In a competitive application process, the Community Foundation selected 12 local agencies to participate in the Schneider Circle. All circle members serve an important role in the community. They are the Alzheimers Association, Northwest Ohio Chapter; American Red Cross, Hancock County Chapter; Camp Fire USA Northwest Ohio Council; Cancer Patient Services; Century Health; Chopin Hall; Findlay Hope House for the Homeless; Hancock Christian Clearing House; Hancock County Agency on Aging; Open Arms Domestic Violence and Date Rape Crisis Center; The Arts Partnership; and Youth for Christ. The Schneider Circle program brings national experts in fundraising, leadership, strategic planning, organizational effectiveness, and more, right to Findlay. These talented consultants work one-on-one with all 12 Schneider Circle members. Several agencies include board members, employees and volunteers in the valuable training sessions. My agencys budget certainly doesnt
allow for training or outside consultants, said Carol. The Schneider Circle has opened up exciting new insights and opportunities for us. A leadership forum serves as the centerpiece of the program. Each quarter, the executive leaders of the 12 Schneider Circle agencies meet to share best practices, brainstorm ideas, and discuss community issues. Theyve built strong relationships, learning to work together to improve their offerings to the community. Coming together to share ideas and resources has been amazing, said Marti Price, executive director of C.H.O.P.I.N. Hall. Our collaboration is helping us to work smarter as a united team of nonprofits. The Schneider Circle program transformed the uncertainty and hardship of the economic recession into an opportunity to strengthen Hancock Countys nonprofits. We are all becoming better at what we do, and thats having a dramatic impact on the community, said John.
Renewal of Hope
Gr ant Highlights
Martin Luther King, Jr., once said: We must accept finite disappointments, but never lose infinite hope. Sue Lehman sees hopelessness every day in the eyes of her clients. Sue, the SSI Ohio specialist at Findlay Hope House for the Homeless, Inc., regularly encounters individuals who are destitute, homeless and physically or mentally ill. Theyve lost hope because they believe no one cares. How do they get hope back? Sue asked, rhetorically. Hope is born when a beaten down attitude is counteracted with positive information conveyed by someone who cares. An individual then starts to realize that things can be different, that their life can be better. Sue cares about her clients and strives to give them positive information in the form of financial assistance. She meets with homeless individuals, or those at risk for homelessness, and guides them through the complicated and lengthy process of applying for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Social Security Disability Income (SSDI). Matthew, who was living in a van parked at a Findlay superstore, was one client Sue helped. Health issues and repeated surgeries had exacerbated Matthews mental health condition, leaving him unable to hold down a job. He felt broken because he couldnt provide even the basic necessities for his wife and four children who were staying at the Hope House shelter.
According to Sue, individuals like Matthew simply dont have the capacity to complete SSI or SSDI applications on their own. Stressed and vulnerable, often times with no phone or address, they are disconnected from society. The thick paperwork and involved application process seem to be insurmountable obstacles to them. They need someone to advocate for them and encourage them, Sue explained. Matthew did not trust Sue at first and thought he was wasting his time. Through her dedication to his case, she proved to him she truly cared. She spent long hours researching his life story and gathering the necessary documentation from medical doctors, psychiatrists and family members to clearly demonstrate his need. Her hard work paid off. Matthews applications for SSI and SSDI were approved, giving him and his family a substantial back payment and a small stream of monthly income for housing, food and utilities. When you have nothing, even a little bit opens doors, said Sue. Matthew no longer worries as much about providing for his family. His wife enrolled in college and his four children have a brighter future. His burden was lifted and his faith in mankind restored, said Sue. It was a total paradigm shift for him and he felt overwhelmed with gratitude. Sue helps between 60 to 75 Hancock County residents apply for SSI or SSDI each year. Her clients, who are carefully screened, struggle with a wide-range
of physical and mental conditions, such as cancer, heart disease, schizophrenia and bi-polar disorder. Sue enjoys an outstanding success rate with her clients; approximately 70 percent of her applications are approved by the Social Security Administration, compared to just 15 percent nationwide. SSDI payments average around $900 per month, while SSI payments average around $698 per month. Although its a small amount, it could mean the difference between living under a bridge or in a warm apartment, said Sue. Hope House also connects clients with affordable housing, ongoing medical care, and other community agencies that can provide support. When necessary, Hope House assigns clients a payee to administer back awards and monthly income to ensure stability. The Hope Houses SSI/SSDI program reduces the number of homeless and at-risk people in Findlay and Hancock County, providing increased community stability. The program brings over $1 million dollars of new money into Findlay and surrounding communities each year. This money, which is used for rent, food, and other living expenses, helps to stimulate the local economy. Sue and her clients like Matthew appreciate the Findlay-Hancock County Community Foundation for providing a three-year grant of $95,900 to support the Hope Houses SSI/SSDI program. Not a day goes by that my heart isnt encouraged by the people I serve, said Sue. There is no greater gift than seeing hope renewed.
Focus on Health
Gr ant Highlights
A community filled with healthy and happy people is a great place to call home. A healthy community is a vibrant and productive community, said Barbara Wilhelm, deputy health commissioner for the Findlay City Health Department. Barb leads a coalition of community organizations committed to improving the health of all Hancock County residents, from newborns to centenarians. The coalition recently conducted a comprehensive Community Health Assessment, which was funded by several coalition members and a oneyear, $22,000 grant from the Findlay-Hancock County Community Foundation. The Community Health Assessment produced invaluable statistics on the physical, mental and social health of Hancock County residents. The assessment revealed, for example, that heart disease is the #1 killer in Hancock County; that 62 percent of residents are overweight or obese; and that 34 percent of residents suffer with arthritis. The reputable Hospital Council of Northwest Ohio administered the Community Health Assessment, surveying three population segments in the county children (birth to age 11); youth (aged 12 to 18); and adults. The surveys included core questions that enable Hancock Countys results to be compared with other Ohio counties, as well as state
and national data. In addition, the surveys included questions on Hancock Countys unique concerns, such as flooding. The coalition posted the assessment results on the City of Findlays website (www.findlayohio.com) for the general public to access. The Community Health Assessment brought to light issues like poverty and bullying that lurk in the shadows. Many residents might be surprised to learn that 13 percent of Hancock County adults needed assistance providing the basic necessities for their family in the past year. Parents might be dismayed to find out that 41 percent of Hancock County youth reported being bullied. Those living outside the flood zone might not realize that 17 percent of residents are still feeling negative effects from the 2007 flood. Awareness is often the first step in making a difference, said Barb. If an issue doesnt impact us directly, we are sometimes not aware it even exists. Using the assessment results, the coalition is working collaboratively to identify priorities and plan strategies to improve peoples lives. The coalitions members include The Ohio State University Extension; Blanchard Valley Hospital; Blanchard Valley Health Foundation; Findlay City Schools and Hancock County Schools; the Findlay and the Hancock County Health Departments, Hancock County Alcohol Drug Addiction and Mental Health Services (ADAMHS) Board, the Findlay-Hancock County Community Foundation, United Way, Hancock County Family First Council, and more.
Health issues cross boundaries and often impact more than one organization or segment of the population. A child lacking basic nutrition, for example, may perform poorly at school and become a frequent visitor in the hospitals ER. Teenagers who are texting while driving make the countys roadways more dangerous for everyone. Multifaceted problems need to have a multifaceted approach, said Barb. While many community groups can benefit from the assessment data, its wonderful to have this coalition of community leaders working together to address problems. They each bring unique perspectives and ideas to the table. The Community Health Assessment also provides the hard data that coalition members and other community groups need to successfully compete for grants. The assessment shows what is happening in our community, said Barb. It enables organizations to write more effective grants backed with reliable and relevant statistics. Going forward, the coalition plans to repeat the Community Health Assessment every five years to identify concerns, plan improvements, and measure results. The assessment brings everything down to a grassroots level, said Barb. It gets us in the cycle of continuous improvement as we strive to enhance the quality of life for all residents.

When L. Dale Dorney first visited the offices of the Cleveland Foundation in the early 1970s, he arrived unannounced in his usual business attire. During his conversation with foundation staff, Mr. Dorney made quite an impression with his sophisticated knowledge of the worlds of finance and law, and his creative vision of public giving. They had no way of knowing that day whether he had five hundred or five thousand dollars to give. But his keen understanding and passion for the enduring spirit of philanthropy were easily recognized. Most people who encountered L. Dale Dorney during his lifetime were unaware of the unique life and industrious nature that lay behind his quaint, unpretentious exterior. A private man, he lived the majority of his 90 years in his native Findlay, Ohio. Although he made his mark as an astute businessman and wise investor, he always down played his material wealth. In fact, few people knew the extent to which he had pursued his life long quest of building substantial personal assets and establishing a trust that would serve the people of his community for many generations to come. In 1976, he left the Cleveland Foundation a $2.2 million dollar bequest dedicated to improving the quality of life in Findlay and Hancock County. He hoped that this gift might one day form the nucleus of a community foundation. His dream came to fruition in 1992 when the Findlay-Hancock County Community Foundation was established as a supporting organization of the Cleveland Foundation. On February 28, 1999, the Findlay-Hancock County Community Foundation became an independent entity and the Dorney Fund assets designated for Hancock County were returned to our community. What started as one mans generous gift to his community, has been further expanded by local residents. Today, the FindlayHancock County Community Foundation is one of 69 community foundations in Ohio and more than 700 community foundations nationwide. Since 1976, the Dorney Fund has provided more than $11.3 million dollars to support the work of the Community Foundation and other local nonprofit agencies. And through the power of endowment, where gifts are invested and earnings are used to make grants that address community needs, Mr. Dorneys gift will keep giving, and growing, forever. Thats the power of a charitable fund with the Community Foundation. Your good work far outlasts your lifetime.

A rain garden was built at The Family Center during the summer of 2011. A rain garden is a garden of native shrubs, perennials, and flowers planted in a small depression, which is generally formed on a natural slope. It is designed to temporarily hold and soak in rainwater runoff that flows from roofs, driveways, patios or lawns. Rain gardens are effective in removing up to 90% of nutrients and chemicals and up to 80% of sediments from the rainwater runoff. Compared to a conventional lawn, rain gardens allow for 30% more water to soak into the ground. The rain garden was funded partially by a grant from the Ivan and Dorothy Gorr Fund of the Community Foundation.

The Community Foundation is honored to carry out the charitable interests of our donors. We are deeply grateful to the hundreds of individuals who have established more than 280 funds and to the thousands of individuals who have contributed to them. Together, we are making a difference in our community. The following is a current list of the funds* donors have established at the Community Foundation. Many are endowments - permanent capital that will support local nonprofit organizations and their good works forever. You will notice that some funds are very flexible and can be used to address the ever-changing needs of our community, while other funds are very specific in their purpose. All of these funds share a commonality: they were established by people who want to support their community. * Donors who wish for their funds to remain anonymous are not listed in the Funds of the Foundation section. Indicates Seed Funds. See page 29 for more information. Indicates the first of that fund type to be established at the Community Foundation.

SEED FUNDS
How it works:
The Seed Fund Program can be used to establish any type of endowment fund: Unrestricted Funds, Field of Interest Funds, Agency Funds, Designated Funds, Donor Advised Funds, and Scholarship Funds. Donors make an initial contribution of at least $1,000 to establish the Seed Fund and then have up to three years to build the fund to the required minimum endowment level. Minimum endowment levels vary according to fund type. A funding plan must be submitted at the time the Seed Fund is established that includes a detailed, reasonable approach to raising the required fund minimum by a specific date that is no more than three years from the date the fund is established. Once a seed fund reaches the minimum endowment level, the fund matures into an active charitable endowment fund. Once a fund has reached the minimum endowment level, distributions can be made to the causes and charities of the donors choice. Our current annual spending policy is 4.5% of the average of the ending market values for the previous 12 quarters. Contact the Community Foundation office for more information.

Our Donors
We extend our deepest gratitude to our donors, who, in 2011, entrusted a total of $1.4 million in gifts to establish new funds and grow existing funds of the Community Foundation. These individuals, families, businesses, and organizations have helped ensure that the gift of a helping hand will be there when and where it is needed in our community. We work diligently to ensure that all names are spelled correctly in our annual report. If we need to make a correction to our database, please contact our office at 419-425-1100 or sjoseph@community-foundation. com.

Successful applications typically address problems to be solved or opportunities to be seized in the Hancock County area. Grant requests should include some or all of the following elements:
Programs serving Hancock County residents. Programs that make a substantial difference in the quality of community life. Programs that avoid duplication of services. Programs that demonstrate measurable outcomes. Programs that help nonprofit organizations build capacity and become more effective. Programs that include financial and other strategic commitments from other funding organizations. Programs that expand meaningful civic engagements and build social capital. Programs that address prevention as well as remediation. Programs that acknowledge and respect diversity and help bridge differences among individuals, organizations, and communities. Organizations with fiscal soundness and plans for continuing the program in the future. Organizations that demonstrate sustainability. Organizations that facilitate collaboration among relevant groups. Organizations that use or expand upon demonstrated and documented best practices. Organizations that leverage change in the capacity of community-wide systems rather than individual organizations.
* Grants that include a technology component MUST show a compelling need and strong connection to increasing agency sustainability for agency grants and increasing student achievement for educational grants. ** Capital projects must help meet a compelling community need; advance Community Foundation priorities; and offer broad social benefits. When the Community Foundation does participate in a capital project, support is contingent on funding from other sources. Payment will not be authorized until the organization has raised a significant percentage of its total dollar goal.
HancockREADS Fund
HancockREADS Fund
HancockREADS, founded in 2001, is an initiative of the Community Foundation designed to ensure that individuals and families in Hancock County enjoy the benefits of literacy. Many individuals in Hancock County have difficulty reading, writing, or using basic math skills necessary in everyday life. Our mission is to ensure that these individuals can find the help they need to become successful; and to ensure the current and future success of our children.
CommunityREAD
CommunityREAD is a month-long community event that encourages reading and promotes the benefits of literacy. Each year, a different book is chosen and read by community members during the month of March. Various events are planned throughout the month at the library, schools, churches, bookstores, and throughout the community. CommunityREAD also highlights and raises funds for the HancockREADS grant program which supports literacy-based programs in Hancock County. Every dollar donated to the HancockREADS endowment fund is matched with 50 cents by the Community Foundation.

Still Alice
The 2012 CommunityREAD selection was Still Alice by Lisa Genova. The New York Times best-selling novel is about a 50-year-old womans descent into early-onset Alzheimers disease. Alice is a psychology professor at Harvard when she starts experiencing moments of forgetting and confusion. She at first attributes these signs to normal aging, too much stress, not enough sleep, and so on. But as things get worse, she eventually sees a neurologist and learns that she has early-onset Alzheimers. As Alice loses her ability to rely on her own thoughts and memories and as she loses her cerebral life at Harvard where shed placed all her worth and identity, she is forced to answer questions like Who am I now? and How do I matter? As the disease worsens and continues to steal pieces of what shed always thought of as herself, we see her discover that she is more than what she can remember. Genova visited Findlay during CommunityREAD month. As part of her visit, Genova spoke to students and visited with community members in addition to the featured speaking event. Previous CommunityREAD authors and books are listed to the right. All of the authors except Harper Lee visited Findlay as part of the CommunityREAD event.

The Hancock Education Fund is a cooperative grant program established in 2001 between the Community Foundation, Findlay Rotary, and Findlay Rotarys Golden Apple Teachers. The fund provides grant dollars to promote classroom learning and to provide teachers with resources that encourage learning activities. An advisory committee comprised of members from each of these three organizations meets semi-annually to review grant proposals. What is unique to the Hancock Education Fund is that grantseekers are asked to focus on what is being called 21st Century Learning skills. These skills include cultural awareness and diversity, creative thinking, technological savvy, interpersonal communication skills and many others that education experts believe are necessary to prepare students for success in a global economy.
James Arnosky
Intermediate students in Findlay City and Hancock County Schools are exposed to fiction books frequently, but seldom is nonfiction an option or even available in a class setting. James Arnosky, a visiting author who is nationally known for writing and illustrating excellent science/nature nonfiction, is a wonderful resource for exposing students to the rich genre of nonfiction. He has written how-to books about fishing, identifying birds or animal tracks, and how to draw from nature. His most popular character is Crinkleroot, a grandfatherly woodsman who introduces students to interesting animal facts. James Arnosky visited Findlay and spoke at the Mazza Fall Conference in November 2011. While visiting, he also spoke at Wilson Vance, Lincoln Elementary and to county students. Arnosky talked about his books, drew pictures, sang and played his guitar and told a few adventures of his experience while researching in the outdoors. His main goal with his books and presentations is to excite students about the glories of nature. Through this grant, students were able to read some of his books prior to his visit.

ECLIPSe Partnership
ECLIPSe Partnership
The ECLIPSe (Emerging Community Leaders Investing in Philanthropic Service) Partnership promotes youth philanthropy, integrates service-learning into the community, increases youth civic engagement, and expands the number of youth-adult partnerships in Hancock County. The partnership includes a youth council made up of Hancock County youth in the eighth grade through college. During the 2010 and 2011 school year, students from the ECLIPSe youth grantmaking council and the Mayors Teen Advisory Council merged and became ENGAGE. This new group will remain under the ECLIPSe Partnership umbrella. The mission of the group also remains the same.
In addition to participating in their own servicelearning projects, ENGAGE awards grant funds for other youth-driven service-learning projects in Hancock County. ENGAGE reviews grant applications, meets and interviews potential grantees, and makes funding decisions based on established criteria. Youth participate as equal voting members with adult partners. They also facilitate and run their own meetings and activities. Service-learning in Hancock County impacts approximately 10,000 youth annually. Since 2002, the youth council has awarded grants to 60 projects totaling nearly $52,000 to support local youth-driven service-learning projects.

ECLIPSe Parnership
ECLIPSe Partnership
ECLIPSe presented at the Ohio School Boards Association Capital Conference and at the Forging New Links Conference in Columbus in order to educate stakeholders across the state about the power of service-learning. ECLIPSe also hosted the Train the Trainer ServiceLearning Workshop in January 2011 at the Family Center for local educators and nonprofit organizations.
merger process was finalized in the spring of 2011. The name of the new youth group is ENGAGE. The ECLIPSe Partnership will remain the umbrella organization of the new youth group, and the students will remain committed to advancing service-learning, youth philanthropy and civic engagement in Hancock County.
ENGAGE
In the fall of 2010, the ECLIPSe youth grantmakers and the Mayors Teen Advisory Council youth started a process of merging the two groups. There was a considerable amount of overlap in the mission of the two organizations as well as some overlap in membership. This

An active Board of Trustees oversees the financial assets of the Community Foundation, and works with our Finance & Investment Committee and independent investment consultants to exercise high standards of management and fiscal stewardship. Our current investment performance reflects the continued U.S. and global economic volatility. We work closely with our investment advisors, monitoring the markets and keeping in mind the Community Foudations long-term goals for investment performance. Our portfolio is highly diversified, and our asset allocation reflects the wisdom of an investment committee and advisors with many years of investment experience. In troubling times, we need to be prudent, realistic, and most importantly, patient. That means keeping our diciplined, long-term perspective. We cannot predict when and how the market will improve, but based on our superior investment performance over the long term, we are confident that the funds you have entrusted to us will continue to grow over time, providing grants to help the causes important to us all.

Since 1992, thousands of individuals have made gifts totaling $75,110,252* to the Community Foundation to benefit Findlay and Hancock County forever. To each and every one of our donors, thank you!
The Findlay-Hancock County Community Foundation will improve the quality of life in Hancock County through collaborative leadership, responsible grantmaking, and the development of philanthropic giving.
*A percentage of each funds value is available to grant each year; the endowed principal is invested to grow and fund future grants.
Ways to Give
Stock, Bonds, and Mutual Funds. Appreciated stock, bonds, and mutual funds can make an economical choice when making a charitable gift. You make the gift at a lower cost basis and enjoy double tax savings by avoiding capital gains and receiving a charitable contribution based on the securitys full market value. Matching Gift. Matching gifts can more than double a gift if your employer (and/or your spouses employer) has such a program. All that is needed is the appropriate form from the employer. Charitable Gift Annuity and Charitable Remainder Trust. You can make a gift of cash, marketable securities, or property to the Community Foundation now, get immediate tax benefits, and ensure that you or a loved one receive income payments for life. Charitable Lead Trust. You can place cash or property into a trust that provides income to the Community Foundation for a set number of years, after which the remainder may be transferred back to you or your heirs. Real Estate and Personal Property. Residences, vacation homes, farms, and valuable items, such as art, make wonderful charitable gifts and enjoy significant tax savings. Retained Life Estate. You can make a gift of your home, farm, or vacation home, obtain an immediate tax deduction, and still continue to use the property for as long as you wish. Only after you no longer need the property will the Community Foundation assume the usual ownership rights. Bequest. A bequest made through a will or living trust allows you to designate a portion of your estate to the Community Foundation without drawing from assets during your lifetime. Retirement Funds, IRAs, and Life Insurance. You can name the Community Foundation as a direct or contingency beneficiary of all or a portion of your retirement funds, IRAs, life insurance policies, and other assets.
