Theoretical Framework The huge shift in the medium of communication in a short span of time dramatically changed the process

of news gathering for media practitioners and news delivery to the community. The introduction of the internet to journalism bred to different factors attached to the communication process. Thus, the researchers decided to evaluate the efficiency of the traditional print journalism and online journalism according to 1) public service, 2) autonomy, 3) coverage, 4) ethics and 5) readership. These elements are chosen by the researchers because they are all found in both media and are standard, principal journalism factors determined by (insert researcher here) In terms of public service, both online and print journalism share equal roles as watchdog of the government. Both media play a vital role in contributing to national development by maintaining objectivity, transparency, truthfulness, among others. Online journalists and newspaper journalists are expected to remain autonomous from private and public entities as to prevent biases from appearing in the news. The principle of independence is, in fact, practiced by all forms of media since journalists are expected to be free from any obligations to any specific party other than the public. In terms of coverage and treatment, online journalism and print journalism have few similarities and differences. Some elements present in the traditional medium can be found in works of online journalists. In online journalism, news values like timeliness, impact, proximity, controversy, prominence and currency observed by newspaper industries are also followed. Online news are a mixture of hard, straightforward news and soft, feature news much like its counterpart in print. Precision of grammar and spelling is important. Online journalism is different from print journalism in the technical aspect. News published on the internet is short, detailed and substantive. It is written in conversational tone. While newspapers print the news in text with photos, online journalism uses text, photos and audiovisual content. Interaction and immediate feedback is a unique feature in online journalism. Most news websites put comment sections on their pages to allow readers to express how the news made them feel. Events are given blow-by-blow accounts and are updated even as the event is happening. Online news journals utilize live feeds when covering huge events such as award ceremonies like the Oscars or religious rites like the recent Papal elections or the Sinulog festival. Whereas, news in print are dubbed as yesterdays news because they only publish once, daily. Internet news writers still follow the standard code of ethics but there are several problems. First, the accessibility of news published online increases the risks of acts of

plagiarism, whether direct and indirect, intentional and unintentional. Students, researchers, and even fellow journalists fall prey to using readily-available material in their work without proper attribution. Second, comments sections may affect the way readers interpret or perceive the subject matter. This effect results to loss of credibility and objectivity. Lastly, any mistake done by any online journalist greatly affects the dignity of the profession and further aggravates the stigma attached to online journalists. Many readers, especially ones who are unfamiliar or distrusting to the internet, see newspapers as a more credible source of news. In terms of readership, online journalists use social networking sites to tweet about newsworthy events. They provide links to their news and put Share buttons on the pages of their news articles to widen readership. Users can subscribe to a certain online news agency and get notified for recent news posted. Newspapers have a limited readership. One newspaper can be passed at least 5 times to different readers.
