1. Introduction
Designofrectangularandcircularcolumnswithsymmetricreinforcementiscommonlyperformedusinginteraction
diagramsthathavebeendevelopedbyACI

.IngeneralthesecolumnsarecharacterizedastypesR,E,L,C,andSas
shownbelow. Ofthese,columnsoftypeEaretheleastinterestingastheyaredesignedtocarryaneccentricload
witheccentricitythatisparalleltothereinforcementandthusresultsintheleasteffectivedesign. Thisisnottosay
howeverthattheyarenotused,astheycouldrepresentacolumnthatisunderstrongflexureinonedirection(L)and
weakflexureintheotherdirection(E).Asmallbutusefulsubsetofinteractionchartsispresentedinyourtextbookin
