The grid isolation system procured from M/s L & T , Mysore has been installed in Main Substation.

The purpose of this system is to isolate / island our captive generators during the following grid disturbances:1. Grid Power failure 2. Heavy fault in the grid 3. Sustained low frequency in the grid The grid isolation scheme has the following relays:1. 2. Power Management Relay ( MW 33) Multifunction frequency relay ( UFD 34)

The protection features available in the above relays are given below:Power Management Relay (MW 33): This relay has two stages of Reverse power protection with a setting range between 1.52 MW and 152 MW and two stages of under frequency protection with a setting range between 40 Hz and 60 Hz. Both the Reverse power and under frequency protections can be combined to operate with a time delay between 0 and 100 sec. in steps of 0.1 sec. Multifunction Frequency Relay (UFD 34): This relay has four stages of under frequency protections and two stage of rate of change of frequency (df/dt) protections with a time delay between 0 and 100 seconds in steps of 0.1 sec. Both the under frequency and the df/dt protections can also be combined to operate with a time delay. This relay also has two stages of under voltage protections with a time delay element. The above relays are be used to protect our system against the following grid disturbances. 1) Reverse power protection: The power management relay can be used to protect our system against reverse power flow to the grid during the Grid power failure. During the grid disturbances, if there is a reverse power flow of 1.52 MW and the grid

frequency falls to 47. 6 Hz, the grid incoming feeders at SWB 11 (MSS 11 kV panel) will get tripped in 1.0 sec. If the reverse power flow is less than 1.52 MW, the grid incomers will not be tripped and the captive generation can be adjusted to avoid reverse power flow and CPP can be allowed to float with grid. To monitor the reverse power flow to grid, grid power signal is given to Ammonia control room and suitable alarms can be generated at different power flow in the grid.

2) Frequency disturbances protection: The multifunction frequency relay can be used to protect our system either by isolating the grid incoming feeders or by splitting our network into independent sub-networks during the frequency disturbances in the grid. In the first option, the grid incoming feeders at SWB 11 will be tripped for the under frequency protection combined with df/dt protection. For this, the first stage of the under frequency is set at 47.0 Hz for 1 sec. combined with a df/dt setting at 0.8 Hz/sec. If the grid frequency falls at a rate of 0.8 Hz / sec. and falls below 47.0 Hz at the same rate, the grid incomers will get tripped in 1 sec. The second stage of under frequency protection is set 47.6 Hz for 2 seconds to trip Phase-II feeders and the third stage is set at 47.6 Hz for 3 seconds to delink TG-I and Ammonia. Therefore, if the system frequency reduces to 47.6 Hz and maintains for 2 seconds, both the Phase-II feeders will get tripped. In Phase-II, TG-III and GT will be feeding to the phase-II plants independently. Similarly, if the under frequency persists for 3 seconds at 47.6Hz, the Bus coupler breaker in SWB 11 panel (MSS 11 KV panel) will get tripped and TG I will be feeding to Ammonia and CPP loads. Grid will be independently feeding to Urea Plant through Urea II feeder connected at SWB 11 B (Refer Annexure-II for 11KV distribution) . The comprehensive isolation scheme is given in Annexure-I

The comprehensive isolation scheme is given below:

Frequency below 47.6Hz, Reverse power flow more than 1.52MW and 1.0 sec. Grid isolation OR Under frequency (47.0 Hz) and df/dt (0.8Hz/s) for 1 sec.

Frequency below 47.6Hz, for 2 secs.

Isolation of Phase-II

Frequency below 47.6Hz, for 3 secs.
