Barangay Gulod : Community Profile Barangay Gulod is part of Talim Island in Binangonan, Rizal.

It is a small barangay bounded by Barangay Kaytome in the north, Barangay Sapang in the south, Mt. Tagapo in the east and Laguna Lake in the west. It measures 704,537 square meters, and is divided into three zones or purok. It is an elevated community along the shoreline of the lake. The roads which are uphill and downhill direction are cemented but very narrow that only one tricycle can pass. Most of the houses are made of hollow blocks and light materials like pawid and bamboo. Most households use chopped woods in cooking, but still use liquified gas. It has a deep well water system and reached by electricity. But then street lights are not enough to light the whole barangay. It has two dumpsites one is situated few blocks away from the Barangay Hall and the other is a minor dumpsite in a vacant lot in Libis. But people are fond of burning their wastes and garbages. There are no hospitals in the area and in other areas of Talim Island. Children go to elementary school in the nearby Barangay Kaytome and high school in Barangay Janosa.

Objectives We, Third Year sociology students from Polytechnic University of the Philippines, in line with our curriculum that includes Community Organizing, a subject, as the name implies, engaging and organizing a community for a betterment of the people, are launching a project that would engage people of Brgy. Gulod, Binangonan, Rizal to promote a clean environment. It's been a culture of the PUP Sociology Department to have their Community Organizing in Talim, it has become a PUP Community since then. Our main objective is to promote a clean and green community in Brgy. Gulod, Talim Island in a long run. A program that would lasts and sustainable by all the people within the community.

Waste Management Situation The problem on waste management is very much evident as plastic bags, wrappers, plastic bottles, and disposable diapers were found in the canals and in the lakeshore. The Barangay Council has taken initiatives to address this issue. Trash bins were placed in the different corners of the streets and in front of some houses. The community also practices the cleaning of their surroundings as they developed the logo, Tapat Ko, Linis Ko. These initiatives have minimized the trash scattered on the streets and canals but the waste segregation was not fully implemented. Barangay Gulod has put up a temporary Material Recovery Facility (MRF) to implement proper waste segregation/management. The Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) held an orientation and seminar/workshop to help improve the waste reduction in the community. However, there was a few turn out of attendees, so it was presumed that not everybody was aware of the waste management program.

Concept Greenpeace, in our knowledge is a non organizational, non profit, international environmental organization which aims a green and ecofriendly Earth for all the inhabitants. By that, we would like to invite you, as a full pledge environment activist, to help us promote an environment friendly community. Talim is such a wonderful place and we would like to make it that way for the next generation to enjoy it. We would like to launch a

project that would educate people on how to recycle and to have a waste management.

As such, we would like to ask your support in giving a long term program on how to recycle and manage their waste properly to promote a clean environment. A program that would engage people, and have their minds all set with the value and significance of an environment friendly community. We are self sustaining our projects, and might not be able to provide a big amount of amount of money, however we have been asking the support of the Barangay Gulod, Talim Island to help us in our budget, and we're more than willing to help by all means possible to make this project happen. We believe Greenpeace will be with us in making this project possible.
