Question 1:

The vibration in the vertical direction of an airplane and its wings can be modeled as a 3DOF system
with one mass corresponding to the right wing, one mass for the left wing and one mass for the
fuselage The stiffness connecting the three masses corresponds to that of the wing and is a function of
the modulus E of the wing. The equation of motion is:

c) Repeat parts a and b for the case when the airplane body weight is 10m instead of 4m. What
effect does it have on the response, and which design is better as to vibration?
d) If the damping matrix is taken to be C=(0.003)K, calculate the natural frequencies, mode
shapes and damping ratios

plane. Hence
each mass has two degree of freedom.
a) Derive the equation of motion. Write them in matrix form and calculate the eigenvalues and
eigenvectors for m=12 kg and k=150N/m.
b) Use the modal data to calculate the solution if the mass on the left is raised along the x-
direction exactly 0.01m and let go.
c) Find the point and transfer FRF of the system at the left mass in the X direction. Also the
cross FRF at the left mass due to force in the Y-direction. Draw FRFs in the magnitude/phase
and Nyquist forms for an appropriate frequency range.

the critical speeds taking gyroscopic effect into account. The disk weight is 120N and shaft
diameter is 50 mm. (you may idealize the system by applying equivalent stiffness of the shaft to
the disk and assuming that the shaft is rigid)
