Make a list of common fallacies and generalizations about: a. men f. reagaeton b. women g. secretaries c. police officers h. black people d. lawyers I. children e. teachers j. rocks Answer the following questions. Remember to give an answer with all your respect. a. Do you agree with the fallacy or generalization? Why? b. Is it true or false? c. How can you prove it? d. Have you ever used it (or them)? e. 2. Direct TV add The Direct TV ad has many fallacies. The first one is that there are packages starting at 19.99. The fine print clearly states that the price is for a limited time and in addition there are many other charges added to this amount. When you read the fine print it proves that the price is higher than what is stated. The statement of free HD on all your televisions is also a fallacy; HD is free only for three months. The only truth on the ad is that HBO and Max are free for three months. The intention of the ad is to convince people to buy a product that seems to be offering many benefits when the reality is that ninety percent of the ad is false advertisement. 3. Fallacies and generalizations: Men are better at regaetton than woman. Men that sing regaetton are all linked to drug dealing. All men in regaetton see women as sex objects. Women are better secretaries than men. Secretaries flirt with the bosses or are their mistresses. Secretaries are more likely to gossip in the office. Police officers are more likely to stop black people than white people. There is more police brutality against black people. Police officers fear project housing of black communities.

I do not agree with the generalizations or fallacies stated above because they are made up by society and have no statistical data to prove them. It is my personal opinion that many of these are made because there have been a small amount of cases associated with these incidents. Movies and sensationalist news broadcasting tend to mislead the general public. This serves to foster the belief in such fallacies and generalizations. The many fallacies regarding regaetton are started because negative incidents involving singers of this genre have been found involved in criminal activities. There are many singers who have a decent lifestyle and sing about positive themes. More recently there have been religious singers using the genre to attract younger generations to church. In the same sense there are many whose songs objectify women in lyrics and videos, but this does not mean that all of the singers follow this

pattern. It is because of negative exposure that people make regaetton generalizations. In regards to the work place, many Hollywood movies portray the seductive secretary as an ideal and usually have them involved with their bosses. I believe if a survey among the thousands of secretaries on our lsland of Puerto Rico is conducted we would find that only a small percentage may be involved with their bosses. Because secretaries handle a lot of the work load it is true that they have access to information and may be in a position to begin gossip. I doubt that the majority of secretaries gossip because the jobs on the Island are scarce and it is foolish to risk a job over gossip. The final generalizations stated about black people and the police is more related to social status in the United States than ethnic backgrounds. People living in poor areas are more likely to become involved in illegal activities. Minorities are groups of people who make up a large percentage of the poor communities. This not only includes blacks, but also latinos. Truly outnumbering police in their communities it is more than certain that police will try to establish order by force; creating the fallacy of police brutality against blacks. This can also be the rationale that explains why police interfere less with disturbances in projects if compared to the suburbs. Finally generalizations and fallacies are expressly that; false. They are made to explain the social changes we have seen through the years and attract attention to the negative information that sells newspapers and gives high ratings. There are good people in every profession and every race so my view is not to believe in them and judge each person and situation by their actions.

2. El anuncio de Direct TV tiene muchas falacias. La primera es que hay paquetes a partir de $19.99. La letra pequea dice claramente que el precio es por un tiempo limitado y adems hay muchas otras cargas aadidas a esta cantidad. Cuando se lee la letra pequea resulta que el precio es ms alto que lo que se afirma. La declaracin de alta densidad libre de todos sus televisores tambin es una falacia; HD es libre slo durante tres meses. La nica verdad en el anuncio es que HBO y Max son gratis durante tres meses. La intencin de la publicidad es convencer a la gente a comprar un producto que parece ofrecer muchos beneficios cuando la realidad es que el noventa por ciento de la publicidad es la publicidad falsa.

3. Falacias y generalizaciones: a. - Los hombres son mejores en regaetton que la mujer. - Los hombres que cantan regaetton estn vinculados a trfico de drogas. - Todos los hombres en regaetton ver a las mujeres como objetos sexuales.

Las mujeres son mejores que los hombres secretarios. Secretarios coquetear con los jefes o sus amantes. Secretarios tienen ms probabilidades de chismes en la oficina. Los oficiales de polica son ms propensos a dejar a los negros que los blancos. Hay ms brutalidad policial contra los negros. Los agentes de polica temen proyecto de vivienda de las comunidades negras.

4. No estoy de acuerdo con las generalizaciones o falacias mencionadas anteriormente ya que estn fabricadas por la sociedad y no tienen datos estadsticos para probarlo. Es mi opinin personal que muchos de estos estn hechos porque ha habido una pequea cantidad de casos asociados con estos incidentes. Pelculas y difusin de noticias sensacionalistas tienden a inducir a error al pblico en general. Esto sirve para fomentar la creencia en tales falacias y generalizaciones. Las falacias sobre regaetton se inici debido a incidentes negativos relacionados con cantantes de este gnero se han encontrado implicados en actividades delictivas. Hay muchos cantantes que tienen un estilo de vida decente y cantar sobre temas positivos. Ms recientemente ha habido cantantes religiosos que utilizan el gnero para atraer a las generaciones ms jvenes a la iglesia. En el mismo sentido hay muchos cuyas canciones objetivar las mujeres de letras y videos, pero esto no quiere decir que todos los cantantes siguen este patrn. Es debido a la exposicin negativa que la gente hace generalizaciones regaetton. En lo que respecta al lugar de trabajo, muchas pelculas de Hollywood retratar la secretaria seductora como un ideal y por lo general tienen que involucrarse con sus jefes. Creo que si una encuesta entre los miles de secretarias en nuestra lsla de Puerto Rico se lleva a cabo nos encontraramos con que slo un pequeo porcentaje pueden estar involucrados con sus jefes. Porque secretarios manejar una gran cantidad de la carga de trabajo es cierto que tienen acceso a la informacin y puede estar en condiciones de iniciar chismes. Dudo que la mayora de los secretarios de chismes porque los trabajos en la isla son escasos y es una locura arriesgarse a un trabajo ms chismes. Las generalizaciones finales declarado acerca de los negros y la polica est ms relacionada con el estatus social en los Estados Unidos de orgenes tnicos. Las personas que viven en las zonas pobres son ms propensos a involucrarse en actividades ilegales. Las minoras son grupos de personas que conforman un gran porcentaje de las comunidades pobres. Esto no slo incluye a los negros, sino tambin latinos. Verdaderamente superando en nmero a la polica en sus comunidades, es ms que seguro que la polica tratar de establecer el orden por la fuerza, la creacin de la falacia de la brutalidad policial contra los negros. Esto tambin puede ser la razn que explique por qu la

polica interfiere menos con los disturbios de los proyectos si se compara con los suburbios. Finalmente generalizaciones y las falacias son expresamente que, falsa. Se hacen para explicar los cambios sociales que hemos visto a travs de los aos y atraer la atencin sobre la informacin negativa que vende peridicos y da altas calificaciones. Hay gente buena en todas las profesiones y carreras vez en mi opinin no es creer en ellos y juzgar a cada persona y situacin de sus acciones.
