Gender Based Violence in Pakistan


Gender Based Violence (GBV) is a life-threatening protection issue mainly

affecting women and children in Pakistan. It is a gross violation of women's human rights.

The different forms of GBV in Pakistan:

Physical, sexual and domestic violence, Denial of resources, Murder, Forced prostitution, Burning & acid throwing, Psychological/emotional abuse, Forced and early marriage, Trafficking and abduction of women and children, Honor killings etc

Problem Statement
Lack of implementation of existing gender

responsive policies and laws, lack of sensitization of government officials, availability and access to national data on GBV and lack of political will. Need for legal aid for women and children to safeguard their rights. Lack of referral and protection mechanism for women GBV survivors Lack of participation of Youth in creating awareness on GBV issues

ADB pilot project Addressing Gender Based Violence in Pakistan


Goal o To contribute towards the reduction of Gender Based

Violence in Pakistan

o Project Focus: development of lawyers resource pool for providing free

legal aid to women GBV survivors youth participation for mitigating GBV and awareness raising about helpline in all 4 provinces and strengthening the referral mechanisms for women GBV survivors

Expected Impacts o Outcomes:


Protection mechanisms are effectively operating ad

available for GBV survivors and at risk women & girls.

o Outputs:
Increased participation of youth in identification

and raising awareness on GBV issues. Improved access and dissemination of information about available services to GBV survivors Strengthened networking and referral systems through capacity building and coordination amongst service providers, academia and media.

Project Approach
PROTECTION:

the victims

to develop gender activists by empowering youth, capacity building of the stakeholders, enforcing the implementation of the existing policies sensitizing government and different organizations about GBV.

Unique Feature
Development of Resource Pool:
o Establish resource pool of lawyers at national level to facilitate the

survivors of Gender based violence (GBV).

o The purpose of resource pool is to build a network of activist lawyers

who can provide services to the survivors of GBV.

o Selection of 50 lawyers for resource pool at Provincial headquarters. o Training will be provided to selected lawyers. o They will provide services women and girls survivors affected from

GBV

Target Beneficiaries

Women victims of violence & abuse, youth representatives, lawyers, the civil society, academia, government institutions working on protection issues.

Sustainability
Provision of 4 digits unified helpline number

1098 by Pakistan Telecommunication Authority. The lawyers who will be known in their own city and legal assistance will continue even after the completion of this project. The Service of Madadgaar 1098 will be responding the calls by the survivors of GBV. within and after project life.
