UPES honored in USA

UPES is acknowledged for preparing qualified global oil industry professionals. In its eleventh year of honoring the upstream energy industry's top innovators and innovations, World Oil Magazine announced the winners of its 2012 World Oil Awards. This year's honorees took home trophies in 16 categories during the gala event held on October 18th at the Houstonian Hotel, Houston, USA. The ceremony began with a key note speech from Mr. Charles D Davidson, Chairman & CEO of Noble Energy. Standing apart from the technology and program award winners, there were few individuals also, who were also recognized for their professional service in the industry. Nor that the University requires any bearing to exhibit its accomplishment on international front (which in any case is there in form of 26 MoUs across the globe); such honors put the organization on top amongst peers as 'Stand Out' organization. UPES has always believed in being innovative and unique and this prestigious award has affirmed this faith. Before this, University has been awarded at Suntech, Singapore under the category of "Asia's Best B-Schoool Awards". And now "Outstanding Petroleum University" title has presented UPES recognition in the World Oil Scenario.

Its good that our efforts have started receiving appreciations within a decade. We are the first ones to be identified as the Outstanding Petroleum University by a renowned international organization. Now we are committed to receive similar acknowledgments for our other domains too." .....Dr. Parag Diwan UPES is delighted to accept the honor that has contributed as a medium to publicly acknowledge it as a committed organization in preparing qualified global industry professionals. The years ahead, we wish more honors and felicitations serving as milestones to its growth.

Nuclear Energy and Sustainable Development

Sustainable Development The concept of sustainable development implies enhancing living conditions of people, conserving physical and biological resources and improving energy efficiency while avoiding pollution. The first priority of sustainable development in any country is economic and social development of people for which unequivocally, Energy is recognized as a key component. Energy constitutes a basic necessity for social and economic development. All areas where energy is needed get affected by availability of energy. An improved access to electricity translates into improvement towards health, education and economic empowerment. It is for this reason that India is aiming to provide access to electricity in all rural areas. Access to reliable and affordable energy is also a necessary condition for ensuring development of business. India has: a) large Industries b) a well developed service sector and c) an impressive growth rate. All of the above need energy to sustain and compete on a global scale. The high oil prices have a negative effect on India's economy. For sustained development of the country, it is absolutely necessary to promote access to electricity and broaden the energy sources. Climate change takes place due to effect on the environment, which poses a most serious challenge. Carbon emission poses a serious risk to every human being. For sustainable development of the country, we have to understand and shape our energy future. Due to our growth chart, India will soon join the club of the top Carbon emitter countries. By the year 2030, developing countries will account for 50% of world Carbon emissions. This places a great responsibility on us and as a consequence we have to consider all possible solutions. Now attention is being focused on Carbon free production of energy which are renewable energies. It has been surmised that fossil fuels will ultimately become excessively expensive such as oil within a few decades and coal within a century or so. Thus we must strive to effect a smooth transition from the presence dependence on fossil fuels to a condition where we depend upon resources that are essentially in exhaustible or are renewable. In order to meet the "baseload" demand at present, we have to take recourse to the existing reliable and economically competitive carbon free source which is Nuclear energy.

Energy Challenges
The energy challenges are global. The challenges are global in the sense that whatever happens in one part of the globe affects other parts. There are three important factors which challenge energy resources for sustained development increase in demand, security of energy and climate change. The increase in demand for electricity will be driven by the population increase, economic growth in developing and developed countries. Security of energy supply constitutes two components: affordable energy and reliable supply. The price of oil will go on increasing since the demand is also on a steep rise. The geo-strategic importance of energy supply cannot be underestimated.
- 19 -

Nuclear Energy
Nuclear energy is not only Carbon-clean, it is above all a competitive source of electricity. In fact, the nuclear power plants which are currently operating are among the cheapest source in the electricity market. An excellent example is provided by France. French electricity is among the cheapest in Europe. This is mainly due to 59 nuclear power plants, accounting for about 80% of electricity needs of France. France also has the largest per capita use of nuclear power in the world. Several countries have followed the path of obtaining their electric power needs through Nuclear power. The total number of reactors in the world are 339 at present

JANUARY 2013

What we need to do
We need to take the following steps to achieve our objectives. We should train many more engineers and technologists each year and thus use the vast human capital of the country in a meaningful way. In every field the surest way to attract the best students is to be innovative, daring and relevant. Some degree of renewal and of new vision is certainly needed. Keeping this aim in view, University of Petroleum & Energy Studies has started a new course on M. Tech in Nuclear Science and Technology. In order to give the benefit of international experts to our students, we plan to send our students to France for course work/dissertation.

which produce 376,341 megawatts of electricity (Source: Nuclear News, Amercian Nuclear Society, March 2008) and the number of reactors under construction on are 61. The above statistics clearly shows a "renaissance" of nuclear power. However, there are legitimate areas of concern to the public, a major area being that of safety. Although Chernobyl reminds us that we must never compromise with safety procedures, yet it is fair to say that the safety and envrionmental track-record of operating nuclear power plants is high. Implementation of safety regulations and continuous improvements are given the highest priorty in a reactor set-up. After signing the Nuclear deal with USA, nuclear fuel has become available to India and thus, a vast opportunity has opened up to increase the production of nuclear energy in the country. In order to reduce our dependency on imported fossil fuel and for safeguarding the environment, India has embarked on a program to widen our Nuclear Energy source for sustained development.

Conculsion
Indian economy is on a fast track and the future is bright enough to make the country a world class economic power. Indian business houses have already shown the potential to become real international players. Whereas this creates a lot of opportunities, it also entails new responsibilities. An important responsibility is to manage energy and environment in a sustainable way. India is large enough to influence the world dynamics, whether it is demand for fossil fuels or environmental issues. Finally, it must be remarked that sustainable development is not a matter of choice but a necessity. Nuclear energy is and will be part of the solution.
