Why English is important

IF YOU are currently learning English in a school, college or institute of further education, you join approximately one billion other people around the world who are engaged in the same pursuit. However, as you try to memorise proper grammar, and try to avoid the mistakes common to most students of English, you may wonder why you are learning the language in the first place. So, why is English important? After Mandarin, English is spoken by more people than any other language, and is the native language of more than 350 million people. More people speak English than those who speak the Arabic and French languages combined. Moreover, English is the international language of diplomacy, business, science, technology, banking, computing, medicine, aviation, UN & NATO armed forces, engineering, tourism, Hollywood films and arguably the best pop and rock music in the world. English has plenty of words to choose from. In fact, an English speaker is offered the biggest vocabulary of any language with a choice of 500,000 to 1,000,000 words (including technical and scientific terms). But dont panic, most English speakers do very well with a vocabulary of around 20,000 words. English can be fun too. For instance, the music of such stars as Elvis Presley, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Michael Jackson and Madonna has encouraged fans to speak the language of their idols, whilst others have enrolled in English classes to improve their understanding of the dialogue in films and TV shows. Or perhaps they have embraced English to enjoy the writing of Stephen King, George Orwell or J.K. Rowling. They may even have an interest in speaking English just to converse with travellers from other countries, who communicate by using the English global interlingua while travelling abroad. Finally, if you are studying English at school, college or university, remember that getting an A grade in English is almost worthless, in terms of communication, if you cannot speak the language. Spoken English is used in the best careers, the best universities, and is increasingly being used at job interviews. So like it or not, English is a very important language to learn how to speak. Being able to read and write in English is not enough! Vance Carson, Kajang

Why English Is Important. Summary: Discusses the importance of studying the English language. Describes how a strong grasp of the language leades to strong literacy skills and increased educational opportunities.

Imagine if people didn't study English. How would people be speaking and learning today? In order to sound educated and literate people need to thoroughly study English. It is also heavily needed in the business world as well as your own private world. English also teaches you to communicate and process things more accurately. If we didn't have a set English language communicating would be extremely difficult. The main reason to study English is to sound educated and literate. In order to advance in the professional world, you must have proper English and good speech.

For example, although President George W. Bush is an extremely smart and important person he at times lacks public speaking abilities. This has been a detriment to him and a big reason why people may not favor him. Where as, President Bill Clinton spoke very well and was very poplar with the people because he was able to properly connect with the public. This ties in the reason for why studying English thoroughly is important in the business world. In order to obtain a good career an advancement as well as respect from your peers you have to be literate and well educated. An additional reason for studying English is for communication. You are much more accepted in the world if you portray yourself better. People will think of you in a better way and you will have a better chance of being accepted. You will most likely also have more opportunities in life. In conclusion there are many reasons as to why studying English is important. One is being that you sound more educated and literate, two is to communicate properly with others, and three because it is important for career advancement and respect in the business world. Learning English never ends, there is the English dictionary that has so many words in it that most people have never even utilized or heard. Learning to properly use one new word each week is a great way to continually learn to utilize the English language. This section contains 339 words (approx. 2 pages at 300 words per page)
This is somewhat of an unclear question... The English language is important to people in many parts of the world because it is their native language. But I doubt that's what you mean. The English language is important in the world today because of the dominant position of the United States in an increasingly globalized world. Because it is important for many countries to do business with the United States, it is helpful for the people of those countries to learn English. Since this has been true for most of the period since World War II, many people around the world have learned the language. Since they have, it has become a way that, for example, a French person may speak to a Japanese. English has become the lingua franca of international business. I don't know if that's what you mean, though. Please let us know.

I think that the English language is so vitally important because it is spoken in so many parts of the world. Businesses, educational domains, academic domains, and even realms that deal with security all use English as a language of communication. In a practical sense, one could survive without English, but with the globalized nature of the world and commerce, knowledge of English is quite essential. In terms of the appreciation of language and literature, knowledge of English is extremely important in understanding some of the best writings offered. This is not to say that other languages do not possess the same amount of introspection and talent. Far from it. Yet, the knowledge of English could help to open many professional and literary doors.

English is an important language, because it is the linga franca of the world. Since there are so many languages of the world and on account of this, there can be communication problems, it is important to have a language that most people know. This happens to be English. For example, children in many countries of the world learn English. So, it is very possible to be in any major city in the world and probably get by with English. This is an amazing point! Now things will change drastically outside of cities. Finally, English may not be the linga franca in the future, but for now it is. For this reason, it is important to learn English.

The previous posts all correctly point out that English is the lingua franca today, but I don't see where they have addressed how the history of the English language has lead it to become the lingua franca. I'll try my hand at this, but I don't have my usual resources on hand, so I'll have to work from memory. (I recommend the book The Story of

English, based on the TV series in the link below. For a more exhaustive linguistic approach, see for example, the outer history section of the textbook by C.M. Millward.) English was a relatively unimportant language (or, more precisely, a set of dialects) around 450 AD, when a set of Germanic tribes (mostly the Angles, Saxons, and Jutes) moved from their homelands in what is now northern Germany and Denmark to what is now England. Old English was widely spoken on the island in the centuries that followed, lost status when the French-speaking Normans conquered England, and slowly regained status in the late Middle English period. At this point, still, English was just one of many languages. It was generally less respected than Latin among scientists and theologians, for example. It was not until the period of Early Modern English, a period also known as the Age of Discovery (c. 1500-1800 AD) that English really began to gain status. England began to establish colonies around the world and exported its language and governing systems so that it could import what it wanted, e.g. spices and rare woods and, for a while, slaves. The Early Modern English period witnessed the first time that English was spoken around the world, but still it was not nearly as widely distributed as it is today. Today English is widely taught around the world as a second language. (The number of native speakers of English is not very large at all, compared to Spanish or Chinese, it's worth noting.) The emergence of the United States as a global power after WWII (incl. the strong economy and the enduring military presence of American soldiers in many countries around the world) took the globalization of English one step further. Still, British English is still widely taught as the prestige form in classrooms around the world. There's a lot more to say, of course. If you ask for more (e.g. by 'message'), I'll gladly do what I can to help.

I want to also add the position of London as an operational, cultural, financial, and defensive post ever since its creation as a city. Once the newly-called English were in operation, London became a center of commerce. Through London, as a port in front of the River Thames, loads of diverse cultural groups came in and out to make business. The location was prime for trade and exchange, and (as a linguist I can almost ascertain)that the process created its own unique lexicon. Furthermore, as England expanded as an empire, it brought with it the lexicon of commerce, as well as the cultural gains that London (itself an entire personage far removed from England as a whole) brought with it. It is not surprising, then, that English became such a powerful language due to the potential of connection that England's capital brought with it, and the influence it exercised in the nearby countries.

Hello. Well I think the most important and useful thing is that English is one of the most spoken languages in the world. The first one is Mandarin. Some say English is the second one and others say it's Hindi. Nevertheless, Mandarin and Hindi are concentrated in their respective countries, and English is more extended. Apart from this, English is one of the simpliest language I've ever studied. For instance, you can see that German has multiple verbal conjugation, while English has just one (two with the third person of singular). I hope I have helped you.

Welcome!!! I have examples of the benefits of English for you: All airline pilots and air traffic controllers have to speak English. They have to learn a precise and specific vocabulary. If pilots and controllers would speak different languages, international air travel would be very dangerous, if not impossible. In many countries, the citizens have different tribal languages. Even though English is not a native language, the governments select Engilsh as an adopted national language. There are several reasons for this. 1) no one tribe will have a political advantage over the others; 2) a common language will enable people of different tribes to communicate with each other without them having to learn all the other tribal languages; 3) the government documents and laws written in English will be less subject to interpretation than if they had to be written separately in every tribal language; 4) an English-speaking population will attract International trade and foreign tourists; 5) the young people who speak English will be able to travel, study and work abroad more easily and 6) it will be easier for them to adopt new technologies, as well as to get the technologies that they develop exported around the world. Many groups of people want to influence world politics. They want to ask for help, explain their situation, or argue their position. If they use a language that is not understood by people around the world, they will not have a possibility of getting what they want.

English is important for many reasons. For one, you can't get a great job if you can't speak it well, or write it. It teaches you great things even about history (poets, etc.). There are definately a lot of reasons why it is so important, English has been for hundreds of years and will always be around. You use English in everything that you do eacha dn every day would be your number one. Think to yourself...why would a school pick that subject? Go through all of the positives of it, we can't tell you much because it would give it away and we just did your paper for you.

Source(s): Read this:

Every subject you do requires English for writing assignments and tests. It may not seem that way until you get closer to a university level course because knowing the content for a test isnt the only thing you need, you have to be able to clearly and distinctively express this for example a question that requires a paragraph answer. English is meant to teach this sort of thing though it doesnt always successfully get it across.

THE SINGER I could say a lot - but basically - clear, straightforward communication is essential for business, school, writing, and building relationships with people. As a culture of people, we have many subcultures 'and' slang to move us along in our world. We have so many hats to wear in the world that much of it is and has been crossing over for years. As a teacher, a former human resource manager, I have found that communication can make or break a person. You must be able to speak the language of the land AND know the conventions of that language. Your performance in the workplace, in school, in your career, are all important because of your ability to communicate effectively with your peers and others. o o

Horton Because it's how we communicate with each other and it's how you express yourself. It's one way in which you expose yourself to the world. It's one way in which you make an impression of yourself on the people you encounter.
If you are articulate (in written and spoken language) you are perceived to be intelligent, educated, and capable in your endeavors. These perceptions lead to your ability to influence others, gain respect and gain some sort of status that is elevated above the inarticulate.

Why English is Important: The Lingua Franca of the Modern Era

Although a variety of languages are spoken all over the world, English is an important language to know. English is the language most international business is conducted in, it is used in more areas of the globe than any other and the only language spoken by more people is Mandarin (one of the languages in China). In many countries, the citizens have different tribal languages. Even though English is not a native language, the governments select English as an adopted national language. The government documents and laws written in English will be less subject to interpretation than if they had to be written separately in every tribal language. All school-related and workplace connections require a solid understanding of the English language. If you are studying English at school, college or university, remember that getting an 'A' grade in English is almost worthless, in terms of communication, if you cannot speak the language. Spoken English is used in the best careers, the best universities, and is increasingly being used at job interviews. The reason most multinational companies ask their employees to speak English is because English is the language most used for international trade at the moment. It isn't the most spoken language in the world but it has the largest number of secondary speakers. For them it will be easier to adopt new technologies, as well as to get the technologies that they develop exported around the world. Moreover, English is the international language of diplomacy, business, science, technology, banking, computing, medicine, aviation, NATO armed forces, engineering, tourism, Hollywood films and arguably the best pop and rock music in the world. I love English The English language is a very important language that everyone should master to prosper in life. It is also an International language that is commonly used. I believe that every individual should have keen interest to study English as it can help them to achieve a lot of things in their lives. As a student, I took great interest to master this language. I learnt a lot and now I can see great improvements in me. I can interact better now with all my friends and also my teachers. Most of them told me that I can speak fluently now. The English language is also essential in order for me to obtain a stable and good job in the future. By having great knowledge in English, I believe that I would be able to sustain well in a company. I am proud of myself because knowing that I am not an American citizen, I could speak English very well because from the beginning, I was very determined and I also had great desire to study. My personal advice to all out there, please master this language in order to prosper to greatest heights, you will not regret it. Acquire and perceive English, only then life will be wonderful, beautiful, meaningful, joyful and colorful. Zain Academy Nagpur India by: Anonymous Higher education is so important for those who want to survive in this modern era world. English is spoken by more people than any other language, and is the native language of more than 350 million people. Moreover, English is the international language of diplomacy, business, science, technology, banking, computing, and medicine field. It?s fun to learn English. Many of us had enrolled in English classes to improve their grammar and so on. This because we need to use correct spelling, grammar, and punctuation in our daily life. Thanks for the advice. Yes! I think English is vital for us as citizens in Malaysia. Besides being lingua franca of interntional business, educational, politics and also media, English actually is everything for us to get a job if we speak effectively and efficiently in English. But nowadays this seems sad coz I see most of the students in Malaysia cannot speak nor write English well although they had been exposed to English for about 11 years. So I wish that they will study why English is important nowadays.

Why English is Important in One Life? (My opinion)

29, 2008 nilati

Life long learning is the concept that it is never too soon or too late for learning. Lifelong learning is attitudinished that one should be open to the new ideas, decisions, skills or behaviours.

English is neccessity of life and the same as lifelong learning when you want to live in the real world; English is very important and neccessity in your life.

For example, when I was young I could not speak any language and then after I grew up my parents, my teachers; they tried to teach Thai language to me because they knew if I cannot understand Thai language it would be very difficult to live

with another people when I grew up where I studied my teacher taught English to our students because he knew English is very important in the world, but I did not know why at that time I did not study hard. Sometime, English was boring; this is the reason why I did not have interest to study it, perhaps I think, I am lazy and it is not good for me. (HAHA)

English is important key to success. If you want to do anything in the world such as, to study, to do your business, to make a new friends, to go aboard etc. Especially when you go aboard to study another course. It is teach in English and then when you graduate and want to get a good job, it is very important for you to do anything in your business. You can use it to make new friends from all over the countrys in the world for your business. It has an adventure over than somebody cannot use English. Your business has a good chance for your success.

The real world has a lot of business competitors if you cannot use English maybe you get someone who want to do business with you and may decieve you and then your business may fail or bankrupt.

Whatever English enlightens us about how to succeed in the real world eventually I want to study English, but according to my chance when I live in India. My disere is simutnious about studying English and to write research proposal an apply to study in some course at the university because i will hope it would be good for me to improve my English and I will finish maybe it has been good.

When I have finished. I will get a good job and I can communicate or contact with foriegners who give a good chance and good work for me. Though I will achieve good things or bad experiences but I think, English is meaningful and worthwhile to study. I will want to study all the time, it cannot stop to learn probably if i will study for a long time, it will help me to succeed in anything. I am hopeful it can improve my life although it is very difficult and very complicated for me, but I will want to try and study. It has worthiness or worthless it depends on you. If you think and do in the right way it is good for you and anybody, but on the other hand it is good for you only and then it can destroy someone.
