CAPTAIN SHOUTS FORE!
Running down the rst fairway to catch up to my fourball because I am late, what a way to start the day at Wanderers. So my humble apologies to Captain of Wanderers, Russell Sourgen and Pye and Greg Breedenkamp, and my thanks to the nesmaster for not picking me out for it. That being said Wanderers was in superb condition and our thanks go out to your grounds staff for a fantastic day, where the weather once again played its part in staying away. Thank you to Graham Bishop and your star ters, Tony Shaw and Derek Cuthbert. I think you did a great job in getting both tees off on time considering that one of your starters failed to pitch. Thanks to Bev and Roz for all your help in getting us going. Guys if there are any of your wives or girlfriends who can help out at the start of the game please contact me or Bev to offer assistance, the work load at the start of the game could be a lot easier for our ladies if there were three of them at the table. I had the pleasure of playing with Russell Sourgen the captain of Wanderers, Pye Breedenkamp and Greg Breedenkamp who made the trip out from Mozambique to join us. Unfortunately I played like an absolute palooka, and Greg got the matchbox which resulted in us getting the coveted altar bunnies prize. Good news is that any prize is better than no prize. Thanks for a great day out guys. Wow, what a busy prize giving we had. Firstly thanks to Rev. Chunky Young for joining us and giving us a little insight into Darrens chosen charity for this year. Lets give Darren as much support as possible guys.It was also my pleasure to induct Graham Swallow, Roger Ketley, Chris Ledden and Chris Quinn, welcome to Nomads chaps, I hope that you enjoy your time as a Nomad and make lots of new friends. I also had the pleasure of awarding a 300 game badge to Richard Moore, what a great achievement. As well as a number of ties, rstly a 5 year tie for Derek Hughes, 10 year ties for Mike Walters and Ralph White. Then a 15 year tie for Greg Breedenkamp and 20 year ties for Gavin Ditcheld and Albert dos Santos. Then we had two big ones, 40 year ties for Pye Breedenkamp and John Welsh, and nally half a century, it was a great honour for me to present Pat McGurk with his 50 year tie, both because of what a great achievement it is and for my personal association with him in the print world. Thank you Pat for making the effort to join us at prize giving and then driving home in the dark, at the ripe old age of 93 gentleman, wow. Congratulations to all of you, may you enjoy many more years with this wonderful club of ours. dont put us in the embarrassing situation of having to pick you out for it. While Im ranting about rules and regulations, I was picked out by our National Chairman for our dress code, in particular about secret socks. For all those guys who chose to wear shorts please make sure that you are wearing Nomads socks and not secret socks, as well as the rest of our playing uniform. Gentleman please be aware that if you fail to arrive for your tee off time or if for any reason you are unable to complete your round it is your obligation to contact the captain and explain your reasons for this occurrence, as well as to contact each individual in you fourball to apologise for your actions. The Telkom PGA starts on Thursday 14th of March, which is the weekend of the start of Nationals so Stewart is going to need all the help he can get. If you can help out even if it is just for one or two days give Stewart a call and he will slot you in, its a lot of fun. Good luck to all of you that have entered Nationals, Im sure it will be another great week of friendship. Cheers

We are still experiencing problems with Spero guys not entering scores. By you not entering your score you are cheating, so please guys enter your scores and

VICE CAPTAIN LIPS OUT

It was my pleasure to host Reverend Chunky Young at Wanderers. St Columbus Presbyterian Church does an immense amount of charitable work and I thank them for introducing me to our charity for the year, Guild Cottage. For those Nomads that werent at the game, it is a home for abused girls. We will be doing various projects there and I will be asking for some help throughout the year. Please assist if you can. As of our next game, if you can, please bring any non-perishable food items (Pastas,Tin Food, Long Life Milk, Cereal etc) to the game. I will have a box at the registration table that you can put the goods into. Every bit counts and it is going to an extremely needy organization, who is really struggling to make ends meet. Race day is confirmed for Sunday, 4th August. Please diarize this event as we need all the support we can get. Last year, there were only around 40 Gauteng Nomads there, which I think is a pretty poor effort. Guys lets get some Gees going and make sure we fill up the room this year. You are not required to take a whole table and can buy a single ticket if you want. The Lotto draw comes up for renewal in May, those guys in the current draw will get rst option to renew their numbers and anyone wanting to buy a ticket please let Andrew Mostert know. Good luck to all the boys who are playing Nationals, lets bring back the cup!! See you at Reading. Cheers, Darren.

BLAKES BLAH! BLAH!

MONTHLY GAME As always The Wanderers was in absolutely magnificent condition. The entire course was like a park with lush fairways and greens like velvet carpets. There were a number of interesting pin positions but these didnt really effect the better golfers. How nice it was that we had a super field of 133 players to enjoy the afternoon and to try to do justice to the course. We h a d a ve r y b u s y aw a rd s prizegiving. It was great to have our 1969 Captain, Pat McGurk, there to receive his 50-year tie. This is a magnificent achievement. Pat addressed the audience with his usual aplomb and we all wish him a ver y happy forthcoming 93rd birthday, on the 7th Together with Gregs 19 points they managed a total of 100 points to become a somewhat illustrious team of Altar Bunnies. Thanks to Paul Adams and Old Mutual for the 8th year of the Old Mutual Pairs Our Vice-Captain, Darren Holm, has chosen Guild Cottage as his 2013 charity beneciary and he intends to do a lot of alterations and renovations to their premises, right next to the Milpark Hospital. For those of you who are in the building industry and can help or contribute any building materials please give Darren a call. Chris Ledden, one of the Wanderers inductees, tied for the Matchbox (he also qualies for Gold Cup) but better than that he became a rst in Gauteng Nomads (and perhaps countrywide) to be inducted as a Nomads Dad. John Warwick played his Gary Player Knockout on his own (with his nonparticipating partners handicap) and was beaten by just one point, see how interesting and tight this competition can be. I would like to give a gentle reminder to those of you who dont read the free golf rules booklets, that are given out at most golf clubs! When there is placing, at any golf club, you must mark, lift, clean and then place the ball NOT just move the ball around by hand or with your golf club. I was given permission to clean out a number of my old Nomad les and I was surprised to see that some of them date back to 1984 (the year I was the Membership Ofcer for Alec Saunders). On 20/09/1984 there were 245 members in the Transvaal Nomads Club, just 34 of them are still members today and 100 have passed away since that date. It is great that we have built up our prospective members list to 16, after inducting 11 new members in 2012 and 5 already this year but we need some young members. Our average age has crept up to 60.6 years of age, I wonder what it was in 1984, and 38.71% are eligible for Senior Tees. The Mystery Tour will be on Friday the 3rd May 2103. This is always a great days fun so make sure you contact Andrew Mossie Mostert as soon as the Entry Forms come out. Quite a few of you are getting lax with putting in your scores, from a Nomads game, within 72 hors of playing the game. Remember the onus is on you whether you have swiped your card at the game, or not.

competition. This year there were three pairs tied on 72 points and they all go through to the Regional Finals. Good luck, perhaps one of you will eventually win through to the overseas final. Thanks to Sid Rickhoff for an amusing fines session but you forgot to have a group fine, which could have been a killing on even just R2.00 with the Captain making just 22 points! April. John Pye Bredenkamp and John Welsh received their 40-year ties, Gavin Ditchfield and Albert dos Santos their 20-year ties, Greg Bredenkamp his 15year tie, Ralph White and Mike Walters their 10-year ties and a 5-year tie went to Derek Hughes. There was just one badge award on the evening with Richard Moore (our 1988 Captain) collecting his 300 game badge. Congratulations to all of you. Welcome to Roger Ketley, Chris Ledden, Chris Quinn and Graham Swallow who were inducted on the evening and we wish you many years of exciting Nomads participation. Remember that there are many more facets to Nomads than playing a monthly game on a regular basis. You have a 13th

CONGRATULATIONS TO Riki & Marlize Corthouts on the arrival of a bonny son. GET WELL/CASUALTIES We have a number of sick, lame and lazy at the moment. We all hope that Bill Bailey, Joe de Klerk, Vic Hurford, Alec Lewis-Williams, Roy Mentis (and any others unbeknown to me) will soon be seeing our playing elds again. JUST ME Welcome to Joss Hamilton (Honorary Life Member) who is in the process of transferring from Border Nomads. Joss is a Founder of the Eastern Cape and the Border Clubs, has played in excess of 30 National Tournaments, close to 400 Nomads games and has a wonderful Nomads playing record which we hope the Border club will find and forward to us! It was good seeing you at The Wanderers prizegiving Joss. Welcome also to Dhiren Garach a transferee from Western Province, a much newer Nomad at just 5 years. Good luck to those of you who will be playing at Easterns Ebotse National Tournament. I believe that we now have a team of 41 players and that the organisers are looking for more players to ll the eld, this could be a rst at a National Tournament! Please diarise that this years Race Day will be held on Sunday the 4th August

obligatory game to play at the annual Andrew Mentis Charity Golf Day, you can offer some help at Golforama (even if it is just for one day of a four day tournament), go to Race Day at Turffontein, join in the fun of at least one away/mystery tour. etc. etc. Well played Stewart Vernon, with your 39 points, you had quite an evening with your first Division win, the Best Playing Fourball, Runner Up in the Drawn Fourball and you qualified for the Regional Final of the Old Mutual Pairs. Greg Bredenkamp came all the way from Mozambique to receive his 15-year tie and in the process he managed to win his first ever Matchbox. He played with our Captain (22 points and he won his bet), one of the two 40-year tie recipients (his Dad) and The Wanderers Captain (Nomad Russell Sourgeon). and will be reverting to a day meeting.

THE BACK PEW A ministers wife was expecting a baby, so he stood before the congregation and asked for a raise. After much discussion, they passed a rule that whenever the ministers family expanded; so would his pay cheque. After 6 children, this started to get expensive and the congregation decided to hold another meeting to discuss the ministers expanding salary. A great deal of yelling and bickering ensued, as to how much the ministers additional family were costing the church and how much more it could potentially cost. After listening to them for about an hour, the minister rose from his chair and spoke, Children are a gift from God and we will take as many gifts as He gives us. Silence fell over the congregation. In the back pew, a little old lady struggled to stand and finally said in her frail voice, Rain is also a gift from God but when we get too much of it, we wear rubbers. The entire congregation said, Amen. Youve got to love those Senior Citizens!
