LESSON 1 Japan Asias Industrial Giant

LEARNING ACTIVITY 1 Discuss at least two (2) of the characteristics of the Japanese development in terms or resources, tradition letting, role of government, inflation setting and trade that contributed to their level as Asias Industrial Giant. Japan over the long-ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) holds historical significance, not only for political scientists but also for the people of Japan, and possibly for the countrys Asian neighbors and the United States as well. One of the characteristics of Japanese development that contributed to their status as Asias Industrial Giant is the employee-oriented management. Companies in Japan develop their employees and take good care of them including their families so that the employees build a corporate loyalty. Another is that they developed agriculture and fishing and built p a manufacturing and processing industries which convert raw materials from abroad. In this strategy there is lesser cost of production which in the helped the economy of Japan to prosper.

invested a comparable amount in Southeast Asia. Foreign trade has been the engine of Taiwan's rapid growth during the past 40 years. Taiwan's economy remains export-oriented, thus it depends on an open world trade regime and remains vulnerable to downturns in the world economy. The total value of trade increased over fivefold in the 1960s, nearly tenfold in the 1970s, and doubled again in the 1980s. Taiwan is the world's largest supplier of contract computer chip manufacturing (foundry services) and is a leading LCD panel manufacturer, DRAM computer memory, networking equipment, and consumer electronics designer and manufacturer. Textiles are another major industrial export sector, though of declining importance as Taiwan due to labor shortages, increasing overhead costs, land prices, and environmental protection. Agriculture has served as a strong foundation for Taiwan's economic miracle. ANSWER (query 1) The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) can boast of being the most successful political party operating in a democracy since the midtwentieth century. The party held power nearly continuously from its formation in 1955, a scant three years after the end of the U.S. occupation. In the House of Representatives (the lower but substantially more powerful house in Japans bicameral system), the LDP compiled an amazing record: the party did not lose a single election in more than a half century, until August 30, 2009, when the Democracy Party of Japan won a stunning upset victory. Other factors played a role as well. Japans fiscal centralization and unitary state encouraged clientelistic relationships, which the LDP took full advantage of in order to mobilize support. Taiwan now faces many of the same economic issues as other developed economies. With the Module III page 4

prospect of continued relocation of laborintensive industries to economies with cheaper work forces, such as in China and Vietnam, Taiwan's future development will have to rely on further transformation to a high technology and service-oriented economy. Taiwan's dependence on the United States should continue to decrease as its exports to Southeast Asia and China grow and its efforts to develop European markets produce results. Foreign trade has been the engine of Taiwan's rapid growth during the past 40 years. Taiwan's economy remains export-oriented, thus it depends on an open world trade regime and remains vulnerable to downturns in the world economy. ANSWER (query 2) There are lots of policies of Japan, Korea and Taiwan in managing their economy. Some of these policies are employee-oriented policy among companies, development within the resources of the country itself, the importance of education of citizens, housing developments and the living environment and many others. ANSWER (query 3) Most people do not exclusively identify themselves as adherents of a single religion; rather, they incorporate elements of various religions in a syncretic fashion known as Shinbutsu shg. Shinbutsu Shg officially ended with the Shinto and Buddhism Separation Order of 1886, but continues in practice. Shinto and Buddhism are therefore best understood not as two completely separate and competing faiths, but rather as a single, rather complex religious system. Christianity also has a cultural influence on mainstream culture. There is a freedom of religion among these countries. The role of religion in the development of these countries play a great part for it helped them to give the idea of loving and giving importance to their employees. Module III page 5
